Great Book
Given the history of this book, it is almost a classic. No course on Welfare policy could not refer to it.

On of the best introductions to social work policy ever.
This is an excellent book. I've used it in undergraduate (and graduate) courses here at the University of Chicago and have been VERY pleased with the result. Colleagues at Berkeley (where Professors Terrell and Gilbert teach) use it as well. It is quite possibly the most complete text on the subject I've ever used

A great insight on sales force management
While other books try to teach the selling process, this piece of art helps you understand all the issues underlying in a sales force area, it's administation, the relationship with pre and post sales areas and the way to succeed in a managing position. One of the best books I've read on this subject.

A must-have book for undergraduate sudents and teachers.
I teach in one of the finest schools of Mexico, MBA Marketing and Field Force management topics, and was really tired of looking for comprehensive, complete and reasonable readings that covers the most important areas of managing a Sales Force. Churchil is a must-have text for both, college and high level (superior / undergraduate) students, since it really takes you through every important aspect of the topic.

Important intellectual achievement
This is a great book. The analysis is deep, multidimensional and impartial, there are important observations but no connotations. There are important assertions and "loose ends" at the same time, the author does not pretend to make final conclusions, the book makes you think. If you read the book with due attention and do not skip pages your level of understanding of many social phenomena will change.

ARQ: A Serious Learner's Bible
ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS has been a phenomenal influence in my life. From start to finish, it helped me to rid myself of one of my foremost enemies: sloppy thought.

The book is superbly organized, well written, and extremely easy to follow. Additionally, the fifth edition's graphics add an extra dose of spice to enhance the book's readability.

I have found that after reading ARQ, I have been able to apply its critical thinking tips to all of my college classes, from history to English and from econ. to law. Furthermore, by enhancing my critical thinking skills, I have been more effective as a consumer and a citizen as well. Most importantly, however, ARQ inspired me to question the evidence for many of my previously-held beliefs en route to becoming a lifelong learner.

I have recommended this book to many friends, classmates, and even former teachers. I would encourage any person who is interested in developing her or his mind to read ARQ. Not only doe! s it provide readers with the skills necessary to be a critical thinker, but it also imbues them with the spirit of intellectual curiosity that only true learners possess.

A must for anyone who wants to be a smarter thinker!
This book has been a tremendously positive influence on my life as well as on the lives of those to whom I have recommended it! Before studying "Asking the Right Questions," I was well educated, but nevertheless my thinking was often muddled and illogical. As a graduate student, this book helped me to better define my own ideas as well as understand the ideas of others. I learned how to engage in truly meaningful discourse with others about ideas and principles because I could apply a more rational approach. Differences of opinion became engaging rather than destructive or unproductive. This book and its philosophy gives me hope in the idea of the "democracy of ideas."

As a college professor, I use this book in all of my classes and require students to purchase it. We work on one skill a week as we learn the course content. Students regularly report that having a class focused around critical thinking is a unique and highly valuable experience. While I find it sad and disturbing that few college students are exposed to such skills regularly, I find it encouraging the ARQ provides an effective forum to help me teach these skills. The book is engaging, with many current examples and vivid illustrations. The reading level is appropriate for anyone in high school or higher. And because the content and skills are ones that are pertinent to any individual or college major or profession, it can be integrated into virtually any course. I especially think it would be an excellent foundation for the first-year seminars that are so popular on college campuses.

While I use this book in a classroom setting, it is one that an individual can easily benefit from. I recommended it to my mom, who said, "This book taught me more about evaluating ideas on tv, from politicians, and from other books than anything else I've ever done or read!" She found the examples and exercises quite engaging and helpful.

The ideas and philosophy of "Asking the Right Questions" have the potential to profoundly change an individual by making them a better, smarter thinker! I think it should be required reading for all of us.

Don't be a sponge!
After reading ARQ and making its content an active part of my life, I was plucked from the world of passive sponges and dropped into the world of eager learners "panning for gold." I have never looked back.

This book has had a tremendous impact on my learning experiences, both in and out of the classroom. I have learned not to simply accept the facts presented to me, but to question them in a systematic and logical fashion. Additionally, I now see the immense value of questioning both the convictions I agree with most intensely and those I disagree with most intensely. This critical thinking process enables me to understand the values and assumptions that shape my person.

I would highly recommend ARQ to anyone wishing to learn the skills of an active, life-long learner.

Grand Illusions
This book was published by the Chicago Historical Society in conjunction with its exhibition of the same name, which ran from May 1, 1993 (the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Chicago World's Fair) until July 17, 1994. After the preface, the book is divided into four sections, by different essayists: MEMORY AND THE WHITE CITY -- how the fair was remembered through souvenirs and publications, and how scholarly writings perpetuated its Beaux-Arts architectural influence into not only subsequent world's fairs, but also American cities, until the modernist backlash of the 1930's. BUILDING AN ILLUSION: THE DESIGN OF THE WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION -- the debate over how best to transform the swampland of Jackson Park into a White City symbolic of Chicago's recovery from the great fire of 1871, including about a page on each of the major structures of the Court of Honor. FIXING THE IMAGE: PHOTOGRAPHY AT THE WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION -- the conflict between the organizers' "official" photographer C.D. Arnold and the legions of fairgoers arriving with their own photographic equipment, ranging from cumbersome tripod-mounted large-plate cameras to the newly invented Kodak "C" handheld box cameras. A CULTURAL FRANKENSTEIN? THE CHICAGO WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION OF 1893 - since one of the book's sponsors is "The National Endowment for the Humanities, a federal agency", this is the obligatory race/class/gender chapter, focusing on the protests made by African-Americans, Native Americans, "Esquimaux", Dahomeyans, etc. Although the exposition had its own Board of Lady Managers, not to mention a Woman's Building devoted exclusively to female accomplishment in the arts and sciences, women are portrayed as marginalized and oppressed. Even the popular Midway (entertainment section) is criticized for making nonwhite cultures seem "exotic" or "savage" (which to the Chicagoan of 1893, they probably were). However, the illustrations here, as well as throughout the book, are excellent -- the color plates are particularly well reproduced. Though currently out of print, this book is a "must" addition to the library of any lover of the Chicago World's Fair, or turn-of-the-century America in general.

Assets and the Poor

If you want to know where your tax dollar goes.........
This was the most cutting edge welfare policy proposal that I have heard. Sherraden also refutes the demonization of the poor that the press would have us believe make up the entire welfare population. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is that it is a little dry. But the early tough going is rewarded in the later chapters with his welfare policy proposals. For anyone concerned about where our entitlement tax dollars are going, this book is a must read.
