Enhanced with a travel guide to mound sites
It is estimated by archaeologists that there were between 15,000 and 20,000 Native American mounds in Wisconsin, of which at some 4,000 still remain today. These mounds range from simple swellings of earth to elaborate effigy mounds sculpted into the shapes of birds, animals, and other forms. Indian Mounds Of Wisconsin offers a comprehensive overview of these Native American earthworks and addresses the questions of when were they constructed, who built them, and for what purpose. Accessibly written and highly recommended for North American archaeology and Native American studies reference collections, as well as for the non-specialist general reader, Indian Mounds Of Wisconsin is enhanced with a travel guide to mound sites that can be viewed by the general public (including many in local, county, and state parks); photographs and line drawings; a Wisconsin archaeological chronology; effigy mound forms in selected counties; extensive chapter notes; bibliography for further study, and a "user friendly" index.

now in VB.NET - and for version 1
I reviewed the orginal version of this book which was in C#. I've been lucky enought ot get my hands on the new VB.NET edition and it is even better than the original. I am more used to VB as it is, and I spent quite a lot of time translating some of the code snippets in the original, but now I don't have to! The book has changed a bit, it looks better than the first edition, and it is now completely 1.0 compliant. I've used the first book a lot, it's told me more or less everything I've needed to know. If you need to know about web services and you prefer VB then this is the only book you'll need!

An Important Contribution to Mental Health Literature
This book will open your eyes to problems that the world is dealing with in the mental health field. Issues such as depression, schizophrenia, sexual abuse, and substance abuse are seen differently when Western nations read about third world countries. While Americans are concerned about which medicine or therapy to take for their mental health, the third world countries are trying to get any help they can. A recommended book for any library.

Good for solid understanding
Together with Professional C# Web Services, also from Wrox, these books will give you a solid base to really understand Web Services and Remoting. The basics are quite simple but you will also learn some useful advanced topics. I've always liked the Wrox style of writing, I think it's easy to read and follow the code examples. The only criticism is the number of authors. Some smaller parts are repeated and the style is not always consistent.

This book is for EXPERIENCED programmers
I read the book several times. I did some of the examples. The examples worked with no changes necessary. On the [web page], the book has an errata list, which is pretty small. The source code for C# and VB are on the wrox website. This book is for EXPERIENCED programmers. Don't even try to read it if you have no prior knowledge of web services.

The book has an excellent introduction to ASP.NET for web services. It probably is worth just going over the first two chapters to get a flavor of web services. Word of caution, I downloaded the VB samples, and they were a bit buggy. If you are a C# developer, the code in the book was fine. The VB code was not...

Comprehensive coverage
The first few chapters teach you the basics, most of which I knew already, but it is the later chapters which are really great. The chapter on SOAP security (a subject about which I confess I knew very little) taught me everything I am ever likely to need or want to know about that subject. There's also loads of great examples to get you going. To sum up - it's great!

Allows the Goy into the Unknown
This book seems to be written FOR the secular world, yet written TO other non-religious Jews. This is a wonderful approach because it allows one to enter the underground as "a Jew." The writer seems to want to express his findings with his other lost brothers, thereby giving the reader an indepth and close look inside the Jewish culture, un-edited for the world. (Hope that makes sense.)

In addition, the writer is extremely honest and non-judgemental, providing the reader only with "facts" about his experiences which allows the reader to draw their own conclusions...

I have read SEVERAL books about Judaism, as I am converting soon, and although this was not on my "reading list," I believe this book has been the most insightful and helpful in painting a vivid picture of my new family and that without bias.

This is NOT a theological book... it is a book of heritage in today's modern world.

PS
Captivating and an easy read... I finished this book over two days... Worth this short amount of time!

It has its own odd fascination
I am a reform Jew with little background knowledge of chasidism, although I've read The Chosen and always read the Chabad periodic supplements in The Forward. When I read this book, however, I found myself quite fascinated by it, and a week or two after finishing it, I took the unprecedented (for me) step of reading it again. There is a great sense of authenticity in the descriptions, and also of affection for the many different types of chasidim the author met. It made me wish that I also spoke Yiddish, so that I might have similar experiences. I highly recommend the book to Jewish readers. There is something in it that tugs at the soul.

A very real look at the Chassidic lifestyle
Sometimes books about Chassidism written by "outsiders" have that outsider feel to them. This excellent book is different. I couldn't put it down. The author travels to many different Chassidic and Orthodox Jewish communities and gives his honest impressions and experiences, in a kind and vastly entertaining way. You come away with an understanding and a "feel" of what these guys in the black coats (a generalization, I know) are all about, and can't help but share the author's respect for the wholesomeness of the Chassidic lifestyle. He predicts, in the end of the book, that in 50 years, the only Jewish life that will be viable will be Chassidic. In other words, "he has seen the future and it is Chassidic". This despite his admission that he is not an "observant" Jew. Since Moshiach (the righteous redeemer who will be spiritual leader and teacher for the whole world) is about to be revealed to us all, the author's prediction may take place sooner than he thinks.......

Book is a little light in real information...
This book was a little light in practical information, as could be expected for a pre-beta book. If it were my money, I would wait and buy the MS Press Introduction to .Net My Services coming out this spring, since it will be based on the latest spring code release of the .NET My Services SDK. Hailstorm, or .NET My Services, does sound like a great idea, and I am looking forward to finding out more when the beta SDK goes public. That code will probably be more useful to a developer than the code in this book.

Great Geek Stocking-Stuffer - Six Holiday Stars
Imagine a personal profile (personal database) with your mail, calendar, contacts, application settings, wallet and eight other services plus an unlimited number of web services done by third parties that is maintained centrally by Microsoft as a completely open platform for any certified web services developer to use for authentication, user setup, communications routing, chat, payment authorization and execution, etc. - a giant Mrs. Gates cookie to replace all others! That's HailStorm.

An alpha release called HailStorm in a Box, or HSiaB, is available now for developers wanting a head start. HSiaB runs only on your LAN with your HS server doing the work of the future Microsoft server. It's free on the Microsoft web site. HS is all implemented in SOAP and XML of course. HSiaB requires Windows 2000 and SQL 2000 and each of these is free in a trial version from Microsoft as well.

This is bleeding edge stuff and the name "in a Box" is reminiscent of the early (1994) exciting days of browsers when many of us got "Internet in a Box" from Spyglass, the holder of the first Mosaic commercial license. HSiaB is not a revolutionary event like Mosaic, but it is very significant.

The book is a quick 203-page guide to HSiaB with plenty of coded examples. This is great fun for the serious geek even if you hate the name Microsoft. You can pick it up and finish it in one sitting since the code can be comprehended without actually running it. Installing HSiaB (fully explained in the book) and running the code will give hours more of fun. Think of something so new that you actually do some setups from a command line. Bill must have hacked this together himself. Way to go, Bill!

Imagine getting excited about something like this during the holidays. I must be sick. I picked it up at 5:30 AM this morning and could not put it down.

Too difficult
Without doubt, this is the worst textbook I ever had the misfortune to read.

I used it for a rushed 1st year dynamics course, and found the book utterly useless. The concepts are scattered and are introduced using complicated mathematics, some of which is beyond 1st year level. Even simply trying to read through the verbal explanations is near impossible for beginner students, simply because of the depth of knowledge required to do so.

The problems, while plentiful, are simply too difficult. Original thinking is one thing, these problems require something else entirely. I realise, of course, that textbooks must be challenging in order to maintain academic standards, but this book goes too far, to the point where students end up discouraged from the subject simply because the concepts are so difficult.

While I maintain the greatest respect for Mr Beer, as I am sure that he is a brilliant engineer (his book is testament to that), the text is simply too in-depth. For future editions, I recommend that he go through the book and greatly simplify both the language and the problems.

Until this book is simplified, I recommend the Hibbler Dyanmucs text to any other students out there.

World funest class
If you ever have pleasure in taking this class, procede to the nearest gun shop and pick a fight with billy. He will know what to do. You engin-i-nerd.

Very solid and important text
Very few books provide solid material like this one (Meriam's is an excellent one too). In fact I have become interested in mechanics after I was Introduced to this text for the 1st time in 1984. Recently, I started to collect and work all the editions of this book. This text requires a skilful instructor that can present the material in a way worthy of this text. please do not hate this text if you really want unsurpass knowledge in mechanics, because there are many "engineering mechanics" texts around you that teach nothing.
