Must have! Great desk reference!
It is invaluable when writing articles and helping customers.

Keep up the good work !!

When is the next edition coming out?

I think is is accurate and invaluable
I am a professional portait and fine art photographer. I have used the book since it was first published and have found it to be invaluable when writing or explaining some of the value added advantages of digital imaging. P.S. The individual who only read about the book should try reading it. If his attention span is long enough.

Very good book for advanced amature photograpers and up
Very good book not only for top PRO, but for hobby photographers too (with experience of course). Very little of "water" and a lot of valuable information. Recommend for people who want to go DIGITAL in photography. By it now while it almoast up-to-date.

Excellent, well-designed guide for the professional
Highly recommended! For the professional as well as the semi-professional, this beautifully printed guide tells how to adapt and make a living in the new arena of digital imaging. It includes expert, detailed advice on how to work in this new medium, how to market your work electronically, and how to use the internet to your advantage. Good books on digital imaging are hard to find; this one is great!

No follow through.
I expected a lesson in advanced photography. The text was informative, the photographs were not. Many example photographs that were supposed to instruct me in the use of colored gels on flashes or lights were printed in black and white! What a disappointment!

A good book for beginners
This was my first "real" book on photography, and I must say it helped me a lot.
I changed my point of view when I was behind my own camera,
because of the stories Joe and Barry described.

It is easy and fun to read.

nice book, but...
i would have appreciated more than what basically amounts to a beautifully written and presented Nikon sales pitch.

This book seems geared more toward people with extradisposable incomes or professionally funded camera setups, not an avid amateur enthusiasts.

Read if You Know Nothing About Photog/Computers/Business
Reading through this book was very disappointing to me as a beginning photographer. The book does not deliver what is promised on the back cover or introduction. The author glosses over each topic but never actually gives any information that isn't already common knowledge. The computer information is very vague and outdated, the home business chapter spends time on balancing family/photo/part-time wants and not setting up in your home office specific to photography, the model posing and lighting section gives about five pointers that if you haven't already learned them -- you are really only just thinking of being a photographer, finding models has never been a problem so that part and the two "legal" contracts were useless to me. Keep searching there are bound to be more informative books on the subject. The book lacks focus in relation to the title. I feel like I got hooked by the title and didn't learn what I bought the book for.

Not at all useful
The corny cover photo of a swimsuit model in mirrored sunglasses holding a seashell should have warned me to steer clear of this one.

If you're looking for a book to help you take better portraits then you'll find no useful information here. The book is full of large glossy photos, few of which have any artistic merit, and *none* of which contain any technical information whatsoever (no aperture settings, shutter speeds, film types, camera/lens information, lighting configurations, filter selection....nothing.)

Even the business advice is so watered down as to be almost useless. The author's advice on computer equipment and peripherals is already outdated, and the section on running a home office lacks any real information content. Readers with even the most basic business savvy will find themselves rolling their eyes at this chapter. There is nothing here that you didn't already know via common sense.

Both photographers who aspire to improve their work and those who aspire to improve their income will be disappointed. There is no material of value in this book.

A great how too book that is extremely easy to read!!!
After looking at this book for almost a year and the greatrecommendation from .... .... This book was a joy to read and provided enough detail and inspiration. Joe's writing style is easy to read and Len Katlman's images are delightful. I am just starting in glamour photography, but with the ideas and hints this book provides it has made my desire burn that much hotter. GREAT BOOK!

Desperately in need of a re-write
The view from December 2000 is that this 1996 edition is now seriously outdated. This book was a handy reference when it came out in '96 but much has changed since then.

It's somewhat of an embarrassment for Peachpit to continue marketing this edition.

Accurate, but outdated
This book must have been an excellent guide when it was first published. But we all know what three years can do to this technology - the book is simply outdated. When I ordered it, I forgot to look at the "published" date. The book emphasizes specific equipment and software, some of which has long lost it's leadership in this market. It needs to be updated.

Plug-In Smart: How to Choose and Use Photoshop-Compatible Plug-Ins (Smart Design)

colorful, but fairly useless
The content of this book is not up to the quality of paper it is printed on or to the number of colorful pictures. The book is essentially a collection of advertisement of vendors offering photoshop-compatible plugins, which sponsored this book. The author neither attempts to compare the third-party plug-ins with those included into the Photoshop package, nor discusses the advantages and limitations of each plug-in. The enclosed CD containes primarily demo (limited functionality) versions of some plug-ins and programs, but no practical lessons, as most books with CD-ROMs do. If you are looking for an unusual effect which cannot be achieved by using the standard Photoshop filters, this book may help you to find a place where to buy what you need. Generally, you get much less than you would expect to get for this money.

limited use; limited scope; outdated
This book helped me to understand the general concept of plug-ins, but that's about all. I found it at half price, but it was hardly worth that to me. The CD is mostly a lot of save-disabled demos and trials for commercial plug-ins. It was written when Photoshop was in version 4.0, so even when it discusses plug-ins that come with Photoshop, it is too outdated. Plug-ins are not discussed in detail - only one (set of) setting(s) per plug-in is covered. I'd like to see a new book on this topic that also covers the multitude of free plug-ins now available. This book doesn't.

Very good content .. very overpriced
I finished this beautiful book in about 6 hours easy reading. The info was helpful .. lots of examples of PS plugins and what they did. HOWEVER I was not thrilled to pay the money for a once read book. The content could have been put in several .PDF files and folks allowed to view or download the content for much less money.

I want my money back!
I purchased this book because of the claim on the back cover that the topic of getting your digital images into a form that can be printed using conventional analog darkroom techniques was covered. It is very hard to find information on this subject anywhere in the vast library of books covering the subject of digital imaging. The introduction to the book states that in chapter 8 "You will learn about getting your digital images into a form that can be printed using conventional analog - silver based darkroom techniques. This includes examples such as making 4X5 negatives and transparencies from your images." Guess what - there is nothing in chapter 8 or anywhere else in this book that discusses these techniques.
