The Best Antidote to Chinese Culture Shock
I have conducted college-sponsored tours of China for eighteen years. For most of that time, this little classic has had my highest recommendation as a guide to interaction with the Chinese. The author spent decades as a businessman in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China proper, and he writes with insight and humor. Though the book was produced with the businessperson in mind, for any Western visitor to China it is an excellent, amusing and effective antidote to misunderstanding and culture shock. If you are going to China, be sure to read it.

A Superb Resource in an Entertaining Form
I came to China with a university group to teach English. I am now starting an MBA program in Global Management. The first course is Cross-Cultural Communications. This book should be the book for that course. It can't be because it is too entertaining and practical, not the dry "analytical" stuff. It is too good! I bought it before coming to China and it got left behind when I came. At first, I thought I had memorized it because time after time I recognized something from the book in what I saw in China. Then I realized that it was the accuracy of the book that made it so memorable. Buy it!

timelessly wise advice universally applicable
It was my first time traveling to Hong Kong and to China. I have no business there and I have no intercourse with the Chinese outside of personal relations. I picked this book up to read on the plane. But, man! This is a very good book! Mr. Schneiter seems to have become something of a Chinese himself during the course of 30 some years in the Far East. Clearly written, with fast wit: Universally applicable advice on how to get along with the Chinese, but not only the Chinese. I would think all people who exchange one thing for another while trying to leverage the situation to one's benefit could all be "Chinese". That is, what the author has to say, would apply just as well in Washington DC, or in Moscow, or in New York. BE SMOOTH and CIVILIZED. By that he means, observe, observe, and observe the flow of things before you take calculated action. AND, always leave room for graceful improvisation. The author warns that it is always practice which will get you the art of looking gracefully impromptu. The author himself gives many examples of how he used his own advice to undo many a tight situation he found himself in. I suppose only those who have to do business with the Chinese will continue to pick this one up in Hong Kong. But this book really deserves to be read by more people. A real pleasure. I couldn't put it down.

An Outstanding Contribution
Obsessive compulsive and related disorders are difficult but not impossible to treat. In this comprehensive and highly readable book, Dr. Penzel covers all of the most important aspects of these conditions. As a nationally recognized expert, the author uses his vast knowledge and experience to assist sufferers, relatives, and clinicians as they confront these challeging problems. I highly recommend this book for the knowledge that it imparts as well as for the author's optimism and compassion, which are evident throughout the book.

Obsessive Compulsive
This is a true masterpiece. Not only is this book readable, interesting, packed with facts and informative, but it is also full of positive talk. I have done much research on this topic and by far this book is the most uplifting. It is non judgemental, full of hope, and leaves the reader with a new understanding of the disorders discussed. This book is excellent for sufferers, family members and professionals. Surely worth reading. If I could recommend one book on this topic this would be it. Thank you, Dr. Penzel. I am sure this will help many people.

A book written by an expert
Knowing that Dr. Penzel specializes in OCD, I ordered the book immediately and the book was just what I expected: An authoritative, complete study of OCD and its subcategories, its accompaniements (as Dr. Penzel calls them), its possible causes, therapy, and medication. It is a very professional guide for anyone suffering from OCD or their relatives, even for psychologists and psychiatrists who want to learn about the latest diagnostic and treatment techniques.

brush up your shakespeare--it's fun!
This cd is a great way for families to make good use of downtime spent in cars. It combines biographical detail (kids will be fascinated by such everyday Elizabethan images as traitors' heads on spikes on London's Tower Bridge) with fascinating literary and cultural analysis (rap-weary parents will be intellectually intrigued). Quotations from premier academic authorities are interspersed with appropriate period music and short excerpts from the Bard himself. It flows like an NPR report, and you may find yourself sitting in the car to finish it even after you've reached your destination!

A Wonderful CD on Shakespeare
My whole family enjoyed Getting to Know William Shakespeare. We loved the music, the analysis of his plays, and the interesting facts about his life. The professors on the CD make Shakespeare very accessable to all of us with funny stories and interesting historical background. If you don't know anything about him, you will find this great to listen to. And if you have read his plays, you will also learn something about his craft. The CD is very entertaining. I highly recommend it.

The Joy of Getting Along With the Chinese
Published in Paperback by Heian Intl Pub Co (1995)
Authors: Fred Schneiter and Larry Feign

One of the best, with nice humour, and humanity
In my own meager experience in Asia countries three key things had dawned on me before I found Fred Schneiter's book. They were (1) It's their country and they make the rules, (2) What I saw on the surface was never how it really worked, and (3) The more I learnt the less I knew. Schneiter's book explained all these feelings for me, in a Chinese context, and vastly more. And all with a clever sense of humour, which helps the reader remember the anecdotes and the lessons. The chapters are almost self-contained, and are easy to read, and the insights reveal a wisdom about getting on in China that most of us will never attain. I think that anyone doing business in China would enjoy this book. For neophytes, like me, you would be simply silly not to buy it. Having read and browsed many such books this is one of the best. I've enjoyed re-reading it many times over.

An insightful and humorous look at China and the West
This book taught me a lot about how differently the Chinese view the world and how normal Western concepts do not apply to them. The black-and-white illustrations match the generally light-hearted and humorous tone of the book. Expecially useful for anyone planning a trip to China or planning to stay there

Not A Typical "Networking" Book
Much to my surprise, and delight, I discovered after reading the first few pages that Fred Smith's work is not a manual on what clubs to join and how to select party guests. It's a thorough discussion on how to get the most value out the brief time we have on earth. Smith unapologetically uses his daily Christian walk to illustrate how to obtain real success in business, pleasure, family and personal relationships, and spirtual growth. In fairness to the reader, Smith is generous in sharing his failures as well as his successes. For the greatest benefit, read the entire book. Then, using the chapter titles as a guide, go back and study the parts you really need. Fred Smith's book was a personal "mission statement" years before the term was coined.

A Personal & Professional Development Classic!
I first read this book in the late 80's. It became a favorite. I've started rereading it...something I rarely do for any book. The ideas are simple, yet profound. Nothing gimmicky or hokey here...just sound advice from a highly successful person. I think so much of the book I've bought a box full to give as gifts to clients and friends.

Comprehensive Astrology
This dictionary is a treasure for serious astrologers and students of the arcane arts. It covers many topics not even mentioned in primers or how-to books, like the Arabic points and the Saros cycle. Gettings' book is comprehensive in its historical scope, including coverage of Eastern & Western astrologies both ancient and modern. A wonderful reference guide!

ghost or hoax?
This is a well-researched and objective look at early ghost and spirit photography, which is almost as old as photography itself. The book could probably be read in a day, though there are dozens of intriguing photos. This is the book which first exposed the Cottingley Fairy photos as fabrications. On the other hand, there are included some well-documented photos which cannot be easily explained. Thought-provoking.

How to Buy a Diamond: Insider Secrets for Getting Your Money's Worth
Published in Paperback by Sourcebooks Trade (2000)
Author: Fred Cuellar
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $14.95
Average review score:

Very Informative & Highly Recommended
I found & read this book along with "Diamond Ring Buying Guide" by Renee Newman. Fred Cuellar really gives you insight on how diamonds are rated "The 4 C's" and gives you suggestions on what to look for based on what type of buyer you are. I found his inside information on what goes on in the diamond buying/selling business very helpful. He also provides you with questions to ask a Jeweler to interview them and see if they are a legitimate company to deal with. I like his no-nonsense approach and recommendations of pricing for different cuts, clarity and color. One thing the book lacked was actual pictures for examples. I found Renee Newman's book "Diamond Ring Buying Guide" was excellent in providing color/B&W picture examples but Fred's book was better laid out in educating the reader. After reading Fred's book and looking at Renee's pictures, I felt very confident in going into a jeweler to look at diamonds. In fact, once I went into a jeweler for the first time and explained in detail what I was looking for, I was treated completely different than the other customer's. The sales rep brought out the manager, and both of them treated me with respect. In fact, make sure you use Fred's example of asking the manager if they would GIA certify the diamonds. This tells you alot about the jeweler you are doing business with.

Fantastic money saving tips, the knowledge to back them up
This author comes with a resume that would make him a king in some small European nations; all kidding aside he is a diamond expert who has imparted his extensive knowledge to the reader with panache and ease. I could not put this book down. I was able to read it in one night and I feel totally capable of walking into a jewelry store and buying a diamond with the knowledge that I'm not getting ripped off. He has even added checklists for choosing your perfect diamond and picking a reputable jeweler. The only thing I found missing were pictures of different things to look for, such as diamonds that have been laser treated, the color scales, kinds of inclusions and blemishes as they look under a 10X loupe which is the instrument used to detect defects in a diamond. It is a good book as an adjunct to other books that might not be as easily read and clear in the technical presentation.

A Very Useful Guide
This was recommended to us by a friend and my boyfriend claims that it has been very useful in helping him to make educated decisions about settings and stones in making the big purchase!

Worth a read
I have read many books on this subject and this one stands out as one of my favorites. The author covers many different "situations" and discusses many ideas on how to collect back child support. A lot of research was put into this book and I found it all very helpful and full of interesting ideas and suggestions.

It's Good But Too Similiar to Others
I ordered this book in hopes of obtaining a source of fresh information. I was somewhat disappointed. Yet I was pleased to find that this book was straight forward and easy to read. I'll be sharing it with many of our clients trying to collect child support in the future.

Terrific Guidelines!
Rose and Malone give us great, easily usable guidelines for tracking down anybody. These authors know their stuff. From schools to property to driving records to work records, we all leave tracks. Now we know how to make those tracks work for us! Deadbeat parents, look out now.

Weigh Less, Live Longer: Dr. Lou Aronne's "Getting Healthy" Plan for Permanent Weight Control

Good backgroun info. but same old diet advice
This is a good book with a lot of useful information, but in the end, all it provides is the same old food exchange diet(with slight variations for lower glycemic foods).

Dr. Aronne also seems to contradict his own advice. He says in the book that weight loss must be slow to be permanent. He even tells you not to try and lose any more than 10% of your bodyweight at one time, but the diet section only provides guidance for three different calorie levels: 1200, 1500 and 1800.

This is way too few calories for almost anyone and it will put the body on starvation alert and provoke a binge response. When are doctors going to be honest and admit that decreasing calories by any more than 200 calories a day will trigger an impulse to overeat in most people? Decreasing your calorie consumption by 500 to 1000 calories a day or more is simply too much. Your body will always fight back.

Just results, no gimmicks
If you are looking for the latest gimmick, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a way to lose weight forever, and not regain it again, then we have something here. Dr. Aronne provides the reader with an easy to follow nutrition plan that shows the reader what it takes to be permanently successful at weight loss. Chapter 8 alone was worth the price of the book. In that chapter he tells you how to decrease you calories gradually with each ten percent weight drop. In this way, you are able to eat a decent amount and still lose weight, as well as give your body time to adjust to the new weight. In the end, you still end up with a decent calorie intake, and should be able to keep it up over a lifetime. To me it has been a lot less painless than some diets I had tried in my past that required cutting out whole food groups, or excessively low calorie intake. Folks, the truth of the matter is, if you are taking in too many calories, no matter what kind, they are going to end up somewhere on your anatomy. If you want to live a decent healthy life, you are going to cut back. The question is how much, how long, and just plain HOW. Dr. Aronne answers all of that, and even has suggestions for those of you who are especially resistant to weight loss. It works, it works, it works. The little needle on the scale is finally moving downward for a change. What's more, the diet is nutritionally sound, so for people like myself who have other health conerns, it is safe. Blessings, Dr. Aronne!
