This is a seminal text for those clinicians truly wishing to begin to use hypnosis in their practices. It contains all the basic theory, techniques, research, clinical cases and dilemmas of a hypnotherapy practice. His seminars are equally wonderful, with ample theory, practice and case review. Although his style can be initially experienced as intellectual, having trained with him, I find him a brilliant and compassionate clinician. I highly recommend this book to the serious clinician. (Oops! I apologize for having written two reviews of this text, although both are true. I simply forgot I had already written one, due to delay in posting time. The book is not a fun read, dealing with research in a very technical and statistical way. Just the same, it meets the intent, providing a balanced and thorough profile of what is going on. There is something here for any interested person."An Ego-Psychological Theory of Hypnosis" by Erika Fromm was probably my favorite. "Dissociation and Theories of Hypnosis" by Ernest R. Hilgard was also quite good, as was "Hypnosis, Psychopathology, and Psychological Regression" by Michael R. Nash. Best of all, the book has writings from such a variety of authors that all should find something of value.

This is a comprehensive work detailing the intricacies of treatment of complex disorders utilizing hypnosis and behavioral medicine techniques. Clinical protocols are well supported by research and case description. This is an essential text for the practicing clinician and is extremely well written on a broad range of treatment options and disorders.
