Surprisingly Revealing Biography of a Very Private Star
This biography is written in the best style of biography. One learns not only about the subject but also about the era in which he lived. Andre Soares has uncovered and debunked many of the myths and legends that surrounded Ramon Novarro's life, career and eventual murder (being Valentino's lover and an art deco sex toy as a murder weapon among them).

Novarro is revealed in a very sympathetic light. The author writes eloquently and shows he has taken the time not only to research facts and present them here in plenty, like Novarro's movies (Ben Hur etc) and co-stars (Garbo, Crawford, Loy, Shearer) but also to understand Novarro himself. As well as is now possible after the passage of the years, he examines and reveals the stresses and pressures of being an international super-star who is also a homosexual in 1920's America.

The book is a fascinating story and a very good read.

A biography worthy of its subject
Beyond Paradise is an interesting and thoroughly researched biography that will help to re-establish Ramon Novarro's reputation as Hollywood's greatest Mexican-born actor. This is a wonderful portrait of a man whose ambitions - personal, professional and artistic - more often than not went unfulfilled. But what Novarro did achieve was remarkable, and Soares' book is, in its own way, just as remarkable. Through interviews, studio archives, Novarro's personal correspondence and other sources, Soares creates a work that gives the reader as clear a picture as we'll probably ever get of Novarro.

Novarro was a multi-talented performer whose career survived the transition from silent films to talking pictures, although Soares does describe the various factors that contributed to the decline in Novarro's film career as the 1930's progressed.

Soares also describes the relationships between Ramon and his relatives (his earnings and investments financed his parents and siblings for decades) as well as his personal relationships. I don't want to give away too many details, but I was surprised that Soares was able to provide such a clear picture of Novarro's life, considering the actor was gay at a time when such information would have destroyed his career and labeled him as a deviant in the eyes of society.

Novarro's life and brutal murder (Soares interviews both of Novarro's killers) make for compelling reading, so this biography will be of great interest to film buffs in general as well as anyone looking for an interesting biography to read.

The Dark Side of Celebrity
Until now, the best-known element of film star Ramon Novarro's life was his gruesome death at the hands of two Hollywood hustlers. However, Andres Soares'meticulously researched new biography resurrects Mr. Novarro from casualty to icon. A matinee idol of the ephermeral silent screen, Mr. Novarro's career is given a persuasive critical appraisal by Mr. Soares who also cracks the socio-political climate of the early days of motion pictures and how the industry came into being. Definitely not a beach-read for those preferring a surface biography of their favorite stars (i.e., "The Brad Pitt Story") this is a must for serious cinema buffs.

The Complete Platero
This translation of Platero and I is the only "complete" translation into English of the Spanish Classic. It is also the most Spanish! This refers to the paperback edition.

The Return to Simplicity
This is a beautiful little book by a Nobel Prize Winner of Literature that is too often neglected, Juan Ramon Jimenez.

Only Jimenez could make the blood of a leach in a stream of water into beautiful imagery. Children read this book as part of their curriculum in Argentina, however, this book can be equally enjoyed and appreciated by adults.

The story is a simple one: it is a first person (semi-autobiographical) account of a poet and his donkey in the mountains of Spain, appreciating, almost Zen-like, the simple beauties of life. The elements, children playing, leaches bleeding in a pool, everything seems beautiful in this book, and the descriptions are exquisite.

This is probably the best introduction to Jimenez, a book not to be missed!

sencillez y belleza

A timely book!
This is a timely book published just before the 40th anniversary of the Bay of Pigs. It's a great way to learn about what really
happened from the first-hand accounts of the Cuban revolutionaries who defeated the US-backed invasion. If you've never read a speech by Fidel Castro, there are a couple of very good ones in this book. You'll not only learn about what happened at the Bay of Pigs, but you'll also learn why the Cuban people smashed this invasion so swiftly and decisively. Another great part of the book is the testimony of Jose Ramon Fernandez who commanded troops in the thick of the fighting. There are maps, charts, all the details
of the battle. But it's not a dry or boring account. He tells what happened from a very human and personal point of view, revealing his own mistakes and weaknesses, and recounting some humorous episodes as well. Finally, the foreword of the book tells a fascinating story of how a group of young people at Carleton College organized support for
the Cuban revolution and against the US invasion and what they learned about politics. I think you'll be surprised as you read the
book about how relevant this forty-year-old event is today.

couldnt put this book down, not even at the beach
first read this book the first day of beach season. Instead of
spending time in the water, I just sat there and read this book until it was too dark to read. This account is an activist account ofthe fight from Cuban and US fighters who see and saw the US invasion and resistance in Cuba and the United States not as history to be deciphered but part of an ongoing struggle against imperialism, against war, and for the power of working people. I never stopped caring; I never stopped seeing what was hidden from me in 1961, I never stopped seeing lessons for the future. A good read. -

Sharing Words: a new way for the social change by education
I don't know anybody who having read Sharing Words doesn't believe that social transformation by education can be a reality. Sharing Words explains the possibility for adult illiterates to partake of literacy to the extent of reading classical literature. In addition, it outlines how it is possible to overcome the main obstacles like gender, race, age, and ethnicity that curtail literacy experiences and social participation. The reader appreciates how the literary circles and their organization become a democratic educative practice which produce a transformation in the learners, as well as in their daily and societal context. The experiences depicted in this book do away with stereotypes that relate to the low expectations of our society from people who lack a university degree. I identified the two elements that are propagated by Freire, the theoretical base of the educative experience and the dreams evoked by it. From deep understanding of theory and practice, Flecha deals with both in a very accurate way.

Before reading this book, I didn't believe that one person coming from illiteracy could read James Joyce. Going through Sharing Words, I have realized that to believe that this is possible is the only way to make it. Definitely: Sharing Words is a revolutionary book, it do to believe that the people make dreams possible by education.

An amazing real utopia!
What most impressed me about this book is how Flecha successfully overcomes the common gap between educational practice and theory. "Sharing words" is about an efficient educational practice which is taking place every week in different places around the world. The secret for the educational practice efficiency is dialogic learning. This innovative way to approach education is convincingly argued for by the author by introducing the powerful intellectual basis - Freire, Habermas, Giddens - which supports it. Flecha not only presents the seven principles of dialogic learning as a theory or as possible outcomes when the theory is applied; he also includes the voices of those who are actually taking part in the practice. This combination of theory and practice is insightful, especially since it is not easily found in the literature. As a result Flecha gives the reader the opportunity to be immersed in the successful learning experience of literacy students reading Kafka, Joyce, Garcia Lorca... an amazing real utopia! The seven principles of dialogic learning are the most exhaustive set of principles to be used to completely overcome all kinds of discrimination and problems that are at the center of the educational debate. All possible bias are taken into account: ageism, sexism, racism, classism... For all these reasons, I strongly feel that "Sharing Words" will be of great interest and of greater reward for all who care about education, believe in social justice and work everyday to make such ideals a reality for all.

A new way of learning
"Sharing Words" is a book to be read if you want to know about an alternative educational method that listens to the voices of those people who are usually descounted. This book demonstrates how any person is able to analyze culture and society on the basis of his/her experience. Knowledge, as it is understood in "Sharing Words", is not only something abstrct with an academic degree; knowledges also comes from life experience and has not a concrete age, gender, colour of skin or preferences, this is, all the people are able to learn from their own capabilities and necessities and have the right to decide what and how they want to learn.

An Excellent Book
The Apprentice is a wonderful and breath-taking book. Arduino wanted to be an artist and not a tailor. His father granted his wish and sent him to be an apprentice to Cosimo di Forli, a famous artist. But one night, Arduino found out a terrible crime that his master had committed and what he was hiding in his attic. Would Arduino give up his dream of being an artist and reveal the terrible secret? Read and you will find out.

I am surprised that this book only has two reviews so far. It deserves many more.

Good literature for young readers
Pilar Molina Llorente is an explendid writer. She describes the atmosphere of Florence in a detailed and enthusiastic fashion that brings the story to life. The author creates credible and consistent characters. Is a very appealing story for both kids and young readers. An attractive and dynamic book.

A well-written Renaissance story.
The Apprentice is a truly wonderful, well-written book. The story is about a boy in Renaissance Italy who decides to quit his family buisness and become a painter. He goes through many ordeals and mistreatments as an apprentice, and has an unjust master. There is also a mysterious attic that the other apprentices say noises have come from, and cannot be discussed in front of the master. If you like historical fiction and books about freedom, this book is for you.

Reprint this book
Why don't you reprint this book. We want to be able to buy it. I love Living On the Earth and have shared a lot of time with the author through reliving the life she wrote about. Give this book the same opportunity to be savored.

forgotten classic
This was liberated for me by a friend from a school library, and is one of the best books I've ever read about a nature-based lifestyle. The recipe for bread baked by the sun is good, and the drawings of people pooping are too. You can read the index as a free form poem.

a bohemian's bible
i got this book at a second hand shop and then the same day bought the first one 'living on the earth' , its charming the pages are written in hand text, leaving super amounts of fun to be had within these pages, like a colouringbook for your brain...It also doubles as a colouring book... Talks of digesting food taking thanks for the food... sun songs, your soul mate, meditations, altars, yoga, healing, every budding bohemian should get this book

Cooking for cowboys
Ramon Adams has an encyclopedic knowledge of the social life of cowboys on the range. In this one of his many books, he describes the role of the chuck wagon cook on the cattle drives and roundups. Adams is a great collector of amusing stories and colorful cowboy slang. If he knows one word for something, he probably knows half a dozen.

The book provides a detailed description of the chuck wagon itself, how it's constructed and its contents organized, how it's cleaned and maintained, who has responsibilities for what. The chuck wagon was both the nerve center and social center of a trail outfit. Besides getting three meals a day, the cowboys also laid out their bedrolls nearby, and the wrangler's remuda of horses was close at hand. In many cases, the cowboys' bedrolls made the trip to the next night's camp in the back of the chuck wagon.

Of most interest to this reader was the actual fare, typically fried meat, beans cooked for many hours, and sourdough biscuits made in Dutch ovens, all washed down with strong coffee. Depending on the talent and disposition of the cook there were also treats and "sweets," such as pies made from dried apples. An outfit depended for morale and productivity on a cook who kept the men well fed and happy. This gave a well-liked cook a tremendous amount of leverage in the all-male hierarchy of tough cowboys. A man who complained about the chuck or didn't respect the cook's camp rules would soon be sorry.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and while I've read extensively about the cowboy West, it taught me a lot I didn't know, and in a very entertaining way. It belongs on anyone's "Lonesome Dove" bookshelf.

Well Written
For anyone unfamiliar with the Ol' time cattle drives, this book does a wonderful job enlightening from the point of view of the Ol' Cowboy Cook. I recommend this title to any reader interested in cattle drives

Excellent "flavor" of the West!
This book is highly recommended for those who follow the arcane art of chuckwagon cooking. Adams displays an excellent, first-hand grasp of the subject and writes with wit and style. Buy it now!

Wonderful resource
Tons of examples! It's a nice mix between theory and applications, citing scenarios from all industries. Not only do they show you the code, they also produce the output and go through it section by section.

Examples, Examples, Examples
This references goes beyond the SAS Reference Manual (V.8) for mixed models. This is an applied statistics book, but theory is given in an end chapter. Basic and advanced topics are presented, and although introductory sections are provided...the book is written at a graduate-level and previous experience with analysis of variance is a desirable prerequisite. Topics covered include common mixed models, analysis of repeated measures data, random effects models, analysis of covariance, random coefficient models, heterogeneous variance models, spatial variability, generalized linear mixed models, and nonlinear mixed models. Two to six examples are discussed in detail for each of these cases. If you're trying to figure out a split-plot analysis with random effects and a complicated covariance structure...i.e. messy data...this book will do for you in two hours, what a week of reading the standard SAS manuals would have done. Also, if you primarily work with mixed models, this book is a lot cheaper than the standard SAS manuals, and tells you more about mixed models.

Excellent examples and explainations. If you need to understand or utilized Proc Mixed, this is an excellent reference.

Excellent Book, poor translation job
Santiago Ramon y Cajal was a genius of his time, this books is an excellent description of himself and his research methods, but it is unbelievable that the translators decide NOT TO INCLUDE SOME CHAPTERS of the original! Anyone who can read Spanish should avoid this translation and go for the original

A Nobel laureate reveals the secrets...
There are really no secrets...Ramon y Cajal warns us against several diseases of the will which affect research. He does that with great candour and much charm. I felt myself included in the category of "bibliophiles and polyglots", who collect more books and learn more languages than they could possibly use. Not that I changed: I just added guilt to my innocent vices! It adds to the charm that this book was written in the beginning of the 20th century when, well, wisdom was different. I wonder how the great scientist would react to the success of Marie Curie, Rita Levi-Montalcini, Lise Meitner, Countess Ada Lovelace (whom he could have met) and many other great women of science.

Raises Self Esteem in scientists
Ramon y Cajal was a wonderful scientist. As this book shows he was also a magnificent teacher as well. The advice he gives about how to pursue research are as true today as they were in his days. Every graduate student should read it and take his advice...except about what he has to say about women in chapter 6.

A Good Christmas Gift For Relatives
I bought this book for myself. It's a true treasure trove of visual treats. Have you wanted to know how the homes of the rich and/or famous in the Philippines look? The variety of materials available for buidling and furnishing homes in the Philippines is astounding--rich woods, a wide spectrum of fabric, ethnic carvings and woven work. Linger over the detailed photographs in this book! Now I know what to get for my sisters and in-laws for Christmas!

Eye Opener
This book is a great book for young Filipino Americans who need some inspiration. As a Filipino American growing up in USA, I never really felt any connection with the Philippines. I was brought up by knowing only the stereotypes that sometimes make a Filipino American want to shy with embarrassment. Stereotypes are everywhere within any culture. By reading this book and flipping through the pages, I saw that Philippines is a beautiful place. Everyone needs take a look at this book. It's a great eye opener for Filipino Americans who have problems accepting their own skin.

Excellent Book for Filipino Traditional Interior Design.
Finally, a book on Traditional and Contemporary Philippine Interior Design by a reputable author/photographer. It will give the reader a good sense of Native Interiors to Traditional influences of Spanish-Colonial Interior Design and Architecture. Very superb photographs. Beautiful renderrings in the Furniture Dictionary.
