Invertebrate Zoology
Published in Hardcover by HBJ College & School Division (2003)
Authors: Edward E. Ruppert, Richard S. Fox, and Robert D. Barnes
Amazon base price: $104.95
Average review score:

The ""Bible" of Invertebrate Zoology
A modern replacement of Libby Hyman's classic series, but, even so, is now beoming out of date because of the rapid advances in molecular biology. Dr. Barnes is deceased and I understand that Dr. Ruppert has no plans to update the book, a horrendous undertaking. Nevertheless, I know of no substitute for this fine text. Readers should also refer to Margulis & Schwartz "Five Kingdoms".

Sets the standard for Invertebrate Zoology texts
Ruppert and Barnes' text, now in its 6th edition sets the standard for invertebrate zoology texts. The authors provide adequate depth for undergraduate courses in invertebrate zoology, and good fodder for graduate students starting in the discipline as well.

There are outstanding collections of line drawings in the text -- a method of illustration I prefer to photographs for most instructional purposes.

There is good coverage of invertebrate animal groups, but, since it's published in 1994, there are a few places where the book is becoming dated. There is, for example, no information about the Cycliophora, the latest invertebrate phyla to be proposed.

I hope that there will continue to be new editions of this text produced. I cut my teeth on the 3rd edition, and other editions have figured prominently as I have worked through my graduate and professional careers.

Top-notch material. If you are considering which text to select for an invertebrate zoology course, I urge you to give this book a look.

"quite simply the best book on invertebrate zoology"
This book covers all the major taxa of invertebrate fauna and is surprisingly comprehensive for such a diverse topic.

Manual of Prayers - A truly wonderful book
After purchasing the Manual of Prayers, I found my prayer life had greatly improved. I have been greatly blessed by it. It comes leather bound in 2 colors, black and burgundy. It was such a blessing fort me that I had to get one for a friend. It is good for those who have a hard time praying. It makes it easier to start a prayer or gives one ideas on how to pray. It is a wonderful book that is nothing short of priceless.

A needed prayer book for priests and all Catholics
As a priest recently returned from Rome after two years of graduate study at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum), who lived and prayed at the Pontifical North American College Casa Santa Maria, I can recommend no finer book of prayers for priests and lay Catholics.

Prayer is essential in the life of every person. Catholics have read the Scriptures, worshipped God in the sacrifice of the Mass, prayed the Rosary and the Stations of the Cross, used the psalms to pray and sing, and have used many other prayer forms for nearly 2000 years. Prayer is essential!

The Manual of Prayers continues this tradition. The need to bring forth from our storehouse the greatest of Catholic treasures combines with the need to compose beautiful prayers suited for today. The depth and scope of its scholarship, its fidelity to the faith, and the beauty of its prayers fill the need today for a prayer book in the Catholic tradition. Beautifully presented, made to last, portable and complete, the Manual of Prayers is one to treasure and use every day of one's life.

The most wonderful and complete prayer book ever!
My priest introduced me to this prayer book. As a cradle catholic of 40 plus years I am truly blessed to own a copy. It contains basic Catholic prayers, novenas, prayers for various needs and also has the Latin form of prayers. It is beautifully bound in black leather, gilded page edges, 2 ribbon markers, and a handy case to keep it in. It is truly heirloom quality. Will make a great gift for cradle catholics as well as converts. Originally written for the students of the Pontifical North American College. A must have for all Catholics.

Another "must read" for students of riverine warfare.
Robert C. Powers has established himself as the ultimate authority on Viet Nam riverine warfare, a dimension of the Southeast Asia war that's not been documented very completely. THE MUD FOX picks-up where QUESTER leaves off....and it's another page turner. I read this book in a single sitting on a cross country flight....it's action packed, engaging and tough to put down once you begin. Powers writes with the clear authority of one who's been there as he describes Viet Nam and its maze of rivers and canals. We meet again the main characters from QUESTER as well as some intriguing new ones in this work. The combat scenes are vivid and realistic and there's enough factual detail to keep this book believable and historically accurate. THE MUD FOX is a winner and I recommend it highly!

Even better than QUESTER--can't wait for the movie
I read Powers' last novel, QUESTER, and thoroughly enjoyed the factual description of the Vietnam river war. MUD FOX is even better! It reads like a Tom Clancy novel in its descriptive style. The difference for me was I understood ALL of what Powers was describing since I was one of those reckless souls who patrolled the Vietnam rivers on Swift Boats with just as reckless and dedicated crew members. The book is fast paced and takes some really unexpected turns--never a dull moment. I started my read and couldn't put MUD FOX down until I had finished it. The characters and the locales are really believable. I thought QUESTER was great, MUD FOX is even better! If you haven't had the hair on the back of your neck stand out straight lately, give this book a try'you'll like it a lot! Highly recommended. Can't wait for the movie.

An action packed page turner with a great love story!
"THE MUD FOX, Ghost of the Jungle" is the sequel to "QUESTER, A Story of the River Warriors". QUESTER is a top notch romantic action novel. THE MUD FOX is as good or better! It is based on real operations (OPERATION SEA FLOAT) and events in the Nam Cam Forest during the Vietnam war. The Mud Fox is a different, spellbinding character. As you read, you become the Mud Fox as he fights his way through the jungle and pursues his love. The romance between the Mud Fox and Brenda McAllister is rough, emotional and tender at the same time. Descriptions of the mangrove jungle will have you swatting at the bugs as you read! The action scenes are realistic, dramatic and frequent. There is never a dull moment. The book starts with a bang and ends with a bigger bang. You'll never forget the haunting, action packed surprise ending! A real page turner!

The Einstein Gold (or God) Age
All the Einstein life is very intersting! For the 20st centuryworld life the 1900-1909 Einstein period is the apex of his scientificcontributions, specially for three papers: those about the Brownian Movement, the Photoelectric Effects and Eletromagnetic Effects when there is a referencial change. All three papers brought to ous news interpretations of those phenomena and revealed the Einstein interpretation capacity of visible and not-visible world. The paper about Photoelectric Effects presented a new quantum views of ligh and material interaction while the Eletromagnetic Effects showed the principles of Special Relativity, a theme that transverse the 20st century and arrive at 21st century without popular technology applications. This book brings a opened, stimulant, and helpful explanations - great lectures - about the principals Einstein ideas. Maybe this book is the first to point closely the life and thinking of a science men.

An extraordinary collection
Readers-

One might question why you might purchase a book such as this. Well the answer is quite simple. Logic. Now when I say logic I don't mean the logic of the words themselves rather the logic that you might read such an impressive work.

Einstien was a genius in his time, a genius yet to be surpassed (in the authority of Science that is). His works are timeless, classic examples of the scientific process and this particular is a well-balanced example.

Written during the years of the 1910s this volume's works depict a dedication to science even through the war in Europe.

A Must Read!

Pain & Other Petty Plots to Keep You in Stitches

Outrageous, irreverent fun!
PAIN AND OTHER PETTY PLOTS TO KEP YOU IN STITCHES is an amazing, visually delicious book. The authors and artist have created a wildly eccentric universe where bizarre is normal. Only with creativity freewheeling at its fastest could these images and stories emerge.

An Unforgettable Journey
In Pain and Other Petty Plots, Alan Clark has created a masterpiece of biological and psychological dysfunction that will leave the reader's relationships with hospitals forever scarred. Through a stunning array of paintings and stories, some written by collaborators, Clark guides the reader on an unforgettable journey through his sly and cruel mythos about a medical facility staff in the service of pain. Surrealistic torment and human folly serve as the foundation for a unique vision that disturbs while it amuses, and ultimately serves as a warning on the limitless possibilities for self-destruction in all of us.

Perfect company for those long waits in doctor's offices or hospital clinics. A must for ER visits.

The Atlas of Human Hair: Microscopic Characteristics is an excellent reference for anyone interested in the comparison of human hair at the microscopic level. It contains photos to aid in somatic origin of hair as well as racial characteritics. It is helpful for those begining in hair identification as well as the more advanced forensic scientist.

A very good book, but beware recent changes in the law.
I used this book to teach a law school course in the Czech Republic. It has an excellent selection of cases from which to teach the major areas of European Union (or European Community depending on your view) law. Get the most recent available supplement (1996 to my knowledge) and realize that there have been recent significant changes in this area of law.

Full-bodied, exciting heroines! All books are great read!
I have enjoyed all of the works by Roberta Latow. Unfortunately, my home was torn apart by a hurricane two years ago, and I lost all my books. One of the losses I really regret are my copies of Ms. Latow's works. Worse, they are out of print and I can't seem to retrieve them. Read them if you have the opportunity! You won't be sorry!

Nice Pictures!
This book may not add a whole lot to the body of knowledge about the great liners, but it is an enjoyable and impressive collection of pictures running from the beginning of the century to the QE2. Some of these pictures I know I have seen before, but many of them were new to me. I thought there were some gaps in the coverage, particularly in the early years of the century, but the coverage evened out somewhat for the post-World War II era. This is not the book for you if you are looking for in-depth coverage: other than a two-page introduction to each of the chapters and captions for the photographs, there is no text. But if you like the coffee-table book format of a large, attractive book filled with compelling pictures, this is will be a good choice. Altogether I found this book a good way to pass a couple of evenings surrounded by images of these beautiful ships.

An extremely high quality book with excellent photographs.
I was extremely impressed by this book. Note that it is largely a picture book, illustrated exclusively with black and white photographs - but what photographs!! When well done, black and white photgraphs are superior to those in color, and the photos in this book are very, very well done and expertly printed on each page.

What text there is (and it is printed in English, German, and French) is intelligent, and the each photo has an informative caption (also in all 3 languages).

The various Dover picture books by William H. Miller are nice, but I'm afraid they can't hold a candle to this book. This is a very high quality, superior book, and I highly recommend it.

Outstanding & Rare Photos
I really enjoyed this book, as it contains a great number of intersting ocean liner photos that I have not seen before. This book has given me many hours of enjoyment looking at the photos.
