Galinsky is right on the mark -
This is a terrific book! Finally, we have something that deals head-on with parent-child communication from BOTH sides. Galinsky's insight and tips are invaluable. I would recommend this book to anyone who balances going to work and raising children. It's already changed the dynamics between myself and my kids with regard to work.
Finally, someone asks kids. Practical info, great advice.
This book is a MUST for working parents. For young, working moms like my daughter and daughter-in-law, this book gives practical suggestions on how to manage their work and family life better. Best of all, the results of Galinsky's survey seem to tell working parents that they don't have to feel guilty about the time they're not with their kids, because the kids don't seem to mind. I like her terms for time with the family: "focus" time and "hang around" time. All parents - working and not - who feel stressed out about not giving enough time and efforts to their children need to read this book. I'm giving it to my married children and all the young parents on my holiday gift list. It's great!

The best book I've seen on preschoolers
I bought several books at once on 3 year olds or preschoolers and this was the only one worth a flip. All the others I read in one sitting (like 1/2 an hour) and put on the shelf. I probably will not pick them up again. But this one I have kept on my nightstand for reference again and again.
Its value lies in the fact that most topics are covered fairly in-depth. From what's available out there, you'd think preschool years were relatively trouble free and easy to handle for parents. The other books I've seen are so short and give these shallow, pat answers to everything. This book seemed to examine subjects from more than one angle and offer more than one strategy. It also relies heavily on case-studies and real-life examples.
A Must-Have for parents of children 2-5.
If you can only buy one book to get you through your children's preschool-age years, this is it. This book is worth buying rather than borrowing because you'll want to refer back it to over and over. It covers discipline and child development, as well as the larger realms of family and school, in a manner that is accessible, reassuring and very informative. First-person narratives are sprinkled throughout, which makes it enjoyable to read. A very wide range of issues are discussed, in a tone that respects both the parent and child.

Adds Nothing New
Ask the Children is an interesting book, but one that could be, and probably has been, summarized in a much shorter Parents Magazine article and still be quite useful. Bottom line, the fact that both parents work does not affect children as much as how their parents treat them affects them. Still, this would be an excellent resource for research purposes. I just don't think you need to spend your money simply because you are interested in the topic.
Great reference on how to raise teenagers
This book is very well-written and well-structured. It assisted me a great deal to write a graduate paper on how teenagers are affected when parents do not play an active role in their child's life. The learnings from the study are very interesting and I highly recommend it to anyone who is a parent.
Enjoy!
