Practical, readable, profound
Karen Johnson was my psychiatrist for a number of years, beginning just as this book was coming out. She walks the walk as well as she talks the talk in this book. She treats patients like responsible adults, not helpless children; and she believes that people who have "emotional problems" can discover from within the ways to solve the problems. This book is extraordinary in that is is very simply written, with a minimum of medical jargon and no intellectual superiority at all; and the material is presented very directly. It's almost an istruction book on how to create yourself emotionally healthy again. I think a revised version is due; lots of research has come out since 1991.

Wow!! A Book by a Woman, about Women
This wonderful text really describes the unhappiness so many women feel. The good news is, that most of our feelings have more to do with the way we learned to cope within a society or environment that is not geared to serving our needs, rather than due to some personal flaw of ours. This book may also help us to wean off the awful habit of collecting too many self-help books, because it encourages trust in our inner wisdom. As a woman who has made it a personal project to enlighten women who are suffering in 12-step based substance abuse programs, because such programs often reinforce our self-doubt, this text is a fantastic part of the solution!!! Imagine trusting ourselves once and for all, instead of the systems, programs, doctors, mates, etc. that we had more faith in than in ourselves! Thank you Karen Johnson, for this very liberating work!

A Wonderful Resource for Women and Those Who Care for Them
The approach to psychological care for women, is where Johnson and Ferguson diverge from much of the past literature. Like me, they know a woman's experience is different from a man's by virtue of their differing genders. Women's concerns are not dismissed, discounted, trivialized, marginalized, or described/interpreted from an exclusively male perspective. The authors acknowledge and affirm that many women understand why they are not happy with their lives. They recommend this as a valid starting point for the work a client and therapist do together.

Intelligent, Hillarious and long Overdue!!!!
Highly relevant to today's political situation, it directly referrs to characters we are forced to endure and listen to in Congress, the evening news, and religious programs.

Some of my favorites?...Assholius Trentlottius (p.23), The Weeping Goddwit- "Assholius Religious" (p.19) and the Starr-Eyed Smirker- "Assholier Thanthousis" (p.69)

If you need a good laugh, you will deffinately find it here. I am surprised this one isn't a National Bestsleller! Has America lost its sense of humor or are we getting sensitive?

My last piece of advice: The Politically Correct crowd should deffinately avoid this one!

this is a soul cleaner=)
this book IS the second book i turn to when i am in need of advice. the 1st ofcourse is the bible. he seems to be an amazing man. After you read the book your outlook changes. p.s. it is not a book you can read chapter after chapter. if something is bothering you , the pages just come and the word speak to your soul. PEACE.

Well-written and easy-read health and fitness book
I bought this book unseen after having read Brad Appleton's online book on stretching called "stretching and flexibility". Appleton highly recommends it. I understand why!!!!!!!!!! It combines every-day health topics like stress, motivation etc. in a (often but not always) sports-context. The book is though also recommended to people not interested in sports. Cooper has lots of scientific references (also for further reading) so his claims/suggestions/opinions are absolutely not "just personal meanings from somewhere". By my 9 years higher education (university) I must say I have NEVER written book so easy read and still so scientific as this one. It is a MASTERPIECE!!! You can use it as reference book or read from first page till last. I also consider it a whole life book. If you really know this book and takes the consequences of it you will be a better person. To others and yourself. And the price is a joke!!! I could easily have paid... for it!!

excellence of the synergy of health/nutrition/exercise
I have been reading books about health, nutrition, and exercise. This is the first book I have come across that deals in detail with all three topics individually, and also as a synergistic group. Plus all theories presented are published studies. For a complete overview of health, fitness and nutrition, this is a great book.

Face-to-Face Is Not Enough
Between 7:00pm and 1:00am is a good time to get answers to a health care system moving from the traditional office face-to-facing with doctors to self-managed lay medicine online. A good way to surf these Internet health and medical resources is by signing up with a computer network, such as America Online, CompuServe, Delphi, eWorld, Genie, Microsoft Windows 95, Prodigy, The Well, or Women's Wire. Self-helpers can then access such biomedical databases as the HealthNet Reference Library, Information USA/health, and Medline; Internet mailing lists, such as HMATRIX-L's popular and professional resources for laypeople and professionals; the Medical Support Bulletin Board; the Medical Matrix gopher site; the MedWeb free medical library; and USENET newsgroups. Such directories and search engines as InternetSleuth, the Multimedia Medical Reference Library, and the Whole Internet Catalog of Health can find relevant web sites ranging from Good Medicine alternative and mainstream medical practices, to Internet Vet, PharmInfoNet, Traveler's Choice worldwide health conditions, and Yahoo/health.

Or a health information broker---such as The Health Resource Inc., Med Help International, and Plane Tree Health Resource Center---could be hired to do all the footwork. Or a non-digital start would be to call the Self-Help Clearinghouse and to read THE SELF-HELP SOURCEBOOK. This self-help focus by author and physician Tom Ferguson works well with John M. Grohol's THE INSIDER'S GUIDE TO MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES ONLINE. Readers trying to pool as much Internet health and medical information as possible could also look to Bruce Maxwell's HOW TO FIND HEALTH INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET and MOSBY'S MEDICAL SURFARI.

intelligent advice on quitting smoking
this book is dated now. it would be nice if there was an updated version with the advent of patches now in use.
i found some of the statistics very illuminating and provided me with a strategy on quitting smoking which i am attempting to implement. for instance only half of all people who stopped smoking did so cold turkey. the other half had a well thought out plan of gradual cessation. which makes sense to me. we did not become smokers overnight so it's logical that we don't become non-smokers overnight.
there is a useful appendix on the brands of cigarettes and their tar and nicotine level to guide you to weaning you off nicotine if you prefer to attempt to quit that way.
at the price this book sells for it is a good value in my opinion

Best Book
I have accumulated 5 or 6 books on quitting smoking.

Finally (via Zyban) I have been successful - this book was the most useful and helpful of all

The No-Nag, No-Guilt, Do-It-Your-Own Way Guide to Quitting S
This book is an excellent guide for anyone thinking about cutting down or quitting smoking. It was THE most important thing I read before I quit smoking. Haven't had a cigarette since July 3, 1989!

A very useful book for people shamed as children
Imaginary Crimes refers to unconscious motivations such as the fear of doing better than a parent or of being disloyal to a parent which can damage people's lives. Without accepting everything the book says I think it is liberating for people stuck in their lives and a very good guide to finding patterns in one's life. If you have been subjected to guilt, embarrassment or shame in your childhood, I recommend this book, if you can get it

Excellent Read!
This book is a great introduction to Control Mastery Theory. It is easy to read for people who are not familiar with theories in psychoanalysis and also understandable. The book provides many case examples to illustrate ideas and concepts. Excellent book and a must read for anyone interested in learning more about this theory.

Good unusual information
The book is printed on dull paper illustrated with a large number of bw photos, which could be clearer. The first chapters deal with various police weapons and tactics, but the second part of the book covers more interesting and unusual subjects like airport police, horses and beach bikes and a particularly interesting section on volunteer police departments staffed by senior citizens. Printing and reproduction could be better, but actual content fine.
