The book traces the history of late night television from the early 50s through the first couple of years of Carson's California Tonight show.
The subtitle of the book, "An anecdotal history.." is accurate. The book is chock full of stories.
Still, a vision of the show becomes clear. The show has changed focus over the years. Steve Allen's show, the smartest of them all, was capitivating. Jack Paar's show was provacative, while Carson aimed to comfort his audience.
The whys of it are the most interesting.
The book needs updating. The evolution from Carson to Leno would be fascinating, as would the effect of the cultural changes in the decades since the original edition.
Still, for those interested either in the show or the evolution of television thinking, "Tonight" is interesting and enjoyable reading.
