HEALING LEGACY
A number of books have focused on health care for African-Americans. Most of them give advice on what should be done, how it is to be done and what to avoid. Staying Strong moves away from such a formula. It reclaims the ancient wisdom of African-American healing and points one to alternative methods of health care for African-Americans.

In a time where health care costs are sky rocketing, HMO's are calling the shots and the absence of a national health care insurance program for all, it is imperative for African Americans to be empowered in taking care of their own health.

Staying Strongs takes a wholistic approach concerning health care for African Americans. It takes into consideration the spiritual, mental, and physical dimensions that work together in assuring that one is in good health. One is introduced to the conventional and non-coventional methods used to bring balance to one's life. Each alternative healthcare system is explained and the pros and cons are laid out for the individual to make a decision as to what is right for them. This is an excellent guide for those who want to take charge of their health and are looking for alternative methods.

Beautiful book
Loved this book. Beautiful photos-my only criticism is that I found many photos were repeated through the book in different chapters. I liked the index at the back of the book which listed sources for finding objects featured in photos. I also have Martha Baker's book, Garden Ornaments, and recommend both. These books have a permanent place on my bookshelf and bedside table.

PRESUMTIOUS PRECEPT
Its title claims a broad accomplishment, an "all your answers are here" assertion. Although it presents hundreds of historical figures, it is quickly evident that by "History of Women," the author means "The Plight of Women and What Their Heroes Have Done About It." The narrative embraces the concept that from this county's origin to the present, women are victims of misogyny, but that there are several heroes of the struggle. Despite the decline in feminist momentum, there nevertheless seems to be a wealth of "historical" readings recently published by feminists. A critique of feminism's tenants will not be attempted with this review, but it seems pressing to take issue with the didactic narratives of "historical" texts such as Born for Liberty. Exempt from their presentations is a clear discussion of three essential components: definitions of the terms "oppression" and "liberty," and the ideologies that steer their metanarratives in the name of "history." The exemption of these elements does not allow for rhetorical inquiry, which is vital for the veracity of the texts' contents. Feminist history, arguably a genre of its own, credulously seeks to convert its readers on the pretense that there is a universal understanding of what it means to be oppressed and liberated. Once readers naively embrace this pretense, they are prone to also believing the tenants of feminism. Perhaps, then, the narrative of Born for Liberty will successfully promote the feminist agenda, but its converts will have naively succumbed to the same tactics of hierarchical propaganda that it claims to abhor.

Wonderful look at Women's History
I enjoyed reading Evans look a the history of Women in the U.S. From it's beginnings in the colonial times, through the suffrage movement up to the 80's. It's a wonderful look at part of our history that is ignored in most texts. Highly recommend for any student of women's history!

A thorough and informative history of women in the U.S.
Evans' "Born for Liberty" is an excellent history of women in the U.S. The women's rights movements are often times portrayed as struggles of white middle-class women for white middle-class women. Evans includes the struggles and contributions of working-class women, black women, and immigrant women to the women's rights movements. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the struggle for equality and the role of women in shaping this country's history.

reader from New York City
I've bought a couple of the other books in this series and I have to say that this one was a total diappointment. The crafts in this book were just so ordinary. I was hoping for some unique crafting ideas but only got some projects that I probably did as a Brownie or Girl Scout. Not worth the money.

Christmastime Treats: by Sara Perry
Another winner from Sara Perry! I'm giving this to all my young friends with children, and to the grandparent set as well. The crafts are easy to make, and the recipes are rewarding in every way. Fun to make, fun to eat! Sara's well thought out recipes, and step by step craft instructions set this book apart from the rest.

Help arrived just in the nick of time!
This book was so helpful to me as a full time working mother with a 7 year old daughter. The crafts were simple to do, yet looked like we had spent days in the making. What more could a mother want! My daughter loved making the easy decoupage christmas balls almost as much as my in-laws loved receiving them. The candy land house was our schools answer to the dreded gingerbread house (the frame is made from a six pack carboard container) I cheer the author who can put together such a well written & workable book. In closing I am off to the kitchen to whip up one of the fabulous recipes! I would say wish me luck, but I have confidence in the Snow White Bunnies being the perfect answer.

Hopefully Helpful
The title indicates that this book is about womens civil rights. This is what I considered part of the thesis of the book as well. However, as I read this book it seemed to me that very little of the book concentrated on the struggles women made during the Civil Right Movement of the 1960's. The book focused mostly on the race issue of the movement only sporadically mentioning the struggles women faced. I feel that she could have asserted her personal experiences in a more profound manner by keeping foucus on her thesis "The Roots of Women's Liberation in the Civil Rights Movement & the New Left". This book is a valuable read from the historic perspective, but I do not consider it to be an easy read fucused on its main subject matter. In other words, if you don't have to read it or the Civil Rights Movement as a whole is not in your main interest, perhaps you should look for another book.

Personal Politics Gets Personal
I chose this book to read for my book report in history class. I had never read any of Sara Evans' other works, but it seemed interesting from reading the jacket. Once I started reading, it pulled me in. I think that because Sara used so many personal stories it really drew me in. I would not consider myself a feminist, but after reading this book, it opened my eyes to a lot of things I was unaware of. So, I definitely recommend this book to everyone.
