Haunting
My interest in the band "Garbage" led me to this book - its title was used by them to create a chillingly magnificent song on their second CD. I found the book itself to be one of the most creative and compelling works I read this year. The story it tells gets under your skin to such a point that I don't recommend it for those already depressed. For the rest of us, it is a chilling look inside a sympathetic character, a young woman dancing around the border between sanity and madness. She knows she is on the verge of losing it all, and knows she is not getting the kind of help she needs from anyone - least of all the mediocre medical personnel who see her as just one more casefile. Yet she's unable to shake the helplessness and displays the lack of will to take control of her own life which is so often found in the insane and/or suicidal. Galloway makes extremely skilled use of innovative page layouts and even unexpected graphics to really show us her character's imbalanced view of the world. We see through her eyes.

An amazing noveloffering insight regarding female depression
Galloway's novel about the depression and life of a middle-aged, female drama teacher living in Scotland, is captivating and insightful. Galloway uses snapshots from Joy's memory as well as emotion filled diction to create a fictional novel with a lasting effect and unique style. This first person narritive, written from the point of view of Joy Stone, a female battleing a depression over the death of her lover. "Sometimes things get worse before they get better. Sometimes they just get worse. Sometimes all that happens is passing time...The whole point is that time passes. That things fade" (Galloway, The Trick is To Keep Breathing). The novel tracks Joy during a year of her depression and gives a more personal understanding of the world of female depression.

Painful, but So Beautiful
This novel is painful to read because Janice Galloway's descriptions of Joy Stone's feelings and experiences are so accurate. We've all felt the way Joy feels at some time or another. The accuracy is so startling that at times it's tempting to forget that this is fiction, and not a non-fiction depression narrative, like "The Beast" or "Girl, Interrupted." Perhaps this is why Galloway added the subtitle, "A Novel." This novel is truly inspiring; it's refreshing to read a novel about depression which maintains a sense of humor. Galloway uses a number of unusual narrative techniques, including spontaneously breaking into dialogues when she's on the phone or talking to doctors, and putting comments in the margins to represent the thoughts that we all have, but don't always acknowledge, even to ourselves. This is a novel I'm sure I'll go back to again and again, because even though the subject matter is depressing and painful, this novel is so beautifully written and the ending is uplifting. This novel will be with me for quite some time.

A good canadian book! Finally!
Finnie Walsh. A book not only fun, but informative as well. This book, written by Steven Galloway is an awesome, book. Unlike the usual canadian books, it just great... If you like Hockey you'll love this book. If you don't like hockey you'll love this book. The book has relationships, between family, friends, and beaus. A wonderful, outstanding read.

Finnie Walsh is Amazing!
Finnie Walsh in my opinion was an eye opening experience it is by far the best book I have ever read and everything about it made me feel more interested. There is not a single bad thing I could say about it! The characters alone made the book, how you understood how they felt at diferent times, how they were perfectly described! This book made me laugh, cry and made me feel emotions that have never occured before in my mind! I couldn't put it down and I will continue to read it over and over again because everytime I am sure that I will recieve more and more happiness sadness and information from the text! I am getting it for everyone for Christmas and I hope that everyone will enjoy this story as much as I did!

Wonderful Story!
I picked up this book mainly because of my job working with high school teachers and students and ended up reading parts of it out loud to my own kids during a car trip. My 12 year old son was hooked, he read the book, then I finished it. It was amazing to have that 'secret book conversation' with my son. I/we both loved the book.

Powerful
I have never read a book that i could not put down,i bought this book yesterday 1/10/03 and just finished it now 1/11/03. My heart goes out to those American Soldiers who were in this battle and how brave and galently they fought,i had never heard of this battle until i saw the movie,i wanted to find out the facts as to what happened in the battle. This book told me everything down to the last detail. This is a book everyone should read to see what its really like in battle. That battle and bravery our soldiers will stay with me forever.

History All Americans Should Know
I recommend this honest and very straight forward book to all who care to know more about the Vietnam conflict. As a kid who was born in the 1960's, my appreciation of the soldiers who fought and gave their lives has been limited to the various movies and stories of the era.

The authors of this book have done an incredible job gathering information from their fellow soldiers (and in some cases those soldiers families) in order to convey and portray what can only be described as an incredibly poignant account of their experiences.

I know that this will be a story I will one day recommend that my own children read in an effort to improve their understanding of the sacrafices such brave people have made for the sake of our continued freedom.

On The Ground At Landing Zone X-ray
I wasn't quite old enough to fight in Vietnam, but after reading this book and listening to this tape, it's as though I had been there. The book was absolutely gripping and the tape ... well ... for those of you who saw the recent movie, Joseph L. Galloway is the on-scene reporter. His rough, unpolished voice is PERFECT for this tape. It's Hal Moore's story recounted by the reporter who flew into battle with him. A priceless, classic combination. I've worn out the tape already ... time to reorder. (Hint: Make sure you get the Galloway edition. The CD has a slick Hollywood-type doing the narration. It's not the same.)

Excellent Reading
This book is a great book for kid's age 14 and up. I say this because I dispise reading, and this book just made me stop everything and start reading. For anybody who can't sit and read a book this one work's. Gauranteed to get your attention! I am a 18 year old male!

Non-Stop Adventure, Scuba Diving, and Beautiful Bahamas!
Just got finished with this book(5/99). It's was great. It's was spell binding until the last page! Descriptions of the islands, under water, boats, people, and the action made you feel you were right there. Excellent book! Personally, I'm going to buy his other "Blue" books...

Like the Sea and boats? You'll like this book!
Don't let the fact that this book is not brand new or not expensive put you off! The characters are great and the price is a bargain! This is a book for techno-types who like the sea and boats. The main character is NOT a superhero and not a real loser either. Gee.. a real person. Good techno fiction.. action, diving, technology.. good stuff. -- Frank Derfle

a warm and helpful guide to any leader of a non-profit
Dr. Galloway has captured in a very readible way some helpful truths for anyone leading a non-profit organization. As a healthcare CEO in a number of organizations over 35 years I found new ways of looking at Boards and Volunteers in Dr. Galloway's book. I wish I had had this book 25 years ago!

His writing style makes these truths very accessible and does so with humor and humility. All of us can learn something from this gem.

Applies to any organization or leadership endeavor.
This book will help most anyone attempting to Chair an organization of any size that has been in existance for a while. Oh, to have had this book to read before I tackled many a group leadership position. I enjoyed reading it, in fact, I couldn't put it down. It may be for professional Pastors, however,t every layman can relate to the issues and learn from its very clever analogies, which, incidently, they will find stay with them.

excellent guide to the challenges of church leadership
Ministry Loves Company: A Survival Guide for Pastors by John Galloway, Jr.

While its title contains both truth and allusion, the subtitle of this book tells us what it's really all about. It is indeed an essential survival guide for pastors written by a seasoned senior clergyman. Rev. John Galloway writes in an engagingly humorous style, and reading his guide is like having an informal heart-to-heart chat with a wise and caring colleague.

Ministry Loves Company distills into 168 pages a lifetime of pastoral wisdom on topics ranging from coping with conflict and competition to church parking problems. Galloway warns the pastor just coming to a new church that it's as tough as being an outsider called on to facilitate an ongoing family reunion. His book is full of thoughtful advice on how to be patient during the gradual transition from listening to leading, and how to share in the existing priorities of a congregation while helping them to develop a new creative vision.

With enough important business to occupy ten clones, as the author puts it, how can the parish minister....

... balance the open-ended demands of preaching, pastoral care, and church administration?
... handle competition among congregation members for program space, budget, staffing, and publicity?
... maintain integrity in the face of pressures to play a competitive "numbers game" against other churches?
... cope with the irrational exuberance of the "born-again" yet shallowly self-centered member?
... deal with the easily offended or emotionally volatile parishioner without taking it all personally?
... in sum, how does the pastor manage and affirm the diversity of gifts and perspectives within the body of Christ?

As Galloway points out, "Few people can appreciate the sheer terror in the heart of the pastor when the going gets tough.... No matter how well we do, we can still be rejected and renounced" (p. 110-111) Having said that, he offers a useful collection of coping strategies for pastors to follow in the thick of a church crisis, while humbly admitting one never has all the answers. A time of crisis must be a prayerful time, he wisely counsels, a time of recognition that "...one of the shrewdest ways evil does us in is to get us believing that we are on the side of goodness and purity while our opponents are the incarnation of evil itself. Such a belief is guaranteed to provoke the most demonic words and deeds from us." (p.117) Would that all our secular leaders shared this profound insight!

Anyone faced with leadership challenges in a voluntary organization would benefit from this book. For the parish minister who would like to avoid a lot of misery by spending just a little time in John Galloway's congenial company, Ministry Loves Company is a survival guide well worth reading.

A stunning success in non-fiction
So often I read a memoir (because how could you classify Dry up and with a twist as Not a memoir) and they become dry and boring by the fifth chapter or so. Not so with Mr. Galloway, who takes us on a journey through his life in fine-dining and through fine-dining itself for a not only poignant trip, but also side-splitting at times, and heartbreaking at others. Dry Up and With a Twist is a success both with its simplicity - Mr. Galloway tells us how it is and what he thinks, no bones about it.. not an author to mince words with his audience, he treats us like people not machines - and with it's complexity - I'm from a small town and know little to nothing about fine dining and I learned quite a bit about the so called uppercrust that frequents such places. What a success, and what a joy it must be to have written such a fantastic book. A must-read for any connoisseur of fine books.

I will never again order Gin & Tonic "with a twist"
I loved this book, "Dry, Up, With a Twist". I learned so much about the do's and don't when eating at a fine restaurant. I felt embarrassed when I thought about some of the things I have done and some of the things I have not. For example, I always order a Gin & Tonic and say "with a twist". How was I to know that I need to trust my bartender? This book was about the patrons who expected to be waited on and about the waiters and their expectations. This is a true story and the characters are very real. Oh my -- who would have thought? I was amazed. I wonder if John Galloway, the author, is even halfway normal after working with and waiting on all these people. I love John Galloway. You get to know him quite well. I immediately picked up on his sensitive and caring nature towards people and found it very appealing. He is extremely witty and quite descriptive of the characters in his book. This is a wonderful book to read for anyone who dines out; you'll never be the same again.

Chef and Writer Give Dry, Up - Two Thumbs Up!
Having had a past career in fine dining myself for over 10 years (I'm a certified chef), and being a writer myself, I whole heartily concur with the experiences as depicted in John Galloway's account of the pit and pratfalls of fine dining. A must read for any of those in the business or those who have the layman's dream "wouldn't it be nice to open a restaurant some day." Don't even think of going into the business until you've read Galloway's "bible" on the subject! This book is also a deep and insightful philosophical look into human nature as a whole. An enjoyable read even if one is not affiliated with fine dining. Galloway should keep writing more, even about other subjects, his style is gripping and he knows how to write a real page turner.

One of the best books for teens and pre-teens
Every teen and pre-teen girl should read this book. It's not like other teen books, and that's one of the reasons it's so good. Emily doesn't really have a boyfriend, she doesn't go to a big high school where she's the most popular and pretty girl, she never says "as if," and she doesn't wear clothes her parents would be ashamed of...in fact, the book is set a long time ago in a place called Prince Edward Island, the author's favorite place in the whole world.

Anyone who has not read this book is missing out on making a new friend -- Emily seems so much like a "real" person, and is explained so well, that you will feel like you have made a new buddy in the process of reading this book. By the author of Anne of Green Gables.

L.M. Montgomery's Best Book
I adore Anne, but Emily is a Kindred Spirit. I've read all of L.M. Montgomery's books, and this one is, without doubt, the very best. And yes - it IS better than Anne of Green Gables.

Emily of New Moon has all the elements of a well-written novel. It has tragic scenes that aren't overly dramatic: the quiet death of her father makes me cry no matter how many times I've read it. It's inspiring: even as a young girl, she struggles with ambition. It's endearing: who could forget the happy, childish adventures of Emily and Ilse? Most of all, it has a sense of humor! (Though, I must point out, LMM's funniest scene ever is in Emily's Quest, where she reads the reviews of her first novel.)

People love Anne because of her sweetness. Emily isn't sweet--she's real. As the narrator writes (I'm paraphrasing) "Many people liked her, many disliked her; no one was ever wholly indifferent to her." My very favorite book.

L. M. Montgomery's very best series...but not for young kids
And yes, like others have said, it's better than Anne.
The Emily series( New Moon, Emily Climbs, Emily's Quest) trace Emily Starr's voyage through adolescence to early adulthood.
It's probably best for older readers as it contains references to sexuality and the supernatural that may be inappropriate for kids or just not appreciated by the younger reader.
I've read almost everything by Montgomery that's published(except for two books), and this is, in my opinion, the best series. Anne of Green Gables is a tour de force of a book, but the series as a whole isn't that great. The Emily series is a sheer masterpiece that's not to be missed, especially for older readers. I read it when I was twelve and read the entire series every year.. it's better every time. Don't skip this one... trust me.

Not Your Average Competitive Running Book
Like the other reviewers, I loved this book. It will keep you interested in running for a long time to come. Henderson makes sense.

But I want to make sure that serious runners know what the book is really about. It's not a book about developing a competitive edge--at least not in the normal sense. It's not about living on the edge--in terms of high mileage training. It's about not falling off the edge--that is, staying healthy and interested in running over the long haul.

As much as I loved the book, I couldn't give it 5 stars because right now I'm in the competitive mode, determined to qualify and run the Boston Marathon. I need more tough training right now than Henderson promotes.

Once I run Boston, I'll come back to this book and love it more than ever.

Good for runners of all abilities
I've only been running for about a year, and I was afraid this book would be too technical, or too focused on competitive/marathon runners. But I've gone through this book with a highlighter time and time again finding helpful tips to make running safer, healthier, and more fun. It's a keeper!

Running can be fun again!!
I am a triathlete, and as such I am always searching for ways to increase both my endurance and my enjoyment of excersize. Joe Henderson, not only makes reading about running fun but offers some unique and worthwhile suggestions for even the serious athlete.

Hey if it isn't still fun to run then read this book and follow his advice. Before long you will wonder why did not think to make these changes earlier and save yourself some unproductive pain.

Also, many of these lessons transfer nicely into other sports so do not be afraid to try them out.

With two men on a boat with a knife - watch out!
The great appeal of this "little" book rests on three main things. Firstly it makes first class drama - like KNIFE IN THE WATER, it has unity of time, action and place. 48 hours on a boat with a stranger and his knife - the 29 year old narrator does not know what he's let himself in for. Secondly it pays great attention to marine jargon and knows the subject of fishing. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, the reader is able to follow the ebbing and flowing of the thoughts and feelings of the narrator on this emotional and philosophical journey. This novella is good enough to be used as a study text by High School literature students. Read it in one sitting and enjoy. Oh, I forgot to mention, the presentation of it by Chronicle Books, San Francisco is such that it is good to look at, touch and retain. It would make an excellent gift.

Fishing book about the human condition; bests "Old Man..."
Read this book standing up because it was fabulous. A book with a smooth writing style seldom matched by any of the 'popular' authors today--too bad. Remembering the simple emotional twists and turns during this fishing trip for mens soul's set me out to want to own it and put it in my library for all my friends to read. Paul Poetzsch, Charlotte

a real page turner
While reading this book, the weather did not change outside. Read it. Now. Thanks.
