An Engrossing, Well-Researched Biography
Think of Tony Fletcher's Moon: The Life And Death Of A Rock Legend as the serious, analytical counterpoint to Dougal Butler's comic, anecdotal Full Moon: The Amazing Rock & Roll Life Of Keith Moon. Butler simply wanted to tell a bunch of funny stories about his former employer; Fletcher covers this ground, too, but primarily wants to make a case for Keith Moon as Great Artist. Partly because of this approach, it's probably the better book.

Keith Moon seems to be suffering from Jimi Hendrix Syndrome these days: that is to say, there seems to be this notion running around that he was merely some sort of drug-crazed lunatic making a lot of racket on his chosen instrument. The truth of the matter is that Keith was a musician of extraordinary intelligence and attentiveness. One of the things I like best about Fletcher is his ability to hear what was going on in Moonie's playing and to explain it in a way that the ordinary reader can understand.

Fletcher's not always the greatest prose stylist, and has a tendency to get a bit fannish and/or maudlin at times, but on the whole he's written a thoughful, engaging biography of this outstanding musician. I hope that both fans and nay-sayers will take the time to check it out.

Every WHO & Moon fan must have this book
After reading "Full Moon" By Peter "Dougal" Butler, I thought any other book written about Keith Moon would be a rerun of previous published material. I was wrong thinking that!! Tony Fletcher has written a incredible account of Keith Moon's private and public life. Alot more detail into the life of Keith is presented here. I found the book describing in detail the stories that were only mentioned in other books. I felt like I know Keith better after reading this book. I laughed, sighed and even cried for Keith. The pain & loneliness Keith had in his life is described in great detail. The stories come from Keith's family, friends, and business associates. Reading how Keith's family the other WHO members dealt with Keith's death, and seeing how the years after his death effected them was most interesting.Their comments answered alot of my questions I've often thought about. This book answered alot of questions I had about Keith, and his life. I highly recommend it. It will open your eyes as to what it's like to live a rock stars life. And when you finish this book, you'll have a better understanding as to what is really important in one's life.

This "Moon" Casts A Riveting Glow
The Who's notorious drummer Keith Moon helped create the archetypal image of the anarchic rock star, modulating from likable prankster and good-time Charlie to philanderer, wife beater and perpetually zonked bad boy before his death in 1978 from a drug overdose.

In the skilled hands of British-born music journalist Tony Fletcher, the richly anecdotal Moon is a terrific read. Absorbing, too, is the detailed treatment of the social and cultural scene in 1960s and '70s London.

The author treats his subject reverentially, sometimes dismissing Moon's destructive, manipulative and often thuggish behavior -- he broke his wife's nose three times -- in favor of extended passages analyzing his talent, which Fletcher calls "unique yet impenetrable."

Fletcher interviewed over 100 people in researching the book. A slight flaw, the testimony of outspoken bandmates Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, two indispensable voices, is mysteriously missing.

This recount of Moon's rise and fall casts a riveting glow.

Just like what a band biography should be...
I've only recently become a fan of REM and I picked up this book to read about the band's origins and early history. Fletcher did a great job with describing the early music scene in Georgia and detailing the birth of REM. He never asked you to learn too many details and tidbits about the comprehensive world of music and never went too deep into the motivations of the songwriting. But the band does give input here and there and the rise and success of the band is very well-documented. I'd like to read Fletcher's take on the 2nd decade of REM. He did that good of a job in this book.

Objective views from an obsessive?
This was my first REM book and I read it with a vengeance. Back when Automatic had only just come out, I had only just completed my REM music collection and was absolutely into them. At that time they were basically the only group I was into but all I knew was what I could gather from the songs and from those clippings in 'Best Of'. I soon knew every line of those clippings and decided to sought out the book they came from. BANG. I was hooked - completely - every line, every page I wanted to read so much. Packed with information I took up like a sponge with water - I seriously couldn't put in down.

The book is written in short paragraphs wildly spaced over glossy pages, with some great photos and an useful comprehensive list of the standard releases. It's very easy to read - the short paragraphs keeping you interested chapter after chapter. The book's ideal as a starter for REM information and for people who have a more casual interest, rather than heavier, more indepth books such as 'It crawled From The South'. The faults lie in its generalisations and the way it plays up to the fans, giving us what we want - "hey this book's wonderful - it says REM are great". Its so easy for music books to do that and REMarks is no exception. Sometimes Fletcher does sound artificial, but then again, I still read it over and over.

FANTASTIC!
Being an REM fan for over a decade, this was the first book of their's that I had ever purchased... this book is chock full of information about the band, and it has some great pictures! If you are into the history of REM... this is a MUST!

A good overview
Fletcher's Remarks is the first, and sadly, one of the only R.E.M. biographies around. Although sparse in information compared to Marcus Gray's It Crawled From The South, the book accomplishes Fletcher's aim of presenting a straight ahead biography. There's a second edition that goes up to 1993, but both editions are still basic biographical information, well-written, and thankfully without any of the silly asides that mar Jim Greer's similar but much more sucky Behind the Mask.

Interesting read
For those of us interested in what goes on behind the scenes, this is an interesting read about an English fingerprint expert and some of the crimes he investigated. The crimes are mostly murder, but also include robbery, rape and kidnapping.

The book includes plenty of human interest as well as technical details.
