Best book written on the founder of the interpersonal school
I've read all the major books written on Harry Stack Sullivan and this one is by far the clearest, most comprehensive, and easy to understand. I can think of no better introduction to the interpersonal school of psychiatry. Sullivan is one of those seminal thinkers who was ignored for years because he was so critical of psychoanalysis and because his ideas were so radical. Only now, fifty years after his death are the implications of his work beginning to be grappled with by the field of psychiatry. If you want to understand Sullivan, before you read Sullivan, read this book. This is the book to start with.

Strenuous Hikes!
I bought this book hoping for some moderate day hikes. Only 11 were 5 mi. or less, and some of those could be found in any guide book. This book is really written for sturdy backpackers: most hikes are overnighters or more.

That said, the book is well prepared and each hike is accompanied by a topographical map and detailed directions and descriptions. Essential information, such as water availability, elevation change and permit requirements are summarized at the beginning of each description. The book also has an excellent 40+ page introduction to hiking and camping.

I can't vouch for the accuracy of the trail information, which was first compiled in 1984, revised for the second time in 1995; (make sure you get the 1995 ed.) I found no information about the extent of the revision.

I wish the hike index in this and other books incorporated distance and elevation change, and approximate location. Without this quick reference it's a chore to find a hike that fits one's plans and capabilities.

All illustrations are in B&W, but the photographs are quite good and adequate to give a sense of the terrain.

If you are a backpacker, or can handle strenuous day hikes in tough terrain, get this book. Otherwise, there are some other books that are more suitable.

Happy Hiking!

Master Reference!
This "Hikers Bible" is the most complete publication of it's kind on this subject that I own to date. Harry Evans has outdone most similar books by adding detailed topos with milage points clearly marked on the trail maps. With detailed information on each area, one feels like they have all ready been there. The photos are excellent!

Lousy format spoils otherwise good edition
This book has useful (though not terribly complete) introductions to each of the plays, focusing mainly on comparing various Folio and Quarto editions of the plays. It also contains some nice pictures, though I wish the Latin in them were translated or shown at a legible size. It has very nice appendicies nothing the first appearances of all the characters in the plays, and a timeline showing what historical events were occuring in relation to works written by Shakespeare and events in his life, as well as to plays by other playwrights and other literature produced at that time. The pages are relatively thin and the print small. However (this referes to the '74 edition, maybe they have changed it since then) the plays are a royal pain to read. The pages are about a foot high and the notes are at the bottom. There is no marking to indicate whether a line has a note, so the reader must read a line or two, glance down at the notes, read another few lines, look at the notes again, and so on. Were it not for this major annoyance, this would be a very good (and very complete) edition of Shakespeare's works.

The most complete edition of the Bard and a superb companion
This one-volume edition of Shakespeare's works is the most complete I found on the market: it includes "The Two Noble Kinsmen", Shakespeare's addition to "Sir Thomas More" (with photographical reproduction of the pages believed to be in his handwrite), the currently hot debated poem "A Funeral Elegy by W. S." and, above all, "The Reign of King Edward III", a new play recently accepted in the canon by many authoritative editors (Arden, Cambridge, Oxford). The text of each work is carefully edited and accompanied by helpful glossarial notes, a textual discussion with short bibliography, and an impressive collation which allows the reader to find variant readings and emendations. An exhaustive critical introduction precedes each play and poem, dealing with authorship, date, sources, textual differences between quarto and folio texts, and of course the principal thematic issues. What makes this a superb edition - and indeed a real "companion" to Shakespeare studies! - is the great amount of subsidiary material, including a general introduction - focusing on Shakespeare's life, art, language, style, and on the Elizabethan historical and theatrical background - and a series of useful essays on various themes: critical approaches to the plays and poems, philological issues, history of the plays on the stage, television and cinema. There are also many interesting documents, synoptic tables, glossaries, indexes, illustrated tables (both coloured and b&w) , the reproduction of the introductory pages of the First Folio of 1623, and a rich bibliography. I personally consider this book a must have for every teacher, scholar, or simply amateur of the greatest of all poets. Buy it!

Good Edition
While I sympathize somewhat with the review below -- the introductions do quibble a bit over the differences between Folio and Quarto versions, the exact source material etc. -- I found this to be an excellent version of the complete works. The essay before each play is very helpful toward understanding the literary context of the play--they _do_ talk about the characters and the action of the play, in a way that nicely complements the text. The illustrations (some black and white, some color) are also interesting and helpful. The book contains both a general introduction, which is accessible, if slightly daunting, to a reader who might not be intimately familiar with all of the plays, serving to excite interest at least. It also contains an essay on 20th century Shakespeare criticism, which introduces many of the newer movements in Shakespeare criticism that are not included in the general introduction (which focuses more on the Elizabethan historical period, and more immediate reactions to the plays). The footnotes, while they are not indicated on the line itself, are located on the same page. In looking at several other editions, I found that footnotes were sometimes actually endnotes--i.e. located in one section at the end of the play, which would be very disruptive to reading. Happily, this is not the case in this edition.

The book, as the title claims, includes all of Shakespeare's plays, Sonnets, and poems. The appendices include many other interesting tidbits that help shine some light on old Billy's life, including his will, in which he enigmatically bequeathed a "second-best bed" to his wife. Other documents are included, often with explanations to help the reader to understand (as the documents are printed verbatim, the Elizabethan spelling and punctuation is a slight impediment).

Overall, I found this to be the best of the paperback and hardcover editions I examined.

Extraordinary scholarship, elegance of style.
Harold Evans has produced a tour de force. This is a tribute to America from a loving immigrant--a man who has gained international fame as an editor and writer, first in his native Britain and later in the United States. Evans has produced a superb history of 20th century America, but his book starts in the last century so as to give us a perspective on what was to follow. The research is prodigious; the selection of photographs is stunning; the writing is elegant and unintrusive. This is a book meant to be savored page by page--and to be handed down as a heirloom.

Honest, Substantive History
The obvious comparison with this book (and tape series) is Peter Jennings' "The Century." I've listened to both tape series. Here's the difference in a nutshell: Jennings' "Century" is slickly produced, grandly entertaining sound-bite history in which the Big Lies of right-wing "mainstream" media mythology are preserved without question. Evans' "Century" is nowhere nearly as slick or exquisitely entertaining. But it is a _history;_ it is substantive and honest and, for my money, far more worthwhile.

An excellent summary of the last 100 years.
An American Century is one of those books that will continue to enlighten you no matter how many times you pick it up to read. This is a coffee table book that will entertain your guests, and you don't have to be there. Anyone who has the slightesr interest in the history of this country will find this book fascinating.

Bitchy but amusing
WHAT did Tina Brown do to Judy Bachrach? That's really the question you keep asking yourself while reading this bitchy if amusing book. Not that Ms Brown and Mr Evans don't deserve quite a bit of the stick they get here, but it is so... unrelenting. Judy Bachrach now works for Tina Brown's successor at Vanity Fair, and she applies to Tina and Harry the gossipy techniques which made VF's success. She should have applied fuller disclosure to her motives.

That being said, most details here are probably accurate. Thebook is not published in the UK for fear of libel suits. Not very sportsmanlike of Tina and Harry.

CORRECTION TO MY REVIEW
Hi there and apologies for bothering you. Judy Bachrach has contacted me to point out that when I say an anecdote was repeated twice at the start of the book, I should in fact have said an entire quote. I know this sounds like splitting hairs, but she seems a little perturbed by this and so if you could change the review to make it 100 percent accurate I'd be very grateful. Many thanks in advance for your understanding.

nasty fun
This book is a nasty, in a sophistiacated 1930s sort of way. Think, Clare Booth Luce's "The Women". This book is the story of an unrelenting social climber who had genuine talent and ability on her side but little grace, humility or kindness. And it caught up with her. The book does a good job of showing why Ms. Brown has so many enemies and why she rose to such starry heights in the first place. It's great for people who love NYC, or who love journalism, or anyone who just wants a juicy piece of shameless gossip.
