The Testimony of a Changed Life
The story of Jim Eliot and his commrades is a must read for ministers and missionaries alike. It's a life changing perspective that describes the heart of this fine man. His commitment and service to God is chronicled in this fine work by his wife Elisabeth. Those who are intending to pursue a career in missions and or ministry must read this book. Just like basic training prepares our soldiers for battle, this book is a documentary of basic training for missionaries who wish to serve in the Army of God.

A Model for Modern Missionaries
Few books have impacted me as much as this "life and testament of Jim Elliot" written by his wife, Elisabeth. This is the story of an earthly (though not worldly) man with a heavenly mind. Jim Elliot was a man of passion and a man of prayer. This book chronicles his journey from childhood in Oregon to college days at Wheaton to the mission field of Ecuador where he eventually gave his life at age 28. Full of journal excerpts and personal letters, one gets to know this great man's heart. His struggles, his ambitions, his loves, his dreams - and his all-consuming passion for Christ and His kingdom - gripped my heart as a teenager. This man became my hero. If you want to know the man behind the motto "he is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose" this is the place to start. I highly recommend this book - especially to Christian teenagers who want to give 100% to Jesus Christ.

Challenging, Inspiring and Motivating!
This is a must read for all Christians who have any desire to know Christ and to offer their lives to him. If not, this book will definitely challenge you to do so. Shadow of the Almighty mainly consists of letters and journal entries Jim wrote while at college and while preparing and serving on the mission field. It represents a great example, not of a perfect man, but of a man who wanted to live his life fully for Christ, no matter what the cost. The main message is that to know Christ is to obey him, and that Christ is worth laying down anything and everything. Thus, Jim's famous words: "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." Jim is an inspiration and example to me as I prepare to serve as a missionary in some of the most unreached places on earth.

A wonderful mystery featuring an elderly Quaker sleuth
As a Quaker, I greatly enjoyed this book ... sort of Miss Marple the Quaker (member of the Religious Society of Friends), about an elderly woman who feels Led to help solve a murder involving her Meeting. My only quibbles are that the author tried a wee bit too hard to make Friends appear unusual ... e.g., writing such things as "The two Friends walked down the street," etc., which no one would ever say or think. (One of the tenets of our faith is that we do not pass judgment on others -- so we're known for fitting in and getting along, despite not drinking, swearing, dancing, etc. As such, we do not stand out that noticeably, and you would no more say "The two Friends walked down the street" than you would "There goes a Baptist!") Likewise, we have unprogrammed worship wherein we sit quietly, waiting for the spirit of God to touch us and often inspire us to share something with the group. Although outsiders call it silent worship, *WE* don't. Also, the main character complained so much about her arthritis that I thought it related to the case's solution ... In the real world, however short of the mark we may fall, we nonetheless strive to be thankful for all that we have, rather than whining about what we lack.

However, that's just quibbling -- and probably something with which only a Quaker would find fault. If you enjoy comparatively light mysteries (no profanity, sex, vulgarity, or fast-paced, high-level spy themes) with a Miss Marple type of elderly woman thrust into the role of sleuth) and would like a glimpse of the Quaker beliefs, you should greatly enjoy this book. I certainly did!

Curl up with this and a cup of tea
No blood and guts, no drooling perverts, no wisecracking cardboard characters -- just a really good mystery written with a careful eye and a sort of spare simplicity that's appealing and fun to read. Less discerning readers may find Elizabeth Elliot a bit pedestrian -- but, what do they know? I love the way Elizabeth applies her deep faith, as well as her mature and healthy skepticism, to solve the mystery. Put the kettle on the stove and lose yourself with this wonderful book.

A charming mystery with great personality.
I appreciated the information on the Quaker tradition, and that the heroine is not a super hero or private sleuth. She is an interesting person dealing with the modern world. I look forward to reading more about Elizabeth.

This book challenged and changed my life
This book cuts right to the chase for the Christian. Elliot puts forth the truth with a punch. I was personally challenged on how I live my life. As I read and reread this book it focused me on what is really important and that changed my life for the better. I refer to this book often and quote it more times than I can count. Excellent investment for any Christian wanting to grow and mature.

Discipline: The Glad Surrender
This is a really good book where Elisabeth Elliot draws from her own experience in surrendering to God. She speaks about how surrendering to discipline is something that will make life better rather than giving it all up. And like all of Elliot's books, it is incredibly well written.

Arctic Diplomacy: Canada and the US in the Northwest Passage
The book provides an excellent overview of the interaction between Canada and the US in the Arctic. Starting with a short preview of Northwest Passage exploration, the author details Canada's identification with the North and why it is psychologically important as a national ideal. She contrasts the psychological importance with the lack of definitive legislation, development and enforcement that would be required to make the ideal into reality. She discusses the difficulty of protecting Canadian sovereignty while cooperating with the US to maintain continental security during and after WWII. She discusses basic international law as it pertains to Northwest Passage diplomacy and gives a good indication of what the two neighbors feel, why they disagree, and how they can still cooperate to achieve common goals. In addition to providing an overview of Northwest Passage diplomacy it offers an interesting look at national identity and how two unequal but inextricably allied nations deal with disagreement. Pretty academic but an easy read with exhaustive footnotes, bibliography and appendices. Appendices include several small maps showing routes and a list of transits. My only complaint is, if you're looking for the one paragraph that explains what the current position of the two governments is regarding the Northwest Passage, it's not intuitive to jump to the bottom of page 149...but getting there is worth the effort!

No Graven Image by Elizabeth Elliot
This book is an awesome representation of missionary life. A young, unmarried, woman named Margarat is working as a Bible translator to the Quicha Indians in the mountains of Ecuador. Most of the action takes place in her mind, where she tells you about her previous ideas of missionary work. The end is astonishing and will leave you with a new view on how God works. This book makes you search your soul for what you believe and why. It draws you into the story line, as if you were actually in the mountains of Ecuador with her! I highly recommend it for anyone planning to go into missions or just with an interest in missions.

Life Changing Book
This book has changed my life. Since reading it, I have gained new insight in my walk with Christ and how to live.
I have a new appreciation for faith, happiness, and sorrow.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is just beginning or has been walking with God for quite some time. I have two children and I l feel new
enthusiasm and peace that I've never felt before when we are together. Buy this book, read it, and use it as a reference!

A wonderful look at the very real struggles Christians face
I am not quite finished with this book, but have thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. In the 270+ pages I have read, Mrs. Prentiss has shown an astounding ability to put into words the struggles that I believe are universal for men and women who desire to live out their faith in Christ, yet who are continually confronted with their flawed humanity, i.e., sin!

There is humor, seriousness, sadness--all the emotions one can imagine, since the book is designed to depict the different eras of a woman's life from age 16 onward, through courtship, marriage, and motherhood. I eagerly anticipate finishing the book, and then picking it up again and again as I go through my own life. I plan to have my teenage daughter read it, and will suggest it as a must-read to all my friends.

Excellant book! It will inspire and encourage every woman!
Stepping Heavenward is one of the most life impacting books I have ever read. Elizabeth Prentiss weaves a story which every wife and mother will recognize. She gives us a glimpse of the deeper life available in our everyday duties and encourages believers in Christ to rely on Him and grow in His love!

Worthy and helpful Evangelical essays
...I found these short Evangelical essays to be based in Biblical truths and geared toward the problems of human life and the human condition and, in some instances, prophetic messages about the particular evils of our time and society.
The little essays may be read as daily devotional pieces or, as I did, the book may be approached and read through in several settings.

Comfort in the Storm
I found this book about 7 years ago and have continually turned to it for comfort. I have given it as a gift over a dozen times and each reciever has found the same comfort. Perfect for a friend who cannot seem to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Elisabeth Elliot's approach is one of no nonsense.
She tells it like it is, yet gives hope.

EXCELLENT DEVOTIONAL
Elisabeth Elliot holds true to her style of communicating God's Word with extraordinary practicality and love. The articles are small, (perfect for devotional reading) and packed with truth. Will give you lots to think and pray about during the day.

This is definitely one of the better diet books, but....
Now, I am not overweight; however, I do watch my weight carefully because I don't want to become that way. Anyhow, having a weakness for sweets and a love of coffee, I've read various texts from various "experts" (generally, they're all part-right and part-wrong; but then, no one's perfect, right?) and chanced upon this book.

Dr. Abravanel is GREAT when it comes to describing people's types and what they crave and their basic dispositions. Basically, while we all have an adrenal gland, gonads, a thyroid, and a pituitary gland, each one of us is dominated by one particular gland and that causes us to behave a certain way and to have certain physical traits. Sounds crazy at first, but if you read the descriptions you can see people you know who definitely fit the bills. For instance, my dad looks like the A-type (adrenal gland dominant) guy who's overweight (yes, this book has illustrations of the different body types, both overweight and slim, so you can see which one you resemble the most); he loves a good drink; and he LOVES his steaks and fat and butter - ALL the things A-type folks do! Being personally a T-type (dominated by the thyroid, supposedly), I was definitely interested in what the good doctor had to say...

Here's where I have a couple of qualms I will share for you: The doctor says that if a person is unhealthy and/or overweight it's because their dominant gland is overworked. Thus, you need to let THAT gland rest and let ANOTHER gland at least temporarily "take over," if you will. OK, so far. However, for instance, he says caffeine will strain the thyroid gland -- I have yet to find conclusive evidence to back that up from anything I've read on the Web. He also says that coffee is OK for A-types. Think about it: Caffeine causes you to produce and release adrenalin. Where does adrenalin come from? The adrenal gland! He's contradicting himself a bit mite, eh?

Also, you might have trouble figuring out exactly which type you are. For instance, I myself have the personality and get the cravings of the T-type and yet have a physique closer to a P-type than a T-type (slim but not particularly defined and rather "boyish" than early thirty-ish). The doctor himself says in the book that you might have to see someone trained in his methodology to get that squared away, something you may or may not want to do.

So, yeah, the book's good in many respects; basically, every diet recommended for each type is healthy, and, as the author states, even if you mistakenly follow the wrong diet, it won't hurt you and you'll probably lose the excess weight anyhow, although you won't remove the underlying problem. But, by the same token, there's a couple of things, which I've mentioned, which don't seem to make sense.

Body Type is the Key
Ignore the uninspired title and buy this book because it works. I have used it for years and given away so very many copies that Dr. A should give me a commission. He has authored other books, but this is the one to buy for your lifetime nutrition.

The single most identifier of body type in this book is "where a person gains weight." Where you gain weight indicates which gland in your body has taken over the controls and is the reason you are looking at extra weight on your frame---be it ten pounds or one hundred.

In all honesty, the mirror does not lie and Dr. A has done a considerable amount of research to validate his findings. Dr. A is a real doctor and the diet is healthy--no starvation or lack of essential vitamins.

You will find that once you do the body type diet, the lifetime nutrition guidelines for your body type are something you actually crave because you'll feel better when you follow them (not to mention maintain your weight).

Finally! The answer on "How to Feed My Body"!
Here's the manual on how to feed your body and make it run efficiently and with a happier outlook. I finally understand how to truly eliminate fatigue and cravings! The weight loss is just an added bonus. The explanations describing each body-type make it easy to understand not only your own body, but the cravings and weight problems loved ones.

I have recommended this book to many friends and relatives who are ALL finding success.

Here's an additional little tip - when making changes to your diet, try only one meal at a time for about a week. Example: Begin by changing your breakfast habits. Get successful at it for at least 5-7 days. Then try changing your lunch habits for 5-7 days. Then dinner. It's much less stressful to change things a little at a time. It also gives you time to develop eating strategies and menus.

Try it! You'll feel great....REALLY!

Not a quick-read, but worthwhile reading
Every chapter of this book needs to be pondered. It does not read like a novel--and should not--but each chapter made me eager to read the next, so applicable to contemporary life are the author's insights. The way the author correlates passages of the Bible with life experiences and principles, makes sense. Thank you.

Learning to be woman of God...
The book "Let me be a Woman" by Elisabeth Elliot is a biblical revelation for Christian woman. The author states, very humbly, her convictions which are scripturally correct and completely in-line with the word of God. It exposes the lies woman of the Church have allowed the world fool them with. The book explains how woman are to be submissive first unto God and secondly unto to their husbands.
It is not demeaning towards woman or in any way old-fashioned. Elliot herself is an example of proverbs 31 woman. She is not a weak woman, but rather a strong outspoken Christian woman. She admonishes woman with tenderness and love behind each word.
I cannot recommend a better book for woman who are truly seeking God, and honestly wiling to give him their all.

A Refreshing Reminder Of Woman's Creation & Role
In an age when women, especially women in the church, search, flounder, and grow frustrated with discovering who God created us to be, the role He is requiring of us, and how we are to relate to men, especially our spouses, this book gives direction in a manner neither oppressive nor offensive. Elisabeth Elliot, through loving letters to her daughter, allows us the opportunity to find the heart of our Creator in a way that inspires and plants desire within us. I came away from reading this book with a fresh longing to be all - nothing less and nothing more - than my God designed me to be. I encourage every Christian woman, whether 12 or 99 years of age, to read this book and allow Elisabeth Elliot's knowledge of the Word to shape who you are in Christ.

Buy a copy of this book for your daughter!
By the end of the first chapter in this book I felt like chearing. As a young teenager, this book let me know that it IS okay to be a woman like God designed me to be. Elisabeth Elliot did a wonderful job writing this book - she's funny and serious and gets her point across through both styles of writing. Now I'm in my late teens, have read this book several, several times, and will take it to college with me so that I can continue to read it. I'm so glad that my mom encouraged me to read this. Out of all the books she ever wanted me to read, this one is in the top 5 list of books that have affected my life the most. My daughters will read this when they reach their teen years, and I hope many other mothers will buy this book for their daughters as well. At the close of the book, I wanted to chear "Let Me Be A Woman!" In my early teens, it was so important and such a relief to realize that how I was made was the way GOD wanted me.
