"Bonnie and Clyde" Now and Then
This book is a very good collection of essays that review and analyze Arthur Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde" in the context of the 60's and our own time. Discussions around the movie that have taken place at the time of its release and today have altered significantly. And that is what the book reflects on. Arthur Penn's essay in the collection gives an enlightening impression on the making of "Bonnie and Clyde" and describes the difficulties connected with the production of the film. His and David Newman's (who is analyzing the on going discussion of what "Bonnie and Clyde" is really about)pieces stand in refreshing contrast to the "academic" interpretations of the movie, because they reveal more than a view from outside that only sees the movie and succeed in giving a feeling for the artistic process instead of just analysing the final result. Steven Alan Carr's and Stephen Prince's essays offer wonderful contextualizations by looking at "Bonnie and Clyde" in the context of the film's influence on and from society and the film's influence on violence in American film history. This is for sure one of the books one should read in an attempt to understand "Bonnie and Clyde" in its historical context and its significance for American film history. And it is not only a source of knowledge and thought it's definitely also a lot of fun.

Bloated Dream
This is a wonderful subject: the writer's life and all its frustrations. This book, however, should have been written by someone else.

Friedan should have been a poet -- not an essayist. All of the sweet metaphors and delicate descriptions make ones teeth ache. She finishes chapters of dream-like musings with a cold, hard nugget of truth. The book could be pared down a couple hundred pages.

A lot of times, I asked myself, "What's her point?" I wanted more pain, more suffering. I wanted to relate more and couldn't.

Be Courageous and Keep Writing!
That's the advice that Friedman gives in her introduction:
"Successful writers are not the ones who write the best sentences. They are the ones who keep writing...believing in the value of their work, despite the difficulties." Friedman presents many of those difficulties in her own life in a very honest and revealing way, starting with "Envy, the Writer's Disease." The only cure for envy? "Returning to my work," the author says. Friedman covers many other problems in writing, among them: Distraction, writing about those still living, writing schools, getting the meaning into your stories, writer's block, and what happens when you finally are published. (You mean life doesn't instantly become a bed of roses? Uh...no...)

'Writing Past Dark' is an honest, moving, and sometimes funny look at the life of a writer. Writers at every level will be able to identify with many if not all of the essays here, which make for excellent reading. If you are a beginning writer, this is a great book for giving you a glimpse of what may be in store for you. For seasoned veterans, the book will be a work you can identify and sympathize with.

A life-saver for the solitary life of writing
What a thrill to find a wise, consoling voice in the solitude that is the writer's life! This book helped me recognize my fears and desires that had been keeping me from my work, and helped me rededicate to the real voice instead of the chatter of all the false.

Beautiful as it is good!
The Portuguese Bean Soup recipe is really the best I've ever had.

The book is broken down by seasons which I found to be more authenic as well as easy to use. Most people don't realize that Hawai'i does indeed have seasons-other than the tourist season.

My step-father, a native of Hawai'i, and I have had much fun shopping for some of the ingredients here on the "mainland". We have been able to find just about everything to make several of the recipes (and neither of us live in a large town).

For some great Portuguese Bean Soup, you have to get this book!

ATaste of Heaven
After many trips to Maui over the years we finally tried Hali'Imaile General Store. It was my Birthday and wanted to try a new place. What a treat! The service was the best Joan was our fantastic Server and made us feel like Royalty. Her suggestions made our dinner the very best it could be. Since that first trip we have had many, many dinners and taken our Clients and family there for dinner, we get such rave reviews we seldom take new Clients anywhere else except when in a hurry on time or for a little more casual bite we go to "that other place" they have ribs too! We enjoy the fantastic variety of foods. I fell in love with the fishcakes at first bite had to go back the next day and ordered them just for me NO!sharing. My family and friends know if you want to please me with a "gift" a dinner gift certicaate works.Where else would I want to go. One of my favorite deserts Pina Colada Cheesecake this was the most Heavenly taste. I tell people when we take them to the Restraunt its WONDERFUL and still they cant believe how good the food and service is. Mahalo for all the great times we have had at your Place and they other place too! Bev & Joe you have really done a great job keep up your part and we'll keep up ours "eatting at your places with family, friends and clients" My best Friend gave me a gift certificate after 2 trips to the restraunt in a week we had to go back to Portland, Joan sujested since I love the food why not take a cookbook back so I did.My daughter who loves cooking stole my book. So had to buy a new. Need to be able to get a fishcake fix. Now after several more trips we now live here and eat at both of your places alot. Have to go to Joes for Crab Dip. They to have a great staff but there is no place like Hali'Imaile General Store.I flew to PDX on business 15 times this year always tell people on the flight they have to go eat at both your places it never suprises me when we run into those people at dinner. Now I'm hungry I think I'll go make reservation for dinner tonite!!!!! See you at Hali'Imaile General Store we are the couple at the table by the window! Agian Much Mahalo Bev & Joe You have done a great job! Maui has alot of fine Dinnng and truly this is our Favorite!

WowWee Maui
I purchased this book several months ago in anticipation of hosting a baby shower with a luau theme. I spent several months agonizing over which of the many amazing dishes I should make. I settled on the soba noodle salad, pork tenderloin with pineapple chutney (I omited the mushroom polenta) Paella and pineapple pie. It was amazing. although the recipes involve a boatload of chopping, and in some cases, a lot of ingredients, most can be made one or two days ahead. Anyone interested in fresh, complex flavors and textures should buy this book. My guests ran the gamet of tastes and ages, but I ended up with very few leftovers. I am a cookbook affeciando and I say this is a Great Great Book. I'd even fly to Maui to have them cook for me.

Zero Stars Was Not An Option
Now that Bonnie Friedman has successfully completed therapy, hopefully this review will not bother her. Sitting in with Friedman and her therapist Dr. Sing for almost the entire 274 pages is tedious at best. The book is an extremely thorough and intelligent demonstration of the therapy process. However, to those unfamiliar with the therapy process, this book will likely come across as very self-absorbed and whiney, fostering the stereo-type that those in therapy are self-centered individuals who spend time blaming their issues on others. The book is also painfully detailed. For instance, descriptions of the four-hour car journey to the therapist's office left me feeling like I was driving four hours. Spend your money on therapy, not this book!!!

Hits the nail on the head
Finally, a gifted writer conveys exactly what powerful therapy is really like! So many millions of people have been telling their secrets in darkened offices in pursuit of transformation, yet that sense of secrecy has kept anyone from openly conveying this extraordinary experience until now. And just our luck, Bonnie Friedman is the one that decided to do it. After reading her first book, Writing Past Dark, I would have been delighted to read her on any subject. She has such a wonderful ability to create an engrossing world and intrigue you through it with a sense of fresh discovery.

Absolutely compelling and beautiful
Bonnie Friedman's book is mesmerizing in its honesty about the "warts and all" experience of an intense psychotherapy. She has the strength and courage to write about the details that matter in the patient-therapist relationship: how everything becomes imbued with emotion, from the bottoms of one's own feet to the pictures on the wall of the therapist's office. She turns such seemingly tiny moments into a page-turning narrative. Her prose is beautiful, her insights surprising, and again, always so honest. I am grateful to the author for putting this book into the world.

Not for ectopic pregnancy...
If you have had an ectopic pregnancy, do not purchase this book! While blighted ovums and molar pregnancies are devastating occurances, they are very different than ectopic pregnancies. This book groups the three together, even mentioning them as "a mass of tissue". My ectopic pregnancy was 14 weeks, and he was anything but tissue. I found this book to very insensitive on the loss of a pregnancy due to ectopic. True that the woman's health is important in this type of pregnancy, but the book seemed to only focus on this aspect of ectopic pregnancy.

Helpful for families, too
I found a lot of good information and advice in this book as I coped with an ectopic pregnancy--not only for myself, but also for my husband and for our families. Although the section on ectopic pregnancy does not adequately address the treatment options (or the emotional ramifications of extended methotrexate therapy), the general text dealing with miscarriage really helped me.

This book helped me to realize I am not alone
This was a good book for people who have experienced 1 or more miscarriages. It does not have to be read cover to cover. Each chapter is a separate entity, you only need (or want) to read the chapters that are applicable to your situation. It was a book that made me feel as though I was not alone in this situation.

Big disappointment
The Eyewitness Guides are an oustanding series, so I bought this one without a second thought. Alas, this seems more like a placeholder than a serious attempt at writing a guidebook - a kind of "watch this space" advertisement masquerading as a book. It's so thin, in fact, that the cover seems to sag; the spine is thicker than the pages! The coverage of Oahu is decent, so if you only plan to go to Honolulu, the book might be worthwhile. But the coverage of Kauai (where we spent most of our time) and the Big Island were very poor. I'd very highly recommend the "Ultimate Kauai Guidebook" for Kauai instead.

Too bad
I am a big fan of Dorling Kindersley Travel Guides, so I was greatly disappointed when I received this pamphlet sized guide to all of Hawaii. It contained slightly more information than I would expect from airport brochures on arrival. With roughly 10 picture covered pages per island, the guide is attractive, but not very useful.

Very helpful guidebook, nice photos, needs to be updated.
I always use the Eyewitness travel books when I travel to new places. These books are concise and very reader-friendly. The Hawaii guide was extremely useful in planning our honeymoon in Hawaii: we used it to plan all of our activities and were very pleased with the results. Some things are outdated (such as times of Lu'au on Kauai), but overall this book is great.
