Incredible!
This book is very scary and very creepy..especially to me, someone who has paid lip service to Christ all his life but never really started to pay attention until a few months ago... for me it is a direct indication of where I could've fallen all too easily had I not made some good decisions... Highly recommended!!!

No longer in F. peretti's shadow
I read this book years ago. I have not been able to find it until now. It was the first book I read of R. Elwood and most certaintly not the last! I think this is by far his best work even outdoiing the later angelwalk series. It seems as F. peretti writes just a few books that everyone loves, people seem to overlook this one of many books by R. E. This should be given out at every salvation to show Christians what they are up agaist. This book along with a few others have changed the way I pray and see this world.

The Christening
I just started reading the Christening and I can't put it down. It shows that Satan is real and all around us.

Chilling memories
Like a previous reviewer, I first read this book when I was younger...in fourth grade, in fact.

I have always been a fan of monsters and horror films, so this book of short stories particularly held my interest.

Each story is interesting, imaginative, and unique. Although not as explicitly graphic as certain horror novels released today, this is definitely not a "children's book." The stories contain supernatural imagery and suspense that might not sit well with younger (< 10 years) readers. I particularly liked and was scared by "Precious Bodily Fluids" by Mario Martin, Jr. and found myself checking my basement for vampires. The other stories are equally compelling.

Unfortunately, it appears this book is no longer in print. I recommend purchasing it if you happen upon a copy...I know I will.

Exu Nazares on Monster Tales.
I first read Monster Tales when I was 8 years old, since then I had been looking for about 15 years , until I found it again. What a great collection of horror stories for kids. All the stories are quick reads with sufficient chill factors, but one story in particular stood out in my mind all those years. Wendigo's Child by Thomas F. Monteleone is by far worth the price of admission for this dark rollercoaster. Based on the Northwest Mythos of Wendigo(an avenging spirit that is part human-part animal), Wendigo's Child tells the tale of a boy named Marty who uncovers a strange artifact with horrifying results. Creepy illustrations by Franz Altschuler, and wicked introduction by Robert Bloch! If you can find this book ,buy it!

an unorthodox take on creation/evolution
Telling much more will spoil the discovery, but I CAN say that it is one of the first Christian fiction books I read that acknowledged the truth behind all God's possibilities. Many people will consider parts of it blasphemous, but then I LOVE a good debate!!!!

One of the finest SF collections
This is one of my favorite collections of science fiction stories. I had a copy of it in the 1970s, when it was first published, and I recently got around to replacing my copy.

If you enjoy the _Science Fiction Hall of Fame_ collections, you'll enjoy this one too. At the time of its publication, it was one of very few collections of all-new SF. And Robert Silverberg and Roger Elwood selected (almost) nothing but the best. (There are a couple I don't particularly care for, but at least none of them are real stinkers.)

There is, for example, Harry Harrison's "Run From the Fire," a great parallel-universe tale. There's Clifford Simak's bittersweet "The Ghost of a Model T," which just drips with nostalgia. There's R.A. Lafferty's "For All Poor Folks at Picketwire" (and if you know who R.A. Lafferty is, the mention of his name is all you'll need here). There's a full novella by Jack Vance.

There's also my personal favorite in the book, and one of my favorite SF short stories ever: George R.R. Martin's ". . . for a single yesterday." This is one of the most haunting pieces of fiction you're ever going to read. It takes place on a rural hippie commune after The Blast has destroyed the cities. The title is, of course, a line from the Kris Kristofferson/Fred Foster song "Me and Bobby McGee," which figures into the tale. I won't spoil it for you by telling you anything more; just read it. (It was memories of this particular story that led me to hunt down a used copy of this book in the first place.)

If you like good SF, scare up a copy of this collection. It's one of the best ever assembled.

Angelwalk Lives on
In this third installment of the legendary Angelwalk saga, Elwood centers on the angel Stedfast. The book really has no plot but that is one of its pros. It is a collection of stories but together. These stories are about different humans that Stedfast is sent to protect on earth. If you liked the first and second installments, I guarantee you'll like this one.

A haunting discovery of God, one step at a time...
Some may look at the "10" and scoff. Go ahead, because they obviously haven't read the story. Being a long-time fan of Elwood(particularly The Christening and Angelwalk sagas), I was surprised at the lack of enthusiasm I felt eyeing the excessively dull cover to this novel. But I gave it a chance anyway. With no exageration, I can say this was the most beautiful, compelling story of man's quest for God, I have ever had the pleasure of reading. As with C.S. Lewis, Elwood came from a background denying the existance, then embracing the discovery, of God in his own life. The story walks the reader through the mind and life of a lone being on a foreign planet, along the way drawing parallels in our own cynical lives. THIS BOOK IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR THOSE WHO ARE SICK OF THE NIHILISTIC, BLEAK WORLDS AUTHORS SOMETIMES PRESENT TO READERS!!! Elwood instead gives us the only light at the end of life's journey that is even able to sustain us.

A Touching and Horrifying Romance Novel
Wendy's Phoenix is possibly the best Christian romance novel I have ever read. That's because it isn't really a Christian romance novel. (In case you were wondering, I'm not a fan of Christian romance novels. I admit, I've read very few.)

Sure, on the surface it has all the trappings of a romance novel: successful woman with a tough exterior that covers her pained interior, a painful past that continues to haunt her, a handsome suitor that comes in the midst of tragedy.

But in Elwood's hands they become something else. They become parables of Christ's love for humanity. They become examples of forgiveness. And they also become set-ups for some bizarre and intriguing plot twists.

This is the first of two Steeple Hill Angelwalk books. Both of these titles (the other is Survival in the Wilderness) depend much more on plot and characterization than any of the other Angelwalk books. The Angelwalk series (especially the original trilogy) is based more on episodes and short stories that are tied together through a single observer. In Wendy's Phoenix, Elwood still uses the episodes to advance the plot, but this time in the form of flashbacks and characters testimonies. In fact, most of the book's plot is found IN the flashbacks. (This can be a bit confusing at first.)

What sets this far above you average "romance" novel, is the hard questions it asks. In the beginning of the book, the reader is subjected to some terrible examples of evil. (Some I even found hard to read.) The novel starts by examining the evils that go on in the world around us, through the eyes of Wendy, who, as a public defender, sees the victims of evil and at the same time the doers of evil. But the focus of the book shifts in part two, when the question asked seems to become more, "Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people?"

The characters and the plot found in Wendy's Phoneix are some of the best I've read in Elwood's writing. It's safe to say that Roger really shines when he is allowed to "stretch his wings" (so to speak). There's a lot of plot, character, and theology packed into this little book. I was expecting a simple romance helped along by angels in the background, carefully orchestrating things as a portrait of God's care for his creation. And that can be found, although it's hardly "simple". Instead, I found a dense book that is easy to read and is packed to the brim with spiritual lessons.

Recommended for readers who want thought provoking material that asks the hard questions.

Survival Behind Enemy Lines
Experience the life and death struggle of Stephen Bartlett as he attempts to aid the allies in the assassination of one of Hitler's elite. Elwood shows how, with God's help, we can accomplish things beyond our own strengths and capabilities, and how God strengthens us each step of the way.

ashes of paradise
Ashes of paradise was one of the most meaningful pieces of fiction literary I have picked up in some time. I found myself so full of love after reading this novel. Quite controversial for the times, or even today's times yet I found myself with a smile on my face with each page, filled with love. The books has not, for whatever reason, been rated and I found it an excellent read and have been ever since watching the book shelves awaiting the second in this supposedly trilogy, very anxiously awaiting I might add. Mr. Elwood put together an excellent literary piece, most excellent, in this book.

Ashes of Paradise
I just finished reading this book. It addressed several issues that I have faced and also some that needed answers. I expressly liked the way others were won to a deeper experience with the Lord and to having a better attitude about slaves and their fellow man. Love was expressed in the home, while teaching the daughter about the attitudes of the world. There are incidences involving Sojourn Truth and Mr. Abraham Lincoln. It brought out an impressive view of Louisiana and situations found there. It is written just prior to the Civil War. Would love to read a follow-up sequel, but, from the Epilogue at the end I get the feeling that regressing into the past history of "Dixie" was too much and that there might not be one. I would love to have the next book on Charity's life!

Hard to keep
I wrote a paper on this book for my English class in a secular college about 8 years ago and my professor immediately asked to borrow it. I still don't have it back. That is okay though, as I am sure she is sharing it with others. I could not put it down once I started reading it. I rank Elwood with Perretti, Bunn, Morris, and Lucado. A different style of writing, perhaps, but none the less spellbinding.

This book is absolutely intriguing and utterly outstanding.
I first read this book in high school, when a friend of mine let me borrow it. As I began to read this book, it immediately caught and held my attention. Because I was in school and had my studies to attend to I had to tear myself away from reading it numerous times. When I finally finished the book, I was hesitant about returning it to the friend who let me borrow it, but I did. I have been looking for this book every since then--that was nearly 10yrs ago. I am in a Christian Fraternity called Gamma Phi Delta. My Chapter (Eta Judges) is the 7th Chapter of the Fraternity established at Grambling State Univerity in Grambling, Louisiana on November 12th 1997 and I am the 8th and last Charter member of the Chapter (#8 of 8). My orientation name/"line name" is Solomon (after King Solomon in the OT).It was through one of my Frat. Brothers that I was led to this site and by the grace of Almighty God that I thought to look up this book and to find this book here. Though I have not yet bought it, I will and will reread it. I still remember what the book is like, the positive impact it has made in my life and what happened in the book. I encourage anyone and everyone to read it for personal enjoyment and Biblical and spiritual education and growth. I intend to share this book with my Frat. as soon as I finish reading it for the second, but not last time. God bless you all...=-).

Excellent: keeps your interest, while gets you thinking
Once I picked this book up I couldn't put it down. I immediately borrowed it from a friend, and went home and read it. I am not a reader of Christian fiction, but this is an exception - it gets you thinking.
