The best book for org change & reengineering projects
This second edition is a minor update to the original that was published in 1994. When the first edition was published business process reengineering was in vogue. Today we're still doing reengineering, but it goes by the moniker of "organizational change management". A rose by any other name; however, this book remains one of the only project management texts that stays focused on reengineering and organizational change projects while including traditional project planning, scheduling and control techniques.

What makes this book unique is the way the author tackles organizational politics head on, and the sage advice given to deal with it. These comprise the main theme of Part I's first three chapters, which address the business environment, how to bring order out of chaos and engaging change. The final two chapters in Part I cover risk management and customer satisfaction - two main critical success factors for any project, but are especially important in organizational change projects.

Part II starts with a chapter that is boldly titled "Acquiring Political Skills and Building Influence" and segues into another topic that most PM books sidestep: "Building Teams with Borrowed Resources". If you've ever attempted employing matrix management or virtual teams you'll appreciate the advice given in this chapter. The author also gives an excellent discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of self directed teams, which may be ideal in theory, but are not easy to achieve in practice. Chapter 8 in this part is a well written piece on project selection techniques, which reflects the author's approach that is better documented in a book that he coauthored titled "The Project Office".

The remainder of the book is focused on traditional PM techniques, including estimating, outsourcing considerations, earned value (now part of the PMI PMBOK), and project metrics.

If you are involved in organizational change projects this book is the best resource because of the way it combines organizational change management with traditional PM techniques.

Highly Recommended
David Frame's new book: PROJECT MANAGEMENT COMPETENCE: BUILDING KEY SKILLS FOR INDIVIDUALS,TEAMS AND ORGANIZATIONS is highly recommended for individuals and organizations interested in the current state of Project Management as well as where the profession is going in the near future.

Dr. Frame provides a professional view of the competencies needed by the professional Project Manager. He does so in clear, unambiguous language that anyone can understand.

I found reading this book very "refreshing" and found the insights it provides very valuable. Unlike much of the literature in the field of Project Management, Dr. Frame's book is written in a style that is devoid of abstract, circuitous jargon.

PM Nation
Project Management Nation is authoritative advice and a working blend of tools, techniques and goals. I have been a PM for many years and this book could only have been compiled with proven experience in the field. Outstandingly, Jason keeps the enterprise well in mind.

His book is a great resource and valuable addition for every PM toolbox...

Clear, Concise and a Pleasure to Read
As a new Project Manager, I set out to obtain a few texts would bring me up to speed quickly on the essentials of Project Management. I ended up purchasing this and three other books on Project Management. This book alone provided the information that the other three together could not. The author's writing style makes reading this book a pleasure and I'm sure I will be using this book again as a reference in the future.

Highly recommended book for the new and already practicing Project Manager.

Words can't express
There are no words I can use to express how helpful this book was to me, I truly am speechless. I felt I knew nothing about this subject before this book came out and feel now that this is a valid statement. If books broaded your horizons and allows you to fly, this book could possibly do that for you.

Discussess only a few topics in project management
You are bound to be disappointed if you want to learn how to manage projects from this book.

This book is a very introductory and basic book that describes project management and projects, and then delves into aspects that the author considers interesting. It can best be described as an elementary introduction to the field.

I liked the "Fast Forward MBA in Project Management" much more than this book. It gives one a set of tools and a process for managing projects.

Useful for financial systems projects
This book is very helpful to knowledge workers. It is now translated into Chinese and doing well in China -- the first printing sold out quickly. It is friendly written and interesting. It concentrates on real issues on projects. These are not techniques, but people issues. Frame has good technique book called New Project Management. Managing Projects in Organizations has many examples that are realistic and apply in all industries and cultures. I find it especially useful for practioners in the financial and information technology sectors.

Highly readable and on point
This book is a refreshing look at what is most important in achieving project success: people functioning in organizations. While it reviews key tools and techniques in a user-friendly fashion, its chief goal is to raise readers' awareness of the central role of people and organizations in delivering successful projects. What's more, it is an easy read, filled with practical examples of real world scenarios. It is particularly useful for knowledge workers in businesses like IT, finance, telecoms, R&D and training because it does not get bogged down in painfully detailed treatment of techniques that are marginally useful on real-world projects.

Beginners Only
This book is very basic. Those with any training, experience, or knowledge of Project Offices will not increase their knowledge here. For beginners, it is a good introduction chapter to allow you to know what you don't know and seek greater detail elsewhere.

Terrific Introduction and Great Value
This book is a terrific value for the money and provides a good introduction to PMOs. Although the book is small, it provides the basic components and steps for setting up a PMO. It's a great read for the busy individual who wants to get started. I frequently use the book as a reference.

Good value, quick overview
This book is a good introduction to a hot topic -- the project office. It is not academic, but focuses on defining what project offices are, what value they have, and what you should focus on if you want to develop one. Its short length (under 100 pages) and low price (about ten bucks) is a real asset. In my organization we view it as a bible and checklist to see what we can hope to accomplish through our project office. It is also useful as a sales tool to convince senior managers who don't know anything about project management that the project office has value.
