What a pleasant surprise this book has been! I bought it from a discount table at an agricultural fair in Maine and didn't really expect much. It is by far my husband's and my favorite cookbook. The meals are "real food," stuff you can serve your fussy kids and fussy guests. I haven't been disappointed with anything I've tried to date. We highly recommend the Spaghetti with Spicy Italian Meat Sauce -- it is better than any spaghetti sauce we have ever tried, always gets raves when we serve it and yet it has far less fat. Awesome! Other favorites: No Fry Chimichangas, Old Fashioned Beef Stew, Easy Chili, Sweet Potato Puff (great for Thanksgiving and less than half the fat of a version I used to make, and no one can tell the difference). This book is excellent.

I've probably prepared at least 35 recipes from this cookbook and almost all the dishes were just terrific. And what is particularly great is Ms. Tribole uses ingredients that are readily available, and the recipes are fast and easy to prepare. She gives the calorie count, fat gram count, and cholesterol count per serving for each recipe. Unfortunately the carb count is not included. One tip - Evaporated skim milk is used in many recipes; I have found this gives a slight sweetness that I find undesireable. Plain skim milk can be substituted with better results.

I have tried a number of the recipes in this book and haven't tasted one that I did not like. The recipes are not only low-fat, Tribole also incorporates healthy, nutritious ingredients into the recipes. I have tried numerous low fat and healthy cookbooks and none compare to this one in keeping the dishes delicious. It's the only cookbook that stays on my counter!

My only disappointment was that I did not have Book Three in my hand to read right away as Evelyn Horan cleverly leaves us on the edge of our seat, anxiously awaiting what happens next.

The book also lends itself wonderfully to teachers and parents alike. They will find in it great reference points to begin discussions about many subjects. A kaleidoscope of what growing from girlhood to young womanhood is all about. Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl series is sure to become a favorite for years to come.

I have to agree with the other reviews I read on this book. The Fourteen Bears is a wonderful children's story. When I was little it was my favorite book and I remember spending hours gazing at the pages and imagining that I lived in one of the hollow trees. I am lucky that my mother save this book for me and I am now able to read it to my daugthers. I went online tonight because I had hoped to puchase a new copy as mine is yellowed and torn. I hope Golden Books republishes this book in the near future.

How I loved this book as a child! It had such beautiful and detailed pictures. Not only did it take you through the wonderful story written on it's pages, but you could dream for hours of other stories the bears must have lived through! For the longest time, I couldn't remember the name of this wonderful book, and now I find that it is out of print. What a tragedy! All children (young and old) should be able to transport themselves through these pages into the bear's wonderful homes. I had so hoped I could find this book to share with my daughter! I just hope the publisher will realize what a classic this book is and republish it.

What a great memory from childhood. The story and illustrations will stay with you for a lifetime. I havn't seen a copy since elementary school but I can still remember the bears in their treehouses and skating on their pond and playing in the Sun. I can't say enough about the book. I hope Golden books reprints it soon so I can buy it for my daughter and my seventeen neices and nephews. It is a classic book that every child should have. My hats off to Evelyn Scott and Virginia Parsons for putting together such a great book.

Author Evelyn Horan has made learning about the frontier in the 1800s "fun." Horan has crafted a beautiful young adult novel all ages will enjoy and actually learn about life in the 1800s without having to plow through a boring textbook.
Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl is book one in a series of books about a far from prissy out west girl who is ready for adventure and packed with energy. Whether she is up against snakes or challenged by the theft of the family horses, her character does not disappoint the reader. Jeannie is friendly, funny, and ahead of her time in promoting the right for females to enjoy more than sewing, cooking and cleaning.
Horan has characters from Germany which adds an international flavor to the story making it even more appealing.
This delightful book is well-written and engages the reader from the beginning by allowing the reader to taste the period food, smell and visualize the flowers and have the hairs stand up on the backs of their necks with her descriptions of the real dangers faced on the frontier in the 1800s.Outstanding!

"Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl--Book-one" By Evelyn Horan, is a book that I, (a grown man in his late 40's) honestly enjoyed from the moment I first opened the book.

The charaters (Jeannie and Helga) with their many adventures, perils, and dangers, sortof reminded me of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. (A female version of course.) A couple of spunky twelve-year-olds attempting to live and enjoy life in the 1800's.

I loved this story and anyone that may have enjoyed The Little House On The Praire Series will love it!

The character are believable, the dialogue one of 'The Old West', and the plot both, educational and exciting. A very appealing combination.

I look forward to the next book in this delightful series!

I loved Book One and am now enjoying Book Two of the Jeannie, Texas Frontier Girl series. Evelyn Horan has a way of making characters come alive and feel as if they are members of your own family. I like the way she weaves Christian values into the story without having it overwhelm the overall theme of Frontier life in the 1880's. Kids of today will enjoy reading about these kids, Jeannie and Helga, of yesteryear - as will we 40-something kids at heart! I look forward to Book Three of the series - due out soon! If you love Janette Oke, you'll love Evelyn Horan too!

My husband & one of my daughters have to eat high-fiber, low-fat foods. In search of a cookbook that would provide me with healthy, low-fat, good-tasting versions of our favorite foods, I bought this book. All of the recipes I've tried so far taste great. No one can tell they're low-fat recipes. I'm so glad I can prepare low-fat food that doesn't taste like cardboard!

By far, this is my favorite cookbook in the entire world. My wife and I can never agree on anything (I like spicy and flavorful, she prefers blander dishes), but we both love every recipe we've tried from this book! The recipes are not too complex to make, most can be completed fairly quickly, they don't require many (if any!) exotic ingredients, and they taste fabulous.

The inclusion of complete nutritional information (including fiber, for you Weight Watchers folks who are computing points) is an added bonus. I lent this cookbook to a coworker, and I've purchased another copy because I just can't live without it!

I can't say enough good things about this book!! I bet I have a dozen low-fat or diet cookbooks collecting dust on my shelves because the recipes either don't taste good, they are too difficult to make, or I can't find the ingredients. Everything I have made from this cookbook has been fantastic and quick and easy, too. My husband loves what I cook now, and it is good for us, too. I am planning on purchasing her first Homestyle cookbook and getting rid of all the rest of my low fat cookbooks!

The book is excellent. I am looking for the Leaders Guide. I am organizing a conference for the women of my church with this book and I need the Leaders Guide. Has anyone found it?

This book has been a great help to me and to other women at Bryn Mawr College in understanding what prayer is, and how to pray more effectively. Christians on our campus are realizing more and more how central prayer is to loving and serving God. I talked with another friend who had read it, and we were surprised to discover that we had found it so helpful that we had outlined each one of Evelyn Christenson's points. If I can come up with the cash, I want to buy a copy of this book for every Christian woman on campus. (It's that good!) If you have any questions about prayer, or even if you are unsure if prayer is really that important, definitely get this book.

This was an awesome book. I feel that I need to start a bible study. I'm in the process of trying to find the leader's guide. I think the biggest thing that touched me was the fact that most of us pray answers not request. What I want is not necessarily what I need. God answers our prayers when it's the best time and whatever the best way. I want to thank Evelyn Christenson for being obedient to put the word out through this book. Thanks, Sue Kelly

This book follows the Gilbreth family's adventures from just after their dad has died until all the children are grown and married. The mishaps are humorous, the children are realistic and funny, and the plot is inspiring. However, this book lacks the one element that made its predecessor so incredibly wonderful: Dad.

Dad was the one who had the hilarious techniques, the atrocious standards, the crazy ideas. He was the one with the impossible ideals, superb gifts, and vibrant personality. Dad was the one who insisted that his home become a model of motion study and a picture of order. Incidently, Dad was the one that gave Cheaper by the Dozen its laughs, its suspense, and its plotline. Without him, Belles on Their Toes is funny, but feels lifeless because there is no Dad there to knock someone's elbow on the table.

I did enjoy reading this book and some parts had me laughing out loud. But if you're looking for another gripping story like Cheaper and the Dozen, look elsewhere. The main conflict of this book is Mother's struggle to send all of her children through college. It is a story about learning, maturing, and accomplishing goals.

I found this book in my cousin's room and did not emerge until, bleary-eyed, I had read it cover to cover. Since then, I've re-read it dozens of times, along with the prequel, Cheaper by the Dozen. Gilbreth family fans will want to know Frank Gilbreth wrote another, adult book, about his father. Also, the University of Texas at Austin has the Gilbreth motion-study film collection.

If you enjoyed Cheaper by the Dozen, reading this book is a must! After Father Gilbreth dies, Mother is left to carry on with her dozen children. The hilarious (and sometimes ridiculous) escapades in this book range from Tom, (the cook) having trouble dosing the Gilbreth clan with castor oil, to first dates and general instruction for the girls by their brothers on how NOT to get kissed! This book is HILARIOUS! Trust me - this is one you DON'T want to miss! Settle yourself down in your favorite easy chair and laugh yourself silly with the amusing escapades of the Gilbreth Clan!

The Price of Passion is a true page-turner in every sense of the word. I found myself reading at all hours of the night and telling all of my friends to read this book! I loved the way the plot unfolded and the characters are well-developed. I gave POP to my mother to read and she couldn't put it down either.

What I like best about POP is how this precious baby takes a hold of the lead character's heart and doesn't let go. POP is a true testament to the power of love. The story keeps you guessing what is going to happen next and trying to figure out the mystery as you go along.

I have to admit, when I first saw the other cover I was thinking the story was strictly political. It isn't but there are alot of political elements that come into play. What I also love about The Price of Passion is how it takes place right here in Austin, TX. I could truly visualize the scenes because I know all the places Evelyn wrote about. That made POP an extra treat. Most stories take place in towns you know nothing about. Austinites have a treat in store with this one. I also enjoyed the RV traveling with some "down home blues" thrown in too! :o)

This book is the story of an unusual family at the turn of the century, with twelve children. The father is an efficiency expert who runs the family like it is a factory assembly line, with everything timed down to the minute. Even the times for bathing are scheduled, so that the household runs smoothly. Mr. Gilbreth practices all of his ideas on how to run an efficient business on his family; they are the guinea pigs for new ideas.
He is the parent who disciplines all the kids, and the mom is really understanding of how hard it is to live in such an unusual family. Both of the parents were professionals, as the mom was also a psychologist and industrial engineer. They applied their professional ideas on raising the 12 kids. The children learn foreign languages, long division and about the solar system, using methods from Mr. Gilbreth's professional life. They were also taught touch typing and morse code by efficient methods. It is a very humorous look at the life of a large and unusual family. The ending of the book is sad, as Mr. Gilbreth dies, leaving Mrs. Gilbreth to raise the children alone.

The tone of the book is humor, as many of the situations are really funny, and the parents approach life with a sense of humor. The father is often very sarcastic, but not in a mean way. He liked to parade the family around and even though he was proud of them, he found the reactions of other people very funny. The parent's sense of humor made dealing with the problems of a large family easier, and made for a more loving lifestyle. Even though raising a family that large was serious business, they never took life too seriously. I think that is an important way to raise a family, by keeping a sense of humor. The father is a smart man, and he is never characterized as an idiot, even though he does some crazy things to help his family. The main theme throughout the book is the importance of humor in their lives.

Wonderful...Once you start to read the first page you wont be able to put the book down. This perfect way to spend a rainy day. You will be very amused when you read about the hilarious events of the Gilbreth family. The family of twelve children have many adventures you will enjoy reading. The father is almost crazy and a very successful business man. He is very strict and overprotective. He won't let his daughters wear make up or dress the way they like to. They slowly change his mind and begin to dress their way. He thinks his children can do anything and is also believed he could do anything. He loved jokes and laughing and you will love the practical jokes they play on each other. The rich family loves to go to movies then out for ice cream. They also spend their summers at the beach, where their Dad forces them to learn to swim. He wants them to learn as much as possible about everything so he always finds a way to teach them new things. As an efficiency expert he made sure that everything was done in a time efficient way. It was a sin to waste time in the Gilbreth house and he was constantly coming up with new ways to save time. The Dad in the story liked to parade around and show off his kids. Although this was embarassing to some of the kids as they got older Dad found it hilarious. The mother also was sometimes embarrassed or insulted by the attention they got or the comments other people made. This book will keep you laughing right up to the last chapter when Dad dies. The book is a mixture of humor and then sadness at the ending. This is an excellent book that everybody should read. I recommend this book for anyone that knows how to read no matter how old or young!

This book is the best book I have ever read. I own it and have read it many times. It kept me interested from the first page and you will not want to put it down. It is about a family of 12 children. Their dad is always thinking of new ways to save time and he thinks that he can teach him and his children anything. The family likes to play practical jokes on eachother and are always having a good time. This book is very interesting and never gets boring.

The authors are also dietitians and recognised experts in the field of nutrition. They provide realistic and thought provoking information for those struggling with food issues. The diet world is in revolution and the NONDIET philosopy is present as evidenced by this successful book! You can be fit and higher in body fat than those 'self-proclaimed' experts tell you. I read this book a little over a year ago at the suggestion of a friend and it has changed my life. The first few pages gave me hope when I had forever given up on changing my eating habits. I have made an effort to leave the diet mentality behind and have lost 25lbs in the process. The best part, I don't even feel like I am trying -- and certainly not dieting!!

I read this book at a time in my life when I was ready to hear it, and I believe it will only be useful to you if you're ready to listen. I'm not big on self-help books but I've tried about a thousand diets and have never - NEVER - managed to maintain weight loss for any great length of time. For whatever reason, this book spoke to me.
