Light of Christmas
If you only read one Christmas book this season, make it "The Light of Christmas" by Richard Paul Evans. This is a beautiful, well told story for children of all ages. "The Light of Christmas" pulled at my heart strings and brought tears to my eyes. This is a gift that I will share with my family and friends for Christmas. Thank you, Richard Paul Evans, for helping bring the meaning of Christmas back into my life.

The Light of Christmas
As Christmas books come and go with each passing season, few have caught my attention as "The Light of Christmas" has. It encompasses the main idea of Christmas, which is that by reaching out to those in need, one learns the true message of why we celebrate the "Light" of Christmastime. Mr. Evans does a fantastic job by including such things as the "Light" and Santa Claus or rather Father Christmas, without pounding in too hard the message of Christ only. He does a very commendable job at combining the two, which I think would be a hard task for any author, especially with a children's book. On top of it all, the illustrations are absolutely beautiful, and are timeless in nature, so this book will be enjoyed for people of all ages and for many generations. This book is a must for every home!

A Gentle Book about A Gentle Spirit
This book tells a simple story about a boy who makes a hard decision that is both kind and generous. This story was read to a staff of adults at our annual Christmas party and all of us sat enrapt and charmed as we listened and watched each page turn. The pictures are beautiful and the story is something that all ages will enjoy. A delightful find and one that I will give as a gift each year.

A reader from Chatham, New Jersey
While Richard Paul Evans' new tale is lovely to read, the gorgeous illustrations are what truly make this book magical. Jonanthan Linton's illustrations are beautiful, inspiring and breathtaking. His realistic paintings are full of color and light. My favorite is of the old woman as she faces the man...you can see the goodness radiating from her face! I have purchased two other Richard Paul Evans' books solely because the illustrations are so amazing! They are, THE DANCE and THE SPYGLASS...most impressive!!

The story of a young man who wants to be well-known
Jonathan Linton provides the illustrations for this story of a young man who wants to be well-known in his village. He constructs a tower which reaches into the sky so all will look up to him - but finds his position a lonely one until fate intervenes. Good reading skills or parental assistance required.

BEAUTIFUL & TIMELY
I really admire Richard Paul Evans writing because this original story feels like you're reading a classic folk tale. The story of a man learning to share with others, and put his vanity behind him has never been more timely. Children and adults should take this story to heart. The art is stunning.

Well done oral history of unsung blues hero
Richard Congress has championed the music of the late Yank Rachell, one of the few blues artists to record extensively on the mandolin. Congress has made available some of rachell's hard to fine post-war recordings on his Random Chance label as well as put together Rachell's oral history. The first 100 or so pages are devoted to Rachell's recollections and if some parts are sketchy, its because Rachell's death prevented Congress from fleshing out more details. Rachell's association with John Estes and others in the neglected Jackson, Tennessee music scene is discussed as is his life as a travelling musician, as well as his pursuits of daytime employment unlike others he played with. He recounts playing in St. Louis and then recording, Big Joe Williams and John Lee "Sonny Boy Williamson" and his early recordings as well as moving up to Indianopolis for the last years of his life. The oral history is supplemented by Rich Delgrosso's discussion of Yank's mandolin style, David Evans' distillation of Yank's guitar playing and recollections of those who came under Yank's spell including Henry Townsend and Charlie Musselwhite. A full discography of Yank's recordings, both as a leader and an accompanist is provided. In summary, this is a very nicely put together volume that provides us with a window into a slice of the blues past often neglected.

Discusses the mandolin instrument's contributions to blues
Richard Congress' Blues Mandolin Man provides a biography of the life and music of Yank Rachell, a 1960s blues mandolin performer. This is his first biography, and one of the few books to discuss the mandolin instrument's contributions to blues.

I truly enjoyed it.
I recognized Richard Paul Evans name from Timepiece. Actually I was not very impressed much by that one (possibly because I haven't read the Christmas Box).

But the Locket did change my view of him. Richard is a very, very good writer. I finished it in a couple days with the last 4 straight hours reading it through the end. I really like the way the story goes and how each character is woven into each other. It's a love story, but not the type that made you sick in the stomach. Instead it touches my heart. A few times it brought tears to my eyes. Very touching. I particularly like the Forgiveness chapter. Several excellent thoughts on life surface throughout the book.

A book that you can't stop reading, such a love story!
My daughter volunters at a Public Library. She has given me some beautiful books. The "Locket" was a l998 Christmas Present. Prior to this she had given me The Christmas Box, The Letter, and Time Piece. It's difficult to say which I liked the best; they are all beautiful. I like the "size" easy to hold when you read lying down! Have given them for Christmas and birthday presents. I have enjoyed his writings so much would love to be able to meet him and his family. Lost my husband just a year ago; I thank the Lord that I have good eye sight there are so many wonderful books; computeers, TV, or movies can never take their place.

The Locket won't let you down
Since I have read his other books: The Christmas Box, The Timepiece, The Letter, and The Carousel, I knew what to expect from Richard Paul Evans. He is a truly remarkable mastermind and The Locket won't let you down. It is such a wonderful story filled with romanticism and immense substance. His primary characters are spontaneous and so distinct, it's fun to read how they correspond. You feel remorseful at one moment, then condemn them the next. The theme of this book is allegiance, passion, and sympathy that touches your sensitivity and consciousness to the median. In conclusion, I just have to say that I think this is the type of book that readers can devour as well as learn from. I'm looking forward to next book by Richard Paul Evans.

Davis'portrayal of the Amazon is brilliant.
One River was one of the best books I have read in quite some time. As a Ph.D student in Botany, I was inspired by the accounts of Shultes, Plowman and Davis' journeys to the Amazon seeking tropical plants and learning from the people who have been using them for generations.. Davis has a rare ability to mix technical science writing with a deep knowledge of history, culture, and politics and make it flow into a coherent narrative. Any student of ecology, evolution, (especially of plants) will love this book as will people with an interest in the cultures and history of the Amazon basin.

A jewel of science documentary and travel writing
This book is a beyond-detail-rich look at the enterprise of ethnobotany in an extraordinary region of threatened biological wealth, through a biography of one of the field's greatest figures. It is a planet of a book, a book to get lost in like the rainforest itself; I read it in deeper and deeper skims to take it in. I felt like Davis was giving me, not some facts about the Amazon, but a transferred chunk of the reality of the place itself.

Curiously, I was advised that this would not be a good book to recommend to a family member who is very interested in biology and in indigenous cultures - because of all the objectionable hallucinogens in the book, which are typical of the region. (Once all the remnants of the peoples discussed have been converted to alcoholism, doubtless it will become permissible to know about them...) That would be one reason to support this book: it is a window out of our preconceptions, or at least out of the the ones that are uninformed or that don't know they need to *be* informed. This book is worth sitting down with, and worth passing on.

Human & Ecological Diversity Fall Victim to the Modern World
"One River" will take you on a journey that you will never forget. It will introduce you to one of the twentieth century's most remarkable men--Richard Evans Schultes, as well as one of the world's most fascinating places--the Amazon.

The book is the story of the work of Schultes and two of his students, including the author Wade Davis. It will take you as close as you can ever be to lost cultures and lost ecosystems along with cultures and ecosystems that are very much endangered. Wade Davis is a champion of both human and ecological diversity. "One River" is probably the most eloquent testament to ethnic and biological diversity I've ever read.

As the modern world encroaches on every last nook and cranny of this beautiful earth, "One River" serves as a primer about what once was and about the price we pay as we lose one more species, or one more human culture forever.

This book is an adventure story. It is a story of incredible academic accomplishment. The term academic, with its connotations of being hopelessly removed from the real world does not apply here. Schultes and his students could not be more connected to the real world.

"One River" is the story of man and nature and how the two interact, each forever changing the other. Read this book and then tell your friends about it. While it is hard to make such a claim (there are so many good books), I'd have to say this is my favorite book.

read the review
Read this book with Terence Mckenna's Food of the Gods. They work well together. Don't be afraid of the subject. If you've read the primary literature avoid this book unless your running a "trip" mission and you want to turn people on. These two men are giants on the subject. Forget the review. Buy the book out a repect. Schultes and Hoffman were trippy before most of us were born. P.S. All that God stuff, it's importmant but it was the thrill seeker in all of us that got us here.

The spiritual powers of healing and hallucinogenic plants
The spiritual powers of healing and hallucinogenic plants are surveyed anew in Plants Of The Gods, a revised and expanded edition of a true classic which paring color photos of the plants with a wealth of solid botanical details. This revision covers the traditions of different cultures which use the plants, uses of hallucinogens in sacred rites and prayers, and solid coverage of the rituals themselves.

A Good All-Around Buy
Plants of the Gods is a condensed ethnobotanical encyclopedia of hallucinogenic drugs with nicely illustrated cultural/art/chemical information . This book illustrates why these psychoactive plants have been so important, nay, a necessity of primordial human consciousness and experience because of their medicinal, teleportal, and communicative capabilities. It even includes a beautifully annotated color-picture field guide lexicon. It begins with a history of plant hallucinogens and then explores their cremonial/ritualistic use in various cultures around the world, creating a sense of their cultural AND artistic importance in other societies that ACTUALLY RESPECT and don't abuse them. Plants of the Gods leaves you with a sense of respect for these plants when you realize that smoking pot in some basement just to break rules is like a rites of passage sacrament practiced by many tribal cultures who know the importance of this experience which we seem to have neglected and even outlawed. Thoroughly descriptive, yet easily digestible,it reads more as a quick refrence guide /bedtime story than a book-"book", but is captivating and informatively engaging at the same time.

A Good Read!
Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans have written a clever, candid, thorough guidebook for managers who would like to keep good people in their employ. With no filler, and plenty of insightful stories, this well-organized book is divided into 26 chapters - each one named for a strategy that begins with a sequential letter of the alphabet. Illustrated with color graphics that carry the eye to sidebars and other informative tidbits, the book offers advice ranging from professional to personal. It makes plenty of sense. We [...] recommend this book to anyone who manages or supervises employees, and for employees themselves.

The Best Book to help retain the employees you love!
Love 'Em or Lose 'Em is one of those books you want to give to every manager, supervisor, executive who has ever let a talented employee walk out the door, in turn causing them thousands of dollars to replace. Dr. Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans have made this book full of easy to use activities and useful To-do lists that are critical tools for ANYONE who has employees that they would hate to lose. I found the book extremely easy to read, and the 26 chapters fun to go through. The book is designed so that you can take and apply one chapter (or retention strategy) at a time, instead of being overwhelmed by trying to apply them all at once. A lot of the strategies in the book are common sense, but I know that managers still don't apply them when an employee is about to walk out the door. I would hope that ALL managers, supervisors, executives, etc. would apply just ONE strategy. I think they would be amazed and surprised at the effectiveness this one attempt would have on changing the employee's mind to stay. I highly recommend this book for all organizations, and for all levels within the organization. It truly is the best book I have read on retention strategies, and the authors make the book so applicable to the challenges faced in today's tight labor market!

A Great Resource For Retaining Key Employees
Love 'Em or Lose 'Em is an excellent resource that all employers should read to better understand the needs of their employees. The way people work is changing constantly and employers need to realize that each of their employees need to be stimulated and encouraged to do their best.

Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans organize this book in an easy to read fashion. Yet the writing is not dry at all. The exasmple are explained with many real world examples and even in a fun friendly manner. Kaye and Evans encourage bosses to communicate effectively with their workers. They stress the importance of having retention meetings and getting feedback from key employees. Also important is creating a professional but fun work environment. Overtime may be necessary to complete key projects. But reward employees with a festive meal or a sporting actiity. It never hurts to mentor these key employees and to get to know their personal lives a little without infringing on their space.

Also key to this book is an outline illustrating how the loss of one critical employee effected the attitude of a particular department and even the company as a whole. This recessionary economy will soon lift and many employers need to realize that layoffs and rigid policies will only restrict organizational growth. An excellent resource on many levels.

It IS A Miracle
It is so amazing to me how one man's work and experiences can touch the lives of so many people. This is a true miracle. Mr. Evans is an exquisite man with the ability to help others see the true purpose in life and cope with tragedy that may come their way. I read the book cover to cover without putting it down. I cried, I laughed, I felt the pain and the joy shared in each story. This book came at the perfect time for this nation. A time to understand destiny, healing, and hope. Thank you, Mr. Evans, for a wonderful book that I will cherish and share with many others.

OUR NATION NEEDS THIS BOOK!
As I sat down and read Richard Paul Evans' The Christmas Box Miracle from cover to cover, it gave me hope, a sense of healing and reminded me of the miracles that truly do happen in our lives!
At a time that our nation feels so unsecure, this book gave me the confidence and hope that I was searching for. I cannot thank you Mr. Evans for being so humble and willing to share your experiences and miracles. What a divine destiny we all have and a reminder that when tragedy strikes, we can pull together and know that we are not alone! I treasured the stories about The Christmas Box Angel Monuments, that you have created a place for those who have lost loved ones can go to grieve and heal from our losses. TRULY A BOOK TO SHARE WITH EVERYONE! Thank you Mr. Evans for giving us hope!

Miracles really do exist!!
Last night i read The Christmas Box Miracle and i must say that i was deeply moved by it's contents. Look at the pictures
This childrens' story book is illustrated with reproductions of Jacob Collins paintings. This book is a treasure because of these illustrations! Collins is one of foremost living realist painters. With respect to technique, he is getting up there with the likes of Odd Nerdrum and his paintings sell in the five figures last time I looked -- probably much higher now. The two portaits of women in this book are incredibly valuable for anyone who aspires to paint in the realist tradition -- or anyone who loves painting. Because it's a "story" book, this little volume costs a lot less than an art monograph, and what a treasure. Wish the images were larger, butmay-be one day we'll get a book on Collins.

The Christmas Candle
If you are a person who reads books to school children, this is a perfect book to read. It is the best holiday book with true meaning I have read, that teaches children to look in their environment to find ways to be helpful, and the true meaning of the holidays, that we are all one large family of mankind. You will not be disappointed in purchasing this book. Beautiful illustrations and a moving story.

I LOVE this book!
I love this book so much. It is truly a story for all ages, and it is deeply profound and moving. To me, it is the perfect book, with perfect illustrations!!!!!!

Great tool for bargin hunters!
I was not sure what to expect when I picked up the book, but for [the price] why not check it out. It was much better than anything I expected or have read in similar titles. The author gives the reader a solid foundation for entering and exiting low priced stocks. The book is filled with lots of good examples of the right time to buy beaten up stocks. The primary focus of his selection technique is technical analysis, although there is a fundamental bent thrown in. If you are thinking that there are bargins to be had after the past 2 years in the market, this is a title well worth checking out.

Excellent Book!
Very helpful in determining what, where, and when to buy stocks that have experience significant correction. Since the latest 2000 correction in the market, one would think that people will pay more attention to this type of thinking rather than simple momentum investing.

Excellent details, charts, graphs and explanations of how to chart the beginning of a turnaround for stocks that have been corrected or depressed.

Highly Recommended!
The title of this book is a bit misleading in that it mentions the words "hidden values" which are usually associated with fundamental analysis. In fact, this book advocates stock trading based on charts. Everybody knows that we should "buy low and sell high". But when is the price of a stock "low"? This book will give you an answer.
