Extremely sophisticated and at the same time much comprehensive it gives you a chance to elaborate your own steps, conclusions within the web of the main characters relationship.
It is all about love and people, their choices and consequiences, their desires and real acceptances, their abilities to go on... If you are still a romantic soul despite the reality of life and believe in a very strong, very emotional and passionate feelings and most important believe in people who dare to be outlaws of the society in expressing those feelings, you will be an eternal admirer of Madame Sagan's beautiful prose.
I would also strongly reccomend to read other books by Madame Sagan.
The inevitability of the outcome makes the tender moments enjoyed by the couple all the more precious.
A thoroughly enjoyable read which prompts the question of "How much of an individual dare we be?".

The text for this outstanding book is printed in French, English, and German so you can choose whichever language is the easiest for you. I found the French versions to be the most engaging. The texts are quite brief to allow more room for the amazing photographs!
As someone who loves gardens and often visits France, I was impressed by how many gardens I had missed. Well, no longer! My next visit will be quite different as a result of encountering this beautiful catalogue of gorgeous greenery.
Naturally, you have seen Versailles and Giverny. But have you been to the Chateau d'Apremont, Chateau d'Hautefort, and Vaux-le-Vicomte?
The French have long excelled at formal gardens, and you surely know Le Notre's work (lovingly displayed here). But you will also see many modern and informal gardens, as well. In fact, you will encounter humble, noble, ancient, and abstract gardens among others. These are drawn from a cross-section of France so you get the benefit of seeing what the different growing conditions permit. On the Riviera, you will see cacti while dense shrubbery in intricate designs are featured in the northern gardens.
The continuity of this book is in capturing each garden at its absolute best color. Some of these gardens may only look this wonderful for five minutes, but von Schaewen succeeded in capturing those right five minutes.
With over 40 gardens to examine, you will surely find some that match your tastes and mood.
After you have finished examining these remarkable oases of human sensibility, I suggest that you begin inquiring about great gardens near where you live which you have never seen. Then inquire as to when is the best time to visit. Chances are, if you are like me, you have been missing great gardens not only in France, but everywhere you go.
Stop and smell the roses!

But what did people eat for breakfast? How widespread was corn or oats? What other kinds of grains were used? What were sub-regional specialties? How much was wine thinned with water? How long could a wine last in those days before it went bad? How often did people get food poisoning?
For what this book was written for, it's an excellent one. For a writer, it's a very good starting point.
All they served was alcohol to drink. Neither my husband nor I drink, so we went dry the whole night. There were a few others like us. Then almost all of the dishes were made with alcohol. And I mean SOAKED in it. Not the kind of meals where most of the alcohol was cooked off. Then the main dish was a skimpy serving of oysters. Needless to say, our palates were not satiated.
Those fools really could have used this book. There are tons of MEAT recipes from chicken to hare. There are numerous soups that aren't made with beer. There are desserts besides rim soaked cake. Lo and behold, there is even almond milk for the non-alcoholic.
The front of the book has some menu suggestions and the back is great for the historian. There is a fair sized section with the recipes in the original language. It's fun to pick through the old wording.
This truly is a wonderful book and the recipes taste great. A must have for anyone who wants to put together a REAL medieval dinner.
One of the spice blends that they give has become a staple in my kitchen, the "Sweet spices for many good and fine foods", which I love to use on salmon before cooking. I did make one change (which the authors note many sources recommending) to season "to the taste of the lord" (that's me) -- I changed the bay leaf to dried orange peel. Try it.
Another recipe I will definitely make again is the Asparagus with Saffron.
My one quibble is that the recipes are almost exclusively French or Italian, with very few from England, and none from any other culture. But, since the authors themselves hail from the first two countries, this is perhaps understandable.
To really understand the incredible drawings, also purchase the newly released video "The Book of Kells - The Work of Angels?" which tells what the illustrations were about and how they were created... many of the designs date from the Celtic gold work that was done at the time, and there are many interesting stories about life in the abbey, political intrigues, and other goings-on during this period of time.
This has been a favorite gift of mine to give to many people, who have seen the book in person in Ireland, but never really knew what it meant, until they saw the tape. The two go hand-in-hand together, and are worth any price.
There is also a new CD out with Kells images as well, which may well be worth purchasing ...
The original 1974 large edition book in a fabric slip case is the one I saved up all year for when I was a very poor college student, and started my life-long love of calligraphy.
This book is well worth any price, when Inspiration is your need or your calling.
