Sandy Gage's book is a very detailed trip report of his time on the Canol Heritage Trail as well as a good historical overview of the Canol Project. The chapters alternate between his trip report and the history. While the trip report is not as up to date as the reports one will find on the Canol Heritage Trail web page, it is very detailed and the history provides a good explanation of why the trail even exists.
