Ernst's art was unique to his time as he drew upon boyhood memories of Germany (his father was the great Surrealist master Max Ernst, his mother Jewish journalist and art historian Louise Straus-Ernst -- killed in the Holocaust at the hands of Nazis. Ernst developed a distinctly American style of his own blending abstract, crystalline form to the spiritual imagery of Gothic art. Ernst fused the vigor of American jazz and Native American cultural concepts with his European memories in paintings that would evolve decade by decade as expressions of "visual scat", an ultimately pure abstraction. Jimmy Ernst is a welcome and important contribution to the history of 20th Century American art.

A wonderfully depicted story of life as the son of a world-renowned aritst and the implications and advantages of that life, i.e. a boyhood filled with relationships with the most renowned artists of this century. Jimmy writes with sensitivity about his often absent father and intertwines it with the happenings of World War II and its impact on his family. An informative and lovingly-told tale.

This is a thorough, easy to follow guide with accurate contact information for each court and is displayed well. Some information however is outdated as to what information is allowed public access. This arena changes frequently and the book was published in '98. I'd buy a 1999 edition in a hearbeat.
