Behind the cameras !
In the past, History used to be very boring: You had to study only the 'great facts' of the 'great kings or presidents' and besides that, to memorize a lot of dates, names and places. And the only valuable documents to study were the called 'official documents'. Fortunately, it changed. Today History and historians discovered another way to do that: We don't have to stay looking only for the 'official documents' anymore ! Today historians could research in different ways; They learned that not only those documents are the important ones but that other things or writings could be exellent objects of study and we won't be obligate to listen only the 'history of kings' anymore ! Among these new objects of study is the cinema with her movies and Marc Ferro is a pionner on studing the cinema as an object or 'document' for the historian's work. There in the book you will learn that the cinema is much more than the explicit things you see on the screen; it's politic, social and mental life and more important, it's History and it also made history ! As a History student (almost an historian), I truly recommend this book for the History or Cinema lovers. You won't see a movie the way you use to see it anymore !

Seen Its Day
Originally translated from the French, in 1973 this title has since ceased to be the definative work that it once was. In the last 30 years a lot has been published on WWI.

However, it still can add material to those interested in a cursory review of the war from the French (Western Front) perspective. Which is also, one of the books great flaws. (Naval and particularly American participation get short shrift, while the Eastern Front fares a little better.)

Badly researched and full of errors; don't bother!
I found this book to be one of the worst I've read about Nicholas II. Blatant errors make it obvious the author didn't do his research, which in turn makes it difficult to take anything "new" he comes up with seriously. All in all, I'd say this book is *extremely* unreliable, and lacks any other special qualities to make it a worthwhile read. There have been any number of reliable, interesting, entertaining biographies of Nicholas II written-- I advise you don't waste your time with this one.

It lost me early
It began with Nicholas II (for a paragraph) then went to his great-great grandfather, then to his great grandfather and then to his grandfather and then to his father. You get all this before they even mention anything about the guy the biography is about! I felt as if i was reading a fiction story - all the discription of each event (like the hunting.) There was no biographical facts - it's all stories.

Lost me on page 27
A rather basic biography. Nothing terribly new. One major problem though. Page 27 says that Nicholas didn't want to marry Alexandra, but his parents wanted him to marry her. From Nicholas' own diaries we know this to be untrue. A (somewhat) redeeming quality is that it's the only book (besides the letters of Nicholas and his mother, Marie) that I have been able to find out anything about the Greek/Turkish conflict in. I need that information for my independent study.
