I am a storyteller in Fort Worth Texas and found this book absolutely facinating. Wonderfully and simply written in the voice of Jim Huntington. I used the story recently at a Library that was focusing on Alaska of Jim's brush with the wolves and the kids loved it. I noticed in the other reviews that a relative of Mr. Huntington had left a review of the book, Martha S. Barker. I would love to talk to Mr.s Barker about Jim. If she would contact me at storymantales@hotmail.com I would be honored. It's an adventure from beginning to end and a wondrful personal story, Worth the time.

Jim is my uncle and unfortunately he passed away a several years ago; I didn't know him as well as I would have liked but heard much about him from my mother. Sidney, Jimmy's brother; wrote "Shadows on the Koyukuk" an Alaskan Native's Life along the River by Sidney Huntington as told to Jim Rearden (you'll note he also did Jimmy's book as well); Alaska Northwest Books. another 5 star book and not just because they are relatives; you'll find this when you read them yourself.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. It is one that you will want to read over and over and you will never feel as though you have read it before. Full of real life adventure in the native bush. Wonderfully written.

Green Mountain Farm is one of my favorite books on county living. The book focuses not on "how-to" but rather on nature, eccentric characters, contented introspection, and concise philosophical musings. The book is a collection of essays describing a life that many of us dream about: leaving the city to create a happy and successful life in a beautiful countryside. Merrick writes in excellent prose, full of crystal-clear imagery, wit, and occasional humor, easily carrying the reader into his world.

Merrick converts the tedium, never-ending farm work, and other hardships of life on a remote farm into benefits. Even mistakes are fortunate. "We did everything wrong, but it turned out right." Perhaps this rosy view of such a life was mostly due to Merrick's outlook: "It's a matter of temperament, you see."

This book tells the story of a writer who settles in Vermont in 1934 with his family. It is filled with personal stories of adventures that the family had and the people that they met. Early in the book, an immigrant ski maker convinces the family to move up to the Northeast Kingdom. Merrick describes the early days of the ski industry, when people still wore homemade equipment on the slopes. He also describes his part in the 1930s survey of farming practices, contrasting his own experiences working his farm to supplement his writing income.

Daniel Boone is a man lost in legend, "Mythologised heyond recognition". His true story is certainly more incredible and indeed astonishing than anything fiction could dream up. Even in his own lifetime he was feted for his incredible abilities.

Boone's abilities were apparent from his earliest childhood in mid-eighteenth century pioneer America. He had an uncanny sense of direction and ability to find his way around. He kept moving west through Kentucky to Missouri and even went as far as Yellowstone Lake on one trip. Yet despite opening up vast new territories for new settlers he died without owning an acre of land. In that time he had worked with and fought against the Indians, served with the American's in the War of Independence, narrowly missing being captured, and seen at least two of his children killed before their time.

I loved this biography by Elliot. I felt he really stripped back the layers of myth, carefully weighing up different accounts and the veracity of them while telling his story. The result is a small insight into the private life of a private man as well as his amazing public acts. I often wondered if Diana Gabaldon read this biography when working on her Outlander series, or maybe she had a Daniel Boone-ish sort of character in mind to base her character of Jamie on when he reached America.

Though this text is out of print, it is possible to obtain one through the Amazon out-of-print services. The text takes one on a journey of the young and poor Angelo Roncalli -- who is incredibly gifted with wisdon from a very young age. Through his life and progression through the church, one can easily visualize and sense the kindness and humanity of this man, who eventually became John XXIII. A must read for Catholic and non-Catholic scholars.

A wonderful text on John XXIII, which leads us from his humble beginnings, and creates and establishes the very essence of the man he would become. This is truly a must read for Catholics and non-Catholics alike. A remarakble man and leader -- there is much to be learned from his life!

I bought this book because it has a nice layout and seemed to have all of the necessary facts on ABA-approved law schools. Having gone through the application process, I realize that this book falls flat on several levels. To start with, some of the data is incorrect. For example, almost all of the application fees listed are less that they actually are. Also, there is very little context about the schools. For example, what is a school known for? Is it a large, ultra competitive environment, does it pride itself on cooperation and close-knit atmosphere, or somewhere in-between? A prospective student can make assumptions from the data alone, but contextual information rounds out the data. Further, admissions are mostly made on GPA & LSAT scores but there are no grids or numerical breakdowns; there are only median values. My best advice is to go to the LSAC's website and review the online version of the "Official Guide to ABA-Approved Law Schools." This guide offers statistical data, school info, links to law schools, and data filtering tools so you can interactively track infomation relevant to you (e.g., your statistical chance of getting into a school based on your GPA & LSAT). Overall, it has a lot more to offer than the Barron's Guide.

Barron's Guide to Law School has become like my bible. I take it with me everywhere and could look at it for hours on end. I just recently decided that law school is definately for me, and this book has helped tremendously. It contains many details about each school, things you may not even really care about. It also contains a sample LSAT test which is very helpful. The book also lists schools by region and maps them so you know exactly where each school is, and so if you know you want to go to school in a certain region, you can find out what schools are nearby. This book is a must for anyone considering law school.

I simply can't imagine trying to navigate the law school selection and application process without this book. It would be a bargain at several times the listed price.
