Was very helpful for self study course
I found both this book, and the Level Two edition (called Intermediate on amazon) to be very good. I lived in Russia for about 6 monthes, and before and after this I used these books to self-study Russian. I tried a number of other books, both easier and harder, and found this one worked the best for me. It is a good mix of vocubulary, grammer, and a holistic approach to Russian which I enjoyed. It is easier than the college textbooks I worked with, and provides more stand-alone exercises to drill in the material. With the more advanced textbooks I tried, they provided too many rules too quickly and not enough drills to force you to memorize them. In a classroom environment this might be ok, but for me this approach worked much better. The book is geared to a young audience, probably mostly high school students, but not annoyingly so. You can also get tapes with both books. These are a bit pricey, but useful for doing the listening and pronunciation drills.

Good book for beginners
This is a good book for beginners. It seems to be aimed toward a younger audience, but it's still good for adults. The book focuses on the overall language itself, not just vocabulary or grammar.

I wish I had read this sooner
I read this during my second year of ophthalmology residency and found it to be incredibly useful. It is easy to read with real, hilarious cases to explain the optics. The authors have a great sense of humor. Believe it or not, optics can be funny. I checked it out from our library, but bought my own copy for home because it is so good.

Statistics in Action: Understanding a World of Data
Published in Hardcover by Key Curriculum Press (2003)
Authors: Ann E. Watkins, Richard L. Scheaffer, and George W. Cobb
Amazon base price: $64.95
Average review score:

Statistics in Action - the title is true!
This is a wonderful statistics book if you are teaching AP Statistics or an introductory college course or if you hated statistics in college and want to give the subject a second chance. Before you even get into the first formula, the authors provide a REAL set of data, involving an accusation of age discrimination. The rookie learner is immediately DOING statistics and the authors do not stop there. The book is crowded with useful data - both data gleaned from the real world and from activities throughout the book.
Anyone familiar with statistics education is well aware of the positive contributions of Ann Watkins, Dick Scheaffer and George Cobb. This book is their latest contribution to the growth of statistical knowledge. The writing is clear and most readable. The examples are engaging and there are three types of problems: discussion questions, practice activities and exercises.
I have been teaching statistics in high school and university classrooms since 1976. I am pleased with the growth in the number of good introductory texts. Now there is one more member in the small group of books that I would choose to use to teach statistics. Statistics in Action is a book you MUST have if you are looking at books with "statistics' in the title! Key Curriculum Press has another success to add to its list of great books.

A true Horticulturists guide
This is a 5 volume masterpiece which is definitely the quintessential guide for the very keen gardener and the horticultural professional and would also be an extremely good companion for the student in this industry. W. J. Bean takes us through many genera from A to Z and also includes some principals in the very first volume. A real gem. The books are fairly pricey which is not surprising due to the immense amount of work which went in to producing all the volumes. A true classic.

Fantastically written - couldn't put it down!
Ms. Garner brings the forces that drove the principal character into a very real, very frightening view. Her way with words penetrated this reader to realize the fragility of this man's psyche. From his bizare childhood to his adult alcohol-induced psychosis, the picture of this character elicated hatred and pity from the reader. I can't wait to read more of Anita Garner's work!

An outstanding look at one of the Nation's aviation heros
This book provides an outstanding look at the career of one of this Nation's top aviation heros of World War II. George Preddy was the United States Army Air Force's top Mustang Ace, scoring 23.83 aerial victories in the P-51 Mustang. In addition to his P-51 victories, Preddy also scored three aerial victories while flying the P-47 Thunderbolt. The book, which was a labor of love for its authors, covers Preddy's short life in detail.

Many people who have heard of George Preddy, the great Ace, might be surprised to learn that it was a real struggle and accomplishment for him to even get into military aviation. Through his personal determination Preddy overcame the obstacles that his small stature presented and worked his way into the Air Force. Once this happened, "the rest is history."

Authors Noah and Sox utilized official records, family records and diaries, and interviews with many of the "Bluenosers of Bodney" to prepare this outstanding! story of George Preddy's life. Joe Noah, Preddy's cousin, was able to access George's diary, letters, and other family material and gave this book the personal touch that few others could have. Sam Sox has long been interested in the George Preddy story, and played an important role in the city of Greensboro, North Carolina's decision to name a boulevard after the Preddy brothers, both of whom lost their lives in World War II. Additionally, Sam Sox has produced an excellent video covering the life of George Preddy. Along with an interesting narrative, this book is enhanced with over 100 quality photos.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the history of World War II, and suggest that they add it to their library.

An outstanding book about a man with whom I shared the sky.
I knew George 'Ratsy' Preddy as a fellow-pilot in the 352nd Fighter Group--the Bluenosers. I saw him at briefings and in action, and quickly developed a tremendous respect for him as a dedicated pilot--calm on the ground, aggressive in the air. This book by Joe Noah and Sam Sox is not only a marvelous tribute to his courage and combat achievements, but a mirror of an outstanding person. He inspired those who flew with him. This book brought back many memories. As Editor/Historian of he 352nd FG Association, I recommend it highly.

Great Tribute to an outstanding American
This book is a tribute to George Preddy and all those who loved flying, their country and gave their all for both. It tells the story of one of our greatest fighter pilots during WWII and at the same time gives an excellent description of a fighter pilot's life during the war. A story of dedication and duty that is missing from today's world. Anyone interested in the history of WWII and the Air Force in particular will enjoy this book. I highly reccomend it!

the winters tale
a good read, but can be confusing for kids. It takes a while to comprehend all of the Shakespearian langauge, but is very interesting. It is boring at parts.

The Terrible Costs of Jealous Rage
The Winter's Tale contains some of the most technically difficult solutions to telling a story that have ever appeared in a play. If you think you know all about how a play must be constructed, read The Winter's Tale. It will greatly expand your mind.

The play opens near the end of a long visit by Polixenes, the king of Bohemia, to the court of his childhood friend, Leontes, the king of Sicily. Leontes wants his friend to stay one more day. His friend declines. Leontes prevails upon his wife, Hermione, to persuade Polixenes. Hermione does her husband's bidding, having been silent before then. Rather than be pleased that she has succeeded, Leontes goes into a jealous rage in which he doubts her faithfulness. As his jealousy grows, he takes actions to defend his misconceptions of his "abused" honor that in fact abuse all those who have loved him. Unable to control himself, Leontes continues to pursue his folly even when evidence grows that he is wrong. To his great regret, these impulsive acts cost him dearly.

Three particular aspects of the play deserve special mention. The first is the way that Shakespeare ties together actions set 16 years apart in time. Although that sounds like crossing the Grand Canyon in a motorcycle jump, Shakespeare pulls off the jump rather well so that it is not so big a leap. The second is that Shakespeare captures entirely different moods from hilarious good humor to deep depression and remorse closely adjacent to one another. As a result, the audience is able to experience many more emotions than normally are evoked in a single play. Third, the play's final scene is as remarkable a bit of writing as you can imagine. Read it, and marvel!

After you finish reading this play, think about where your own loss of temper has had bad consequences. How can you give yourself time to get under control before acting rashly? How can you learn to be more open to positive interpretations of events, rather than dark and disturbing ones?

Love first, second, and always!

A Redemptive Tragedy
The Winter's Tale is a lot of things: heart-breaking, exhilerating, funny, beautiful, romantic, profound, etc. Yeah, it's all here. This is one of the bard's best plays, and I can't believe they don't teach this in schools. Of course, the ones they teach are excellent, but I can see high school kids enjoying this one a lot more than some of those others (Othello, King Lear).

The story is, of course, brilliant. King Leontes goes into a jealous rage at the beginning against his wife Hermione. Leontes is very mistaken in his actions, and the result is tragic. Shakespeare picks the story back up sixteen years later with the children, and the story works to a really, really surprising end of bittersweet redemption.

This is one of Shakespeare's bests. The first half is a penetrating and devestating, but the second half shows a capacity for salvation from the depths of despair. Also, this being Shakespeare, the blank verse is gorgeous and the characters are well drawn, and the ending is a surprise unparalleled in the rest of his plays. The Winter's Tale is a truly profound and entertaining read.

The Psychology of Sales Call Reluctance: Earning What You're Worth

Powerful, innovative and pragmatic
The Psychology of Sales Call Reluctance will help you truly Earn What You're [REALLY] Worth.Although I have long been a fan of the motivational books and still feel they have a place in success, too often, as pointed out by Dudley and Goodson, sales people ignore what they really need the most. For example, someone who is great at setting goals but a poor organizer goes to all the goal and motivation seminars, reads all the books and listens to all the tapes on those subjects but ignores organization. Some of the prescriptions such as *thought zapping, *sensory injection*negative image projection *thoughtrealignment and target reversal can eliminate negative thought habits in prospecting and making sales calls. I've used them. They work. The call reluctance self rating scale on pages 27, 28 and 29 will help you to identify your own individual type of call reluctance or call imposter.I think some sales people have been giving this book low scores because you won't find the silly, feel good type of fluff that is in other popular sales training guides or techniques on how to close a sale. Sales judo, features and benefits, gimmicky or 1980's type sales techniques that don't work anymore etc. This book will show you how to identify weaknesses in your sales personality that can help turn you into a sales winner. For more on sales technique I recommend Advanced Selling Techniques, Close the Deal or the Sandler Sales Method. We've entered a new millenium and these technques will be a powerful tool for all sales people who want to excel in the 21st century.Good luck and great selling to you.

Are *You* Earning What You're Worth?
Let me get the negative out of the way first. The authors are just a bit sarcastic for my taste, and in particular, they take a number of what I think are cheap shots at Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). Of course, since I'm a Meta-NLP / Neuro-Semantics Master Practitioner and Trainer, one would expect me to react that way, wouldn't one?

In any event, if you can get past the sarcasm, the subtle and not-so-subtle putdowns of other folks in the sales training industry -- and I certainly did -- this book is great! It's filled with practical techniques for diagnosing whether or not you have call reluctance, which type you have, and what to do about it. The authors are psychologists who have studied the psychology of selling in excruciating statistical detail. Given that I'm a statistician myself as well as an executive sales coach, you can imagine why I like this book.

Anyone can benefit from reading this book
In The Psychology of Sales Call Reluctance, the authors offer practical exercises and innovative techniques to help people recognize and overcome the self-limiting behaviors that keep them from earning what they're worth.
