The Shaman's Bulldog
Dear Readers,

I must say that this is one of the most outstanding books that I have read in a long time. In a most complicated world that we all live in today it was so nice to read about the simple things that make us what we really are.

Thankyou Renaldo and thankyou Mr Faccio Bello for showing us the way to your heart.

True to form - a very meaningful tribute
As a bulldog owner I found this book to be not only deeply touching, but very authentic as well. It highlights the animal's personality traits and loving nature. The Shaman Bulldog is a glorious story of how an animal can heal you and bring you face to face with the depths of love within you. It's a glorious tribute to not just the Bulldog, but all animals that give us the gift of their companionship. How few of us deserve them.

Authentic, loving, and a wonderful read.
This is one of the most endearing books I have read in a very long time. Not just a book for bulldog owners, it is for anyone who has loved, lost and loved again. I couldn't put it down.

Motivates kids to grab a pencil
The Exciting Adventures Of Hydra & Muste Otter: Life In The Big Sea by George J. Kingston is a wondrous, full-color activities enhanced storybook for young readers, about two otter friends and their day-to-day life. Filled with gorgeous photography and educational information about sea creatures, the food chain, and how mammals can survive in the cold and sometimes harsh waters, The Exciting Adventures Of Hydra & Muste Otter is as informationally enriching as it is fascinatingly entertaining. A highly recommended, consumable "Activity Section", provides puzzles for kids, and motivates them to grab a pencil. Rounding out this truly exceptional book, is a simple glossary to help expand the vocabularies of inquisitive young minds.

A beautiful and great educational tool!
If you want your child to have fun learning about sea animals then this is a must read. The book has beautiful photographs and fun drawings. The name of each character has roots in animal classification (which I thought was a very clever learning tool) and the story conveys important facts about the animal life contained within.

The story was fun and educational. These animal adventurers are sure to be off on another adventure soon based on the ending. The only weakenss I found was that the book was a bit anthropomorphic for me but kids will love it. As an animal professional, the specific parts I had trouble with were the humans (biologists) feeding the otters in the wild (not a good idea) and the part where the otters ride the orca on his back (transient orcas eat mammals).

The big plus of this book, beyond the breath taking photos, is that the author included clever learning aids in the activity section. If you are an educator or homeschooler you will love it! Inside is a hidden word challenge, a word scramble, a crossword puzzle, questions, a memory game, a sleuth activity, a glossary and classification section and more. Don't worry, an answer key is included!

An important anthology
This book, compiled by one of the greatest lieder performers of our time, is an extensive anthology of lieder texts from mid-18th century (Haydn, Gluck) to the first half of the 20th (Shoeck, Hindemith), with the vast majority placed in the heart of Fisher-Dieskau expertise - the romantic lieder: over 150 of Schubert's songs, most of Schumann's, and then Loewe, Cornelius, Brahms and many more. Important cycles by Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Wolff, Mahler etc. are given in their entirety. The translation, even though it does not preserve the rhyme, does preserve the line structure and serves its purpose to the fullest. English texts (W. Scott, W. Shakespeare etc.) used by composers in their German translation, are "back-translated" to English, rather than presented in their original form. The texts are alphabetically organised, and in addition to the poet's (or translator's) name, the names of (in most cases) all composers who wrote music to the text are given. There are 3 useful indices - one by author, one by composer and one general index. In the interesting introduction to the book, Fischer-Dieskau briefly sketches the history of the artistic song from his own very interesting point of view. And here one has to realise that this is indeed a personal anthology made by a great performer of the German Lied. Most of the texts, with very few exceptions, are originally in German, or used by the composers in their German translation. If the text is not in German, as in the case of Carpani's "In Questa Tomba Oscura", it is there since it is set to music by Beethoven, or Tchaikowski's setting for the Scottish ballad "Edward" is in the book probably just because he used the German translation... This book can not replace much needed books that are not available, such as the entire corpus of Schubert's song texts, in the way that Norton's anthology of English literature can not replace the complete writings of the authors that appear in the collection. The texts are not annotated, something that would be welcome in a more reference-type book. However, for whoever is interested in the German lied, this is an essential and extensive anthology, accompanied by very good translations and very well organised. PS - now someone should come up with a French equivalent...

An indespensible resource for singers, pianists.
offers english (poetic not literal) translations of many german lieder texts neglected in other resources such as "word by word translations of songs and arias." indespensible resource for singers, pianists, and others interested in lieder who do not speak german. includes the greater portion of texts set by Schubert, Wolf, Schumann, etc. also includes texts set by more modern or obscure composers, e.g. Peter Cornelius, Clara Schumann, etc. a book that needed to be written.

No Regrets: Fischer-Spassky

Seirawan Exaggerates A Little
Yasser Seirawan exaggerates Fischer's playing strength at certain moments in this book. For example, after the 11th game, a Sicillian Fischer won, Yasser claims Fischer is ready to take on Kasparov. Although Bobby played well, I don't think he was strong enough to give Kasparov a good fight. The "comeback" was mabye a little late. Seirawan was just caught up in the excitement of Bobby coming back.

A very honest view of the historic rematch!
GM Yasser Seirawan writes an account of the historic rematch between the suddenly appearing Bobby Fischer, and the long-obscured Boris Spassky. I love this book! Seirawan makes no apology for being a fan. He writes with honesty, but with the same child-like excitement that any Fischer fan would feel, from the preparations to the actual match itself. Most impressive to me was how the author did not skirt the issue of Fischer's outrageous remarks, but rather gave an honest assessment: Here is what Bobby said, and here is WHY he might have said it. Seirawan's enthusiam is contagious, and his notes, for the most part, don't shoot straight over the head of the average reader; therefore, being helpful to the chess amateur. I did not buy this book for the analysis of the games, but for the fan's view of the event, and I was not disappointed! Rev. Peter F. Hyatt, New York

This book is an excellent resource for exploring the Magdalen Islands. These little known islands are one of the best kept travel secrets in Canada. The hiking trails, beaches, and biking routes are presented in a clear, attractive manner. It is a great companion with the tourist association's guide to the Magdalen Islands.

Toward Critical/Alternative Forms of Ethnography
This classic work by Marcus and Fischer is still important to an understanding of changing global and local conditions in postmodernity and how we, as ethnographers, might proceed. This text was very helpful in the researching and writing of my ethnography (now a book: Native Americans in the Carolina Borderlands: A Critical Ethnography, Carolinas Press, 2000). I needed help in conceptualizing hybrid cultural forms and found it in Marcus's and Fisher's text. I also found the text useful for helping me think through the popular cultural critique that needed to be articulated from the everyday discourses of my participants. If you are interested in critical ethnography, this is a must read. Anthropologists, Sociologists, and folks in Cultural Studies and Communications will want to have this text in their reference libraries.

Rare but There (Intramdullary SCT)
I read this book from cover to cover. It was writen for the neurosugeon, but with the help of a dictionary and a desire to learn I found out so much about my preoperational problem. My doctor found a Intramedullary Ependymoma at T-6 and I wanted to learn all I could. This book was a great help to me in understanding what I could expect dearing the surgery and after. I let my Doctor see it before the surgury and gave it to him after I was out of surgery and in NICU. The book is first rate with lots of pictures and examples of what these spinal cord tumors look like and how they respond to surgery. As I said it was not an easy book to read, but its very readable for the person who wants to resurch their needs or the needs of a loved one that is facing "Intramedullary Spinal Cord Surgery. Two years ago there was very little information out about this rare tumor group. This was the best book that dealt with just the spinal cord and the tumors that find themselves within. I would highly recommend it to patients and doctors. I think doctors could use this as a teachin tool for their patients and show them what they are facing. After giving my copy to my neurosurgen I wanted my own copy, because I've wanted to refer back to it so many times. It's expensive, but relize who it was writen for. Its more like a medical text book. I'm glad I read it and glad I have it in my library.

The Shaman's Bulldog
If you love English Bulldogs and believe that they are superiorly intellegent along with being emotionally in touch with their owners, then this book is a must read for you. I laughed at the funny capers of Faccia Bello that reminded me of my own bulldog. It also made myself and my bulldog's "daddy" cry at the emotionally compelling story of love and the reality of the loss of a dear companion and friend.

My entire perspective on dogs has been altered.
I cannot look into my dog's face the same way anymore-I can't watch her sleep the same way-my entire perspective on dogs has been altered. I cried from Chapter 3 to the last page.

Carlos Castaneda meets Lassie.
This book in in the genre of Carlos Castaneda meets Lassie. Which is a catagory of books not yet written. Wonderful.

Great Egyptian Calligraphy guide
The best available guide to egyptian calligraphy available. Fischer knows his stuff and again the Metropolitan Museum of Art have published a great book. This book is good reference work for both the hardened academic and the dabbling dilletente

A Must For Anyone Interested in Hieroglyphs
Books on Egyptology come and go out of print but a select few manage, for good reason, to stay in print. Henry Fischer's "Ancient Egyptian Calligraphy" has always been in print and for good reason. There are scores of books that tell you how to translate and read Egyptian hieroglyphs but very few offer a practical guide as to how to actually write the symbols. Fischer offers a very practical and easy to follow guide that is so simple that it is genius. A slender volume but a truly invaluable one for anyone who is interested in this area of Egyptology.

A GREAT GUIDE TO PRACTICE YOUR HIEROGLYPHIC CALLIGRAPHY
Once again Dr. H.G. Fischer has produced an outstanding title and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, must be congratulated for issuing it as a wonderful book. If you are beginning your own practice of hieroglyphic writing, this is the best (and the only) guide to obtain a nice and elegant hand-writing. TopTen Title.
