Patrick Gallo's, The American Paradox: Politics and Justice is an engrossing book. His approach is unique in that the author seeks to explore the why of political trials. He is not just writing a history but a selective one calculated to explore their causes.His is both scholarly and readable. I hope it receives a wide audience because it is a subject for all Americans to read and ponder the issues which Gallo presents.

I might point out that his book was only published in paperback in 2000. It was not published prior to this hence there is no hardcover edition. I tried to obtain it in hardcover but was told none existed.

This is a comprehensive, engagingly written history of the use of the American judicial system for political purposes. Although very useful for students of both law and political science, it is also an informative, balanced, and enjoyable read for the general reader of American history and politics. It brought back many memories of the McCarthy trial period as well as providing substantive background on many earlier political trials that I had only encountered in passing. A unique book in its field.

This book is not out of print it is being published by Howard University Press in September/October 1999

Gallo's analyses are perceptive and pernetrating. His approach is fresh.The author has written what is considered a classic. Much of the book is applicble not only to the Italian-American experience, but to other ethnic groups as well. Italians continue to be stereotyped and this book present a true picture of the Italian American experience and in the author's words " a portrait of courage, hard work, love and humanity. As such it is a source of self-awarness, pride, and strength for future generations."
