An Elequent Response to War & All Its Horrors
WOMEN ON WAR, edited with an introduction by Daniela Gioseffi--American Book Award winning poet and non-violent peace activist for many years--is "an eloquent response to global violence that sweeps through time and across national boundaries," said Doris Jean Austin, Reviewer in THE NEW YORK TIMES, of the first edition. Austin added. "This is a book one hopes will be translated into all languages of humankind." This all new edition contains such illustrious contributors as Jane Addams, Anna Akhmatova, Daisy al-Amir, Fadwa Tuqan, Gwendolyn Brooks, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Gace Paley, Claribel Alegria, Isaabel Allende, Maya Angelou, Simone de Beauvoir, Helen Caldicott, Rosalie Bertell, Carolyn Forche, Emma Goldman, Nadine Gordimer, Kimiko Hahn, Molly Peacock, Rochelle Ratner, Pwu Jean Lee, Tsai Wen Ji, Ch'iu Chin, Robin Morgan, Gabriela Mistral, Linda Hogan, Adrienne Rich, Denise Levertov, Vandana Shiva, Arundhati Roy, Wislawa Symborska, Luisa Valenzuela, Christa Wolf, Muriel Rukeyser, June Jordan and 100 others including Daniela Gioseffi herself who writes an insiteful and politically astute overview, as well as contributing a moving poem and an apt story. There is an extensive bibliography for further reading on this vital subject, as well, and extensive headnotes on all the authors. An immensely rich collection for a nominal price! And from a not-for-profit press, The Feminist Press with N.G.O. status at the United Nations--a press with the expressed mission of getting women's voices from all cultures out into the wide world in order to improve the status of women in all walks of life and endeavors.

Brilliant, Rational, Timely, Vital and Necessary
This new edition of Daniels Gioseffi's unique and splendid collection is urgently needed now. Framed by Gioseffi's brilliant overview of the world's crisis, these vivid and visionary writings--poetry, history, politics and prose--inspire and galvanize. This book offers the great gift of hope and understanding on every page.

ORIGINAL, POWERFUL, INSPIRING AND ACCESSIBLE POETRY
This is an inspiring and original book of poetry. I was moved by its vision and excited by its imagery. Gioseffi writes beautifully of the natural world, but is full of human concern. She is a poet for all seasons. Word Wounds and Water Flowers resonates with vitality concerning issues of our time, yet it is universal in its appeal and acessible, too. A true poet of passion and logic. Nona Balakian, of The New York Times was correct to say that "nothing is ever pretentious or done for effect. Daniela Gioseffi is one of the best new poets around and I am ashamed that I was unaware of her work until now. She has achieved what the surrealists hoped for poetry." This new book has elements of surrealism but reaches deeper than Gioseffi's first book. Galway Kinnell, Pulitzer and National Book Award winning poet, called it "visionary and powerful with tremendous vitality," and it is. I recommend it. The blurbs on its back cover are true.

Very moving and well written poetry. Embraces the spirit..
Word Wounds & Water Flowers is an uplifting and poignant, very inspiring work of poetic art. So human and eloquent. Daniela Gioseffi is, just as Nona Balakian, former staff reviewer at the New York Times, said: "among the best poets of our time." These poems are "powerful and visionary" just as Galway Kinnell wrote on the back cover, and fully sensitive to the issues of our age. Lyrical and meaningful.

Marvelous Book of Poetry. Should be back in print.
What John Logan said about this poet in the introduction to the book was excellently perception. This is a poet who creates bonds with the reader, a poet of rich imagination and startling imagery. This poems are as true today as when they were written in the1970's and this poet has gone on to produce more good books and works judging from the reviews she's received from fine poets and critics from every school and literary persuasion. Buy a used copy of you can get one. They are valuable collector's items, indeed.

MOVING, AMUSING,TRUE TO LIFE, YET MAGICAL AND ORIGINAL
Though some of these stories employ realms of magical realism, they are basically true to life, and they are written from numerous persona. Daniela Gioseffi brings many varied characters to life and manages to make us empathize with their feelings. Her characters are very human and even when she satirizes them, they never lose their dignity. She writes with a delicate balance of heart and head, and seems to belong to none of the trendy movements out there. She is an original. Daniela Gioseffi is aware of life in these times in America, and her characters are both naturalistically and poetically drawn from real life situations. The novella, The Psychic Touch, contained within IN BED WITH THE EXOTIC ENEMY, is one of the most erotic and mysterious love stories I've ever read--it's a non-stop read, and yet it resonates with poetic justice long after you put it down. I read this whole collection nearly non-stop and loved every story in it. Larry McMurtry, National Book Award and Pultizer Prize winning novelist, in The Washington Post, called Gioseffi's writing "full of energy, humor and good spirits....the pace never slackens" and he's correct. It doesn't.

Will Work for Peace is a triumph of poetic Davids.
As one of the poets featured in Will Work for Peace, one might expect me to be a bit biased, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Most poets work in a virtual vacuum, only tenuously connected to each other by the occasional workshop or shared membership in a 'poetry society'. When Brett Axel first approached me for a submission to an anthology he was considering, the names Marge Piercy, Lyn Lifshin, Moshe Bennaroch and so many others were abstractions to me as a fledgling poet. I knew these tremendous writers were 'out there' somewhere, beating down doors with their words and keeping a struggling artform alive. But to think that someday I would ever share a credit with these dynamic modern poets would be a pipe dream at best. It is through the sincere efforts of Brett Axel that many newer voices like mine have an extraordinary opportunity to appear with Pulitzer Prize winners and other poetic heavyweights. By way of an honest review, however, I will say this- not everything in this book will be to your particular liking. I myself came across some works that did not move me in the way the author may have intended. Some imagery can be raw and visceral, using shock value in place of craft at times. But to ignore those voices would be an even more shocking turn of events, so praise be to the editor for not sacrificing his vision to a senseless conformity. As Pete Seeger so aptly put it in his quote, trying to read all these poems at one time would be like trying 'to swallow Manhattan whole'. I say to you- buy this book, read this book, but understand that it's what you do after reading this book that will ultimately define who you could be. Poetry is alive and well, and lives in the blunt pages of Will Work for Peace.

You have to read this book!
Brett Axel visited my Church and I bought a copy of Will Work For Peace from him, not for poetry, but because I care about working for peace. I started reading through it thinking It'd just go on my shelf and that'd be the end of it, but the book grabbed me and kept me rivited. If I had known that poetry was this alive I'd have been into poetry. I've been reading some of the poems to my friends who also didn't think poetry was important and they are saying the same thing. Fantastic! There's no way to get through this book without having your old mindsets challenged. It's funny, powerful, sad, and uplifting. A book that deserves to be read by everyone. A book that really can make the world a better place!

Thumbs Up
Just amazing start to finish! I like the disregard for fame used in putting the book together. That great poems got in even if they were writtenby nobodys. Look at Roger Bonair-Agard's poem on page 74. Shortly after Will Work For Peace came out he won Slam Nationals, becoming Slam Champion of 1999, which will be getting him lots of offers. But Zeropanik Press didn't need to be told he was good by an award. They could tell by his writing! Good for them and good for all of us because Will Work For Peace is a literary milestone. It's a new standard for all future anthology editors to try to live up to. Thumbs up to Brett Axel and Thumbs up to Zeropanik Press for their guts and integrty.

An Original Poet of Humane Vision
Daniela Gioseffi is one of the finest and most original poets of our time. It's a pity she isn't even better known than she is. She deserves to be listed among the best, not only for her subtle use of language, original imagery and melodic cadence, but for her humane stance on important issues. Here is a poet who knows something about the real world and how it works in such poems as "Divorce or Corrasable Bond" where she writes: "The last ghosts of Indians are asking for food in the amber waves of dying grain," or in "The Plan"where she writes "all seed through 'corporate engineering' was lost to greed." she catches the real pulse of our time and there are many such poems which address the issues of being alive on this planet, here and now, with graceful awareness of reality.

VITAL POETRY
A surrealist imagination with a concern for real issues. There Is courage in these poems, real caring about the human condition. Much poetry is vapid and self-involved. Gioseffi is informed by genuine urgency for wordly concerns and lyric eloquence-- a rare combination of heart, head and craft.

Exciting Accessible Poetry say the Pro Critics
What critics have said about the author of GOING ON: POEMS "One of the finest poets around.... Eggs in the Lake overflows with poetic vision, but nothing is ever pretentious or done for effect." Nona Balakian, Former staff reviewer: The New York Times, author Critical Encounters

"visionary and powerful. With tremendous vitality.... Gioseffi is a gifted , graceful and moving writer." Galway Kinnell, National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize Poet, New York University

" In Word Wounds she wounds and seduces to litanize and heal.... The work's been described as 'mythopoeic, visionary, healing original and irrisistible.'"William Allen, Chelsea

Gioseffi celebrates and laments her life and heritage with a voice, breath, and scope that might be likened to Allen Ginsberg. American Book Review

"Gioseffi is one of the school of strong epic poets. Few women take on the page like a Ginsberg, a Baraka or a Whitman... In Word Wounds and Water Flowers, sometimes her voice is full volume, full tilt, strapping, vigorous, then it reels with tenderness...." Grace Cavalieri, Poet Lore, Host Producer of N.P.R.'s The Poet & The Poem

"A vital international author, dedicated to planetary survival." Cecilia Ceriani, El Pais

"Anyone who thinks that a poet cannot write about important, serious contemporary subjects without the burden of rhetoric should take a lesson from Daniela Gioseffi." Philip Appleman, Confrontation.
