"Cushla" will make you a believer in books for babies.
Butler's first person account of her developmentally delayed granddaughter's progess, largely due to an immersion in quality literature from her earliest days, will convince you that it's never too early (or too hopeless a cause) for books to expand and enrich the life of a child. Inspiring. Written as Butler's thesis, so the emotion is backed up by research and knowledge.

THE COMPANION: BOOKS AND PEOPLE
Flawlessly told, the story of Richmond's famous black humanitarian and entrepreneur vividly comes to life for young and old readers alike. Branch expertly uses her professional storytelling skills to present factual information, and Rice's background in education is evident in the organization of the tremendous amount of material into 15 succinct chapters. Photographs are interspersed throughout the chapters to visually extend the the text. Walker accomplished a multitude of professional goals while experiencing personal tragedy: the murder of her stepfather, the deaths of two children, her husband and eldest son; and the crippling physical disability that plagued her las years. A life that is inspirational to young people of all races. Walker's biography is a must. Highly recommended. Satan Stalking
Published in Paperback by Forward Movement (1993)
Author: Dorothy Marie England
Amazon base price: $7.40
Average review score:

A must read for people who doubt Satan's existence!
Overcome with fear, and sinking into depression and alcoholism, Dorothy Marie England shows us how demonic forces use our weaknesses to chip away at us and destroy us. Her penetrating story demonstrates how this took place, step by step, until finally demonic manifestations began to occur in her own life, propelling her to seek spiritual help! This book is a must read for anyone who questions the existence of Satan or demons or anyone who is interested in the study of demonic hauntings. Ms. England also explains and shows how mentalities, such as racism, classism, and low self-esteem, so present in our society, are actually demonic in nature--only some of the tools Satan uses to "wear us down." Makes you aware of how the devil can influence your life. Very poingant! My sister and I both read this book in one sitting!

Get to know Dorothy and Oscar
Through this book, you will meet both Dorothy Day and Oscar Romero, two great figures in the history of the Catholic Church. The book is arranged in 7 days worth of readings - a week long retreat. Each day has an opening and a closing prayer, an excerpt from another work, an imagined conversation between Dorothy and Oscar, and suggestions for further reflection - all relating to the day's theme. Day One's theme, for example, is "Conversion" and Day Five's is "The Radical Gospel". The retreat ends with a bilbiography of other suggested readings that are intended to 'deepen your acquiantance' with these two powerful leaders in the struggle for justice and peace.

The tragic queen: Marie Antoinette

Good work, maybe a little detached!
A rather good biography of the famous queen of France, well-documented but a little passionless. The character shines through a lot better in André Castelot's and Stephan Zweig's biographies of the queen.
