This book is so good. He walked like a cat, then a pig in the mud, then a bunny. It is an old book, but it is very good.

Anonymous 8 yr old
I gave it five stars because it is a caldecott honor book. It is about a boy that is trying to walk like lots of animals. Then he does something special. Read the book if you want to know.

This is a great little book for pre-schoolers!
This book is about a young boy on a farm who tries to emulate the walks of a number of animals. It was a 1966 Caldecott Honor book (i.e., a runner-up to the Medal winner) for best illustrations in a children's book. Pre-schoolers will love it.

Ets At Her Best
For the very youngest connoisseurs of fiction, Marie Hall Ets is truly a gift. Her themes are simple, often focusing on a child's perception of a single event or element in his or her life. Yet she explores that one theme to its fullest potential.

In this work, In the Forest, Ets is at her very best. We're led into the mind of a young boy celebrating his birthday. Through uncomplicated style and prose, the reader/listener experiences the fanciful imagination of the boy as he wanders through the forest. The drama builds gradually, adding animal characters who act as foils as well as companions to our hero, until the moment when his father appears to take him home. The magic is dispelled, and the animals retreat back into the forest of the child's imagination.

For very young children, who are just beginning to grasp the essential elements of plot and the connection of elements in a story line, this is an ideal introduction to fiction. But it's not only an investment with educational value. You'll be entertained by it again and again

Christmas in Mexico
This children's book is about a five-year-old Mexican girl and her first posada (a Christmas festival in Mexico) and her first Christmas piƱata. Children have always loved the story and also have used the book to learn more about the culture and life of another country. "Nine Days to Christmas" is highly recommended. Aurora Labastida was the librarian for children's books in Mexico City and she cowrote this story with Marie Ets who was the illustrator. The book won the 1960 Caldecott Medal for best illustration in a children's book.

Nine Days to Christmas unlocks the Magic of Christmas in Mex
As a child, this book open the world to me. Nine Days to Christmas lets children learn about and explore the traditions of Christmas in Mexico while capturing the thrill and confusion of early childhood. Thirty years after reading this book, I look forward to sharing the magic of Nine Days to Christmas with my own children.

A vivid tale
I stumbled across this book a month ago while writing a term paper on Italian immigration.
Rosa's tale is a poignant story. Her life story reveals her pride, faith and determination to survive in both the new and old world and her unwillingness to compromise her values.

I highly recommend this book!

Rosa's life is unforgetable, as is Rosa herself
First we need to thank Helen Barolini for resurrecting this precious book from obscurity. And for all those who complain there are no uplifting, inspiring tales about Italians, here in Rosa The Life Of An Italian Immigrant, is the proof that there certainly is.

Rosa would be the first to say she was no one special, just an ordinary peasant orphan who kept herself from starvation and worse by the faith of her religion and incredilby hard work for her entire life. Not that hard work is a surprise but the reality with which this uneducated woman shows us a plain ordinary life is as unforgettable as she is. God gave her the gift to tell the story of her life, to share laughs and to charm her new friends in wherever she landed, in a mining camp, a convent school or a silk factory.

From her early life as a child laborer who is beaten for mistakes in the silk mills of the 1860s to the uneducated young girl who is forced to marry a lousy, drunken bum, Rosa perseveres and triumphs with a long life and many friends who love her. You can't read this story with out falling in love with this precious woman as she endures life.

In 2001, it is hard to imagine that the cruelties Rosa suffered were every day occurences a century ago (or even less!), that is, nothing unusual. We have come a long way baby, but we had better not forget where we've come from.

Rosa The Life Of An Italian Immigrant will keep you rooted in the reality of our history and ancestry. Buy it, read it. Give it to your friends. Buy them their own copies! Give it as gifts to all the young women in your family.

Rosa's story must be remembered. Her story is unforgetable, so is Rosa Cavalleri.

Hey, Hollywood, I dare you to make a movie about this incredible woman!!!!

Celebrating Childhood!
This story is so very simple, yet as charming and imaginative as the mind of a child. The writing style makes for great reading out loud, and the story will see you through bedtime after bedtime. A must have for any child's library

Excellent art, delightful story!
This is a fine vintage children's story. Marie Hall Ets was a wonderful, imaginative illustrator as well as a fine writer. This story of a dog, a cat, a mouse, and how they saved their home - and their shoemaker - from his bossy sister is a delight for both children and their parents (and grandparents!). I wish it would be re-printed; but in lieu of that, I recommend that you grab it whenever you run across it second-hand!

Teaches gentleness and patience
This book is wonderful at teaching children about nature/wildlife and about how to be gentle and patient. The illustrations are simple, yet full of expression. You watch the little girl try to play with various creatures from nature, and you see her sad expression as they all leap away from her. But because of her patience and gentle, quiet spirit, all the creatures eventually come to her to play. And that is the only reason I did not rate this a 5. In trying to be realistic with my own children, having a fawn or chipmunk come up to play is unrealistic regardless of how quiet or patient you are. But overall a great book for young children.

I loved this book as a child, now my son loves it too!
I loved this book as a child, and reading it to my own child takes me back to lovely, lazy afternoons spent in the company of my grandmother. The message of Play With Me is one of respect and interest in the lives of living creatures around us. The book is wonderful for anytime, but especially for preparing a young child for bed or for a nap because it is a quiet, quietly happy book. Buy it for your budding naturalist or environmentalist and enjoy!

THE WORST BOOK UNDER THE SUN! IT DOESN'T DESERVE ANY STARS!
This is bar none the worst book in creation. When I was a very little girl, I found this story terrifying. It gave me NIGHTMARES FOR MONTHS! My 1st grade teacher read it to the class and to this day I can remember the stark terror this story instilled in me. Who was it written for? There is nothing to sustain an adult's interest and in retrospect I can see why it scared the daylights out of me as a child.

This is a macabre, dark tale about a demonic, personified roadster that terrorizes and crushes all creatures that lie in its wake. Its driver did for that personified hunk of junk (on page 1, he stopped just so he could get water for it). The demonic car was finally hit by a train because it refused to wait at the train crossing. The picture of the crying grill surrounded by its scattered parts GAVE ME NIGHTMARES FOR MONTHS! The final passage about the scattered parts that were no longer being used and left to rust was very upsetting. WHAT A TERRIBLE MESSAGE! I remember waiting in the girls' room during subsequent readings just to dodge this story. I would tell the childrens' librarian whenever my then class made our Friday trips to the town library to "hide this book so my teacher doesn't see it and check it out." My mother was a teacher at the time and I told her never to read it to her class because "it's a very bad book and just too scary." I would never wish this horrible book on anyone.

Little Old Automobile
The Little Old Automobile was a great find for my 4 year old son and I. It is a silly little story about an automobile that has a mind of its own. The book has lots and repetition and my son enjoys the simplicity of this book.

One of the best picture books in creation!
Like all "scary" stories for very young children, one has to know who can bear them and who can not--so choose your audience. Delightful for adults and children alike (though apparently the children/adults have to have a strong sense of fantasy and fun--and mine do). Great humor. For the childlike. Don't miss it--a classic.
