One of the most unforgettable biographies ever!
This book touched me and changed my whole view of the term 'martyr'. I have since become a great fan of Wurmbrand, his books never fail to stun one into a deep, reverential silence.

An amazing testimony to Christ's presence
No matter your (ir)religious beliefs, you will be astounded by this account of life, endurance, perseverance, faith, and love in the worst possible conditions and suffering. An astounding witness to the strength and love the living Christ imparts, and an indictment of the horror and hollowness of atheism. Not for the faint of heart or closed of mind, and brimming over with insight and depth of thought; especially fascinating are his theological and philosophical conversations with a myriad of colorful characters, from (formerly) powerful politocos and military figures, to "lowly" farmers and thieves.

Saints are human, too.
Mystic. Philosopher. Loving husband. Worried father. Proud member of the Jewish race. Creature with nerve ending that ache when you hit them and who hungers when you starve him. Social being who hallucinates apart from human voices, and hungers for sex and companionship as well as food. Martyr who stands up to tyrants and warns them to repent. Lutheran pastor with a weakness for jokes. Richard Wurmbrand may have been a "voice of the martyrs," but after reading this sensitive, deeply honest autobiography, what impresses me the most is the degree to which his voice is also the voice of humankind. I found it challenging to see how, as a well-read Christian in tough times who faces all the temptations I do, he integrated the various facets of his humanity with his faith.

In a literal sense, faith made Wurmbrand a free-thinker. Embracing a religion that fits the full complexity of life, miracles as well as madness, and sharing a broad and often painful experience with a knowledge of several spiritual traditions, he was free to think on many questions and come to unexpected conclusions both whimsical and sober. There are many modern names that could be added to the list of heroes of the faith of Hebrews 11. Wurmbrand tells us some of their stories, including his own.

MY FATHER FINALLY TOLD HIS STORY....
My father served in Co G, 104th Regiment 26th Infantry - a sister company to the author's. He refused to talk about the war. When he passed away in 1990, I found his short written memoirs penned during recuperation from wounds suffered in Germany while in an English hospital. Reading this book alongside his memoirs was an incredible experience for me. It filled in many blanks by being much more complete - yet was absolutely true in time, place, and tone with my father's notes. It was like he came back and finally decided to tell me his stories. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Thank you
My dad was in M, Co. 104th Rgt. same as author. I lost him on Memorial Day 1969 before he ever had a chance to discuss his experiences as I was only 20. I have been searching for people who were there, and in finding this book, it showed me very clearly how proud I am of him. Thank you Richard for sharing this with all of us.

On Target
A marvelous account that takes a different approach to telling the infantryman's story. It is World War II Europe through the eyes of a naïve, young soldier who has little control over his environment but accepts - largely through faith - that everything will work out. Courtney doesn't focus on tactics or battle actions but rather on the relentless grind of bad weather, bad food, and constant danger. He does a first rate job of showing the lighter side of combat - Bill Mauldin in words. He takes the reader on a roller coaster adventure with the 26th Infantry Division traveling across war-torn Europe all the way to Czechoslovakia and Austria. Particularly interesting were the poignant accounts of post-war forced repatriation of Russians, Hungarians, and other eastern Europeans - a dark chapter of World War II which isn't well known. A great read clearly showing the sacrifice that Courtney's generation endured for their society and their buddies. It made me question whether we could duplicate their sacrifice today.

Example codes have too many errors
I wonder if the authors have actually compiled and run the codes. It simply won't work. Take Chapter 20 (RMI) as an example: 1. In class StockMarket, the line Quote q = (Quote)Naming.lookup("HelloServer"); should be Quote q = (Quote)Naming.lookup("///QuoteServer");

2. Class StockMarket should belong to package examples.ch20.bean, not package examples.chap20.bean;

Very intense yet easy to understand and use.
Here is a book that is designed to allow the reader to begin immediately programming JavaBeans. The combination of examples and source code in the text, as well as the accompanying CD allow the reader to develop sophisticated JavaBean applications quickly and easily. This book does an excellent job of explaining design concepts, methodologies, and uses for JavaBeans, as well as providing useful and appropriate tips and ideas for applications. The book explains the relationship of JavaBeans to different component Architectures, and problems associated possibly encountered within these environments. Some basic programming skills are required to adequately use this book, so it should be considered for an intermediate to advanced user level.
