A life-time accomplishment by two world-class experts.
Two great experts on the history of the Sudan coordinated a fine study of the only time a force of regular African troops were deployed to the New World. Taking place during the French intervention in Mexico, this is the story of a battalion of Sudanese infantry who fought against Juarez and his Mexican patriots.

Hill and Hogg start off with a look at the Sudan during the first half of the 19th century. Then part of an Egyptian empire, they explain why these soldiers would be sent to Mexico, and how this impacted on Egypt's foreign relations.

The work covers a wide range of topics, ranging from recruitment, training, deployment, and combat. Also nice is a look at how the surviviors played important roles in the failing Egyptian empire of the 1870s-80s.

American, French, Egyptian, and Sudanese sources are employed. An interesting work that will proabaly never be surpased. Sadly, it was Richard Hill's last book.

as fun as it is inviting
I admit I enjoyed a voyeuristic pleasure from the behind the scenes peek the book offers of daily life at Boulud's restaurant.
The chef seems so fun and fast moving and like he's actually daring you to read on and try a recipe. In the very least, I know I'll try to recreate one of the yummy sounding staff meal dishes. As for the beautifully illustrated eight course tasting menu I guess I'll just read longingly - or - go ahead and make reservations.

A thoughtful and original contribution to business ethics
This is an outstanding contribution to the growing body of works in business ethics. The book handles complex philosopical topics with clarity and precision. It is a unique book in that as a text it also makes several important and original theoretical contributions to the field. The book's central thesis that corporations are morally responsible agents is developed skillfully and applied to a number of significant issues in business ethics, particularly issues of corporate punishment, corporate political activities, and corporate activities in the global economy.

Even if you don't speak French, this book is a fascinating history of language -- and much of it relates to English. I came away with a huge curiosity for more knowledge about the history of words! It's one of those books that has so many interesting facts you want to tell everyone around you.

Great French Revolution
Published in Hardcover by Consortium Book Sales & Dist (1996)
Authors: Peter Kropotkin and Petr Alekseevich Kropotkin
Amazon base price: $53.99

The single best history of the French Revolution
Kropotkin's history surpasses even the greatest classical treatments of the French Revolution. His emphasis is on the purely liberating aspects of the Revolution, and he takes lessons from the Commune which are still relevant for modern progressives, radicals, revolutionaries, anarchists, syndicalists, and communists.

Kropotkin himself is an anarcho-communist, opposing all authoritarian forms of government, and this is reflected in his dynamic and highly spirited interpretation of the French Revolution.

One of the best linguistics books I own
I'm a bit biased, since my mother is Canadian and we have Cree blood, but overall this book is one of the best linguistics books I've read in a long time. The book gives the history of the "impossible language" (as quoted from the book) that formed from French and aboriginal Canadian languages. The book isn't written only for expert linguists, so anyone can understand the book. Some parts may be difficult for beginners, but those problems are easily solved.

For anyone interested in learning about a language that most of the world doesn't understand, this book is a gem. It won't teach you the language, but it will definitely help you respect and love what might be an ancestral language for you.

a gripping read
This short book gives a gripping and moving account of the French revolution. It acts a great introduction to the subject. It is written from a Marxist viewpoint. For Marxists the French Revolution is rich in lessons for the struggle to change society today, this book draws some of those lessons out.

Good intro to Provencal cooking
I like this book, but it does point out one weakness in Provencal cooking...a slight lack of variety. There are multiple gratin recipes, good fish dishes, etc. It also doesn't shy away from organ meats, etc., much like the region itself. Like all the books in this visually stunning series, this one has lovely photography.

BIG AND BEAUTIFUL
I was a little suspicious of the series. After all, should we trust a book more suitably sized for the coffee table than for the kitchen counter? But my mistrust was misguided. The food is wonderful. All people have assumptions about "others," and one of the assumptions Americans make about the French is that their food is very difficult to prepare and relies on expensive ingredients. The truth is that French food need not be difficult and that it is a cuisine that recognizes the beauty of each season. Since my children bought this book for me, we have been building seasonal rituals around it. For example, we get salt anchovies from the neighborhood Italian deli for our Christmas eve appetizer. At Mardi Gras, we make the oreilles found in this book, which are the pastries sold as "pig's ears" or "angel wings" in the last days before Lent by Polish bakeries in Detroit. Depending on the bakery, they were known as "pig's ears" or "angels wings." My only criticism of the book is that I feel the need to keep it open in the dining room, lest kitchen grease spoils it.

Oh la la!
French born and 4th generation provençale, I take pride in the cuisine from my homeland and I have to confess I was a little wary about what I would find in this book. Well, the authors did a wonderful job at promoting the gastronomic traditions of Provence without betraying them. My grand-mother, our family's head-cook, and our culinary inspiration would have given her seal of approval without hesitation, would she have been around to discover this wonderful recipe collection and it is with her and my homeland in mind that I enjoy preparing the recipes featured in this excellent collection for my own enjoyment and the one of my (American) husband and our friends.

Review for Peter Pan
You will laugh, cry and be confused when you read this book. This book can teach you that what you think is good is not always good.

There is a boy named Peter Pan. He sprinkles fairy dust in Wendy and her two brothers. Then he shows them how to fly. He takes them to Neverland and shows them to the Lost Boys who live there. Wendy becomes their mother. She makes up rules, like any other mother would do. The boys have to follow these rules. Everything was fine until Captain Hook came with his crew to where the boys and Wendy were. While Wendy and the boys were at the lagoon, where they go every day after dinner, they see a girl named Tiger Lily, princess of her tribe. She was captured by Smee, one of Captain Hook's men. Then Peter saved her. A few days later Wendy and the boys were on their way to Wendy's house when they too were all captured by Captain Hook. Then Peter saves them. Then the lost boys, Wendy and her brothers go home. All except for Peter.

It is mostly about what the people in the book think is right with childhood. The kids in the book think that if you grow up it is bad, but in our case it is actually good.

Peter Pan is a violent book not really made for children under the age of 10 but people 10 and up can read it. It is violent because of the language that is spoken and the idea that killing could be fun. Also, the vocabulary is very difficult for children under 10 to understand. Even if you're older it is difficult to understand.

Overall, it is a good book but watch out for the violent ideas if you are reading it to little children.

A classic
This is an utterly charming work. It has been retold myriad times, but nobody else has done it as well as the original teller, J. M. Barrie.

It's difficult to know what to say about a book like this... everybody knows the story. But I guess that unless you've read this book (not just seen a movie or read a retelling), you don't really know the character Peter Pan, and without knowing the character, you don't really know the story. So read it.

By the way, if you enjoy this, you probably would also like "Sentimental Tommy" and its sequel "Tommy and Grizel", both by Barrie. There are differences (for one thing they're not fantasy), but there are also compelling similarities. Anybody who found Peter Pan a deep and slightly bittersweet book would be sure to enjoy them.

Best Audio Book in my ten year search
Driving with young children in the car quickly convinced me that it was unsafe to not give them something to listen to. After ten years I have collected a large (30+) bag of books-on-tape. I have also loaned them to others and asked for opinions. Peter Pan (read by Wendy Craig) is not only my favorite, but also the favorite of my wife and most of my friends. It is excellent for all ages (4 to 80) and even most hardened teenagers. Humour, presentation, ... a prefect 10.
