Wonderful, as always
I looked for so long for this book. The back cover says "A bright new talent has broken fresh ground in the Regency genre" This was from Romantic Times, in 1988, and they were so right. Christa is a strong young woman and a survivor at all costs, yet never bitter at what life has brought her, sweet, kind and compassionate. Everything Mary Jo Putney writes is fabulous. Her story lines are different from the ususal. I have now read almost all of them, although I am still waiting for "China Bride" to come out in paperback. Found her "Diabolical Baron" at an online auction and I wouldn't part with either books, they are keepers. Hope you can find them, they are worth the effort.

Interesting Premise
You never hear about the tons's mistresses - what were their lives like? How did they become members of the demimonde? This story follows a woman who does. Like most, she became what she became to survive. But now Marianne is pregnant and her protector is going to marry. She has been careful with money, etc... and now sets off to start life in a remote country village as a widow. Will her ruse be discovered? Can she stop the mutual attraction between herself and the "gentleman doctor" Alden Venables? Her sadness is eased by the introduction of kittens and orphaned children the doctor brings around. There is a villain of course - and a nasty one.

Very interesting and flowing story. There is a strange introduction of "angels??" with Dr. Venables and at the end after Marianne has her baby. It didn't make sense with the rest of the story and I found it annoying. Especially since they were introduced so late in the book??? I've read other novels where angels were an integral part of the story and liked it but not here. It still is a good read - ended a bit quick and of course, all is happy and resolved in the end.

Unique and charming.
I found "Fortune's Mistress" to be fresh and innovative, and the writing style literate and smooth. Ms. Comstock has created two memorable characters, and has taken a unique look at the consequences of behavior. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Good basic information and excellent motivation
I read this book in about an hour. I couldn't put it down. I found the Toohey's personal anecdotes to be inspirational.

I particularly liked their advice on parenting and the potential financial downside to having children lacking in discipline, be it self or parental. Their perspective is a nice balance to the current overly permissive parenting models that dominate the child psychology market today.

The book supports those wanting to live simply, desiring and needing less. There are many excellent suggestions of places in a typical family budget to scale back and places to go after more money. For example, the Tooheys provide concrete information on how to fight for money back when a vendor doesn't live up to their end of a bargain. They also provide a suggested reading list to get started on learning about investing for your future, much of it available free on web-sites.

I'd say the book is an excellent place to start for a family looking to reprioritize and get their financial house in order.

Good Investing Section
I am a recently divorced mother of two and didn't have a clue about investing. I read this book because it was written by real people who aren't financial experts. I guess I thought I might be able to understand it and that it would deal with issues I face. I was right. I liked the book and have loaned it to my sister and she likes it too. It's a quick read and it held my attention throughout. Now I'll need to start reading some of the other books recommended in this book. Thank you Tooheys, for sharing your experiences and showing me how it's done.

Helpful Book
I've read a few financial books and this one was very helpful. I also liked Personal Finance for Dummies which I read first, and I noticed that these authors also recommend that book. I liked them both a great deal. This book really is for average people. It deals with things others don't and the investing section clarified some things I didn't quite understand. I really liked the car buying section and plan to use that next time I'm in the market. The record-keeping section is very unique and leaves you wondering why you didn't think of that! A good book.

mediocre book
it is a bit boring at first but towards the middle the book seems more interesting as William grow up. I am not a historian and the numerous names isd really hard to follow!

Really good historical novel
I thought this was one of the best books I've ever read. Good storytelling, exiting plotline and well-developed characters. I would highly recommend it, as I already have recommended it to my mom, sister and aunt.

I read a previous 1992 edition from Headline Books which had a very high number of typographical errors, which annoys me when I'm immersed in the story. Hopefully those circa 50 typos were spotted and corrected for this 1993 edition from another publishing house.
