A RARE INSIGHT.
This is a delightfully funny little book in which author/psychic Elizabeth Fuller shares her experiences with her legendary house guest - Bette Davis, who stayed with Fuller and her husband and small son for a month! Amusing episodes include Liz taking Bette to McDonald's (she promised her son a visit) and the attention Davis attracted. Bette and the author watched JEZEBEL together one evening as it aired on the telly. I liked the book because it gives us insight into the real Bette Davis, who could be very child-like and just as vulnerable as anyone. Well worth reading!

Ready for Bette?
Who could ever be ready to have Bette Davis, in the flesh, come and stay in our own home? What was supposed to be a few days turns into months for our admirable author, who tries to the best of her ability to do the impossible - please Ms. Davis.

Ms. Fuller lives many of our dreams come true when she takes on what turns to be an arduous task. It doesn't take long for the movie queen to wear out her welcome. Though Bette keeps Ms. Fuller hopping, the end result is a beautiful book of an inside day to day look at one of our most beloved stars. Davis fans should love it.

very cute
If you're looking for light, airy humour, definately get this book. It portrays Bette Davis off-screen and in someone elses house and the results are hilarious! Don't pass this one up!

POWERFUL!!
This is a very touching book of the life and work of a great woman of prayer. Written by a skeptic turned believer! See what doctors have to say when they find out that their patients are healed through prayer! Well done! Great review from the news media!

Entertaining!!
Grace is a woman who signs gospel music. While singing people felt that they were healed of sickness. The author conducted a very educated investigation and found doctors who were baffeled. Peopled really were healed through prayer. Grace's life is also interesting and fun to read about. The book has a smooth reading style.

Great book!
Fun and interesting! Grace is a real, proven, woman of prayer and faith! Refreshing to read of someone like this! Stories of people healed are well done! Grace's life is interesting.A very good read for women who want to make a good case that women make good leaders!

An absolute must for any one working with young children.
I first came across this book while student teaching and fell in love instantly. I have used it for many theme units - letter (W), farm unit, and rhyming words unit. I have even made flannel board pieces to go along with the story and put in my literacy centers. My supervising teachers loved the flannel pieces so much they had me make them some also. You children/students will love this book and will in time learn to read it themselves, just as my kindergartners did. GET THIS BOOK :).

Absolutely loved by children, the favorite on the shelf.
Be prepared to read it over and over again. The pre-schoolers laugh and giggle. They love to say "Wishy-Washy" and can't wait til the next page that opens up. A short enough book, even your littlest reader knows the next page.

Ms Wishy-Washy is a delightful book for new readers.
Ms Wishy-Washy is a colorful picture book for new readers. The cow, pig, and duck see the mud, and they wade, roll, and waddle in it. Ms Wishy-Washy then scrubs each animal clean. Then guess what the animals do next?

The book presents one word change per page and gives the new reader enough repetitions so that the reader learns the repeated words. The illustrations are marvelous. Children love this book, but so do adults.

Preschoolers love this book!
As a preschool teacher, I look for books that actively engage young children and are able to pull them in to the story. This book certainly does that. Children quickly pick up the rhythym of the story. They relate to the characters. In our preschool, we have a teddy bear that we send home with the children, along with a copy of the book. The children love to be able to "read" the story to their family. They then "write" a story about the bear's adventure while at their home. This book is a perfect link for this activity. Parents and children alike love this story. Thank you Dorothy Butler for a wonderful story!

delightful book for the very young
My almost-two-year-old really enjoys this book. The pictures are very bright and colorful, the situations familiar. The different "lists" for each scenario are engagingly highlighted, and each list is made up from a master group, stimulating young minds to remember what has been used more than once, and in what situations. The pictures of each activity also can serve as a kind of "where's waldo?" game, where your child can find the brown bear. Very lyrical sound, pleasant to read, which is good, because in my house, its requested more than once.

First steps in reading.
This book was reviewed in a graduate course in reading that I was taking. My Brown Bear Barney is a predictable print book. Such books are excellent in the very early stages of reading. Children memorize the book as you read it over and over and over again. Repetition the very thing our adult mind questions, children ask for repetition that they need. They learn to "read" you the book even when the book is not there. This stage of memorization is the first stage of reading. The child then moves to recognizing the words. For example, "Is this word 'bear'?" So both kindergarten teachers and parents can use this book. It is good to have a half dozen of these predictable print books at home. (Look up: Sue William "I Went Walking".)

Does anybody know?
If it is possible to secure The Paris Review - Interview with writers published by Penguin through the 1970's and 80's

fantastic read
The Paris Review is the best literary magazine around (even though they've rejected all of my stories). But anyway, the interview and stories are top notch. I love the blend of unknown writers and famous writers. This issue is especially good, for it's a concept issue, "New British Writing." The forum is excellent, with each author asked to give their opinion on, of course, the state of "British" literature. Furthermore, George Plimpton is very inspiring. Just reading an issue wants to make you write better or start your own magazine.

Mrs. Wishy-washy Delights Again
I teach kindergarten, and my students have read all the books about Mrs. Wishy-washy and her animals. This book has the same fun, joyful tradition of the other stories. The children's immediate comment was "Read it again!". One child wanted to write to Joy Cowley to see if she was going to write another one. This book is a winner.

Fun To Read
I have recently purchased this book for my 2 year old and she cannot put this book down. The pictures are wonderful and full of color. The pictures are so big and the story plot is not that long so that for non readers it is just great and lots of fun to read. Suggestions, make noises as you read the few lines and have them call out and descripe the colors and animals seen on the pages. I truly recommend this book because most importantly my daughter loved it and I loved seeing her face.

Wonderfully illustrated by Elizabeth Fuller
In Dorothy Butler's delightful picturebook story, My Brown Bear Barney At The Party, Barney's young owner takes him to Harold Hinkel's birthday party. The trouble begins when Harold's little sister thinks Barney is her present! She decorates Barney with the paints that Harold got for his birthday and then drops him into the aquarium! And that's how Barney arrived back home much cleaner than when he left! Wonderfully illustrated by Elizabeth Fuller, My Brown Bear Barney At The Party is a recommended picturebook for youngsters ages 4 and up. Also highly recommended are Dorothy Butler's earlier teddybear Barney picturebooks: My Bear Barney and My Brown Bear Barney In Trouble.

The Roots of Treason: Ezra Pound and the Secret of St. Elizabeth's
Published in Paperback by Pan Macmillan (31 December, 1984)
Author: E. Fuller Torrey
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Politics of Mental Illness
Torrey is the most original and definitive chronicler of mental illness and this previously out-of-print book is a stunning example of why. In Roots of Treason, Dr. Torrey takes on St. Elizabeth's Hospital which conspired to label the poet Ezra Pound, 'mentally ill' in order to help him avoid a prison sentence for treason. It is a delicious commentary on the intersection of cold war politics, liberalism, and the abuse of mental institutions. In previous books, Dr. Torrey has taken on the American Psyciatric Association (Freudian Fraud), politicians who kicked the mentally ill out of hospitals (Nowhere to Go), misguided mental health advocates (Out of the Shadows) and others. He has also expanded our knowledge of Schizophrenia (Schizophrenia and Manic Depressive Disorders) and provided invaluable assistance to those who have schizophrenia or have someone in the family who has it (Surviving Schizophrenia). This book differs from other Torrey works in that it should be of immense interest to those who have no interest in mental illness, per se, but are interested in the life Ezra Pound and the literati who surrounded him. The book details Pound's escapades in Italy, atraditional lifestyle, and return to America that ultimately ended in him being charged with treason. It's a fun, fast, informative read, ridden with blunt Torreyisms. SO glad it is back in print

What Christian Fiction Should Be
I really enjoyed this book. The stories are easy to read and enjoyable. My favourite story by far was the last one, "Measure of a Man" by Susan May Warren. This story is, in my opinion, exactly what Christian fiction should be. This is no small thing since it has been my experience that all too often Christian fiction lacks so much of what is supposed to make it Christian fiction. Measure of a Man is absolutely chock-full of truth. It isn't just a story about the lives of people who happen to be Christians and say little one-line prayers now and then, it's a story that teaches the reader more about God's character and causes them to grow, something that even the first two stories, though enjoyable, fail to do in my opinion. It's a story that is so full of truth and encouragement that it can minister even to mature Christians, as well as non-Christians or seekers. The author does a great job of making the story line believable and the development of the romance realistic in a very short amount of time. This again is no small feat as it is something many romance writers (both Christian and non-Christian) seem to have trouble achieving. The story line is high paced and intriguing, and has elements of suspense, mystery, tragedy, and comedy as well as romance. One of the things that really set this story apart from others is the unique writing technique employed by the author. The story outlines both the heroines' and the heros' perspective on certain issues, giving unique insight into the differences between the way men and women view the same things. This serves to remind women readers that men see us and our beauty very differently than we see ourselves. I find this technique to be very insightful, healthy and encouraging for women, especially in today's society. In addition to everything else, this story is very well written, something which is unfortunately not always the case with Christian fiction. In my opinion, this story is a contender with any non-Christian fiction of its class, and I definitely recommend it. And the really great thing is that apparently this story is the first published work by Susan May Warren, something that means any future works by her are sure to only get better!

Great uplifting romance!!!
This is the type of book that you can sit down, read, and just FEEL GOOD about yourself. When most people think Christian Fiction, they think strict and boring. I can tell you that this book is far from that. It is three Novella's in one book. It starts out with a story that is quite good. The second story sucks you in further, but the third story, Measure of a Man was one I couldn't and didn't want to put down. I recommend this book to anyone that wants a good romance without the raunchiness of a lot of romance books out there. All the authors were great, but Susan Warren is one to WATCH!!!

Thank you Ladies!

5 Stars for MEASURE OF A MAN!
Susan Warren's offering, Measure of a Man, is wonderful! Endearing characters and a page-turning plot, romance at its very best and a precious message neatly woven in. I can't wait to read more by this incredible new author!
