A whole "new" cosmos
It took me a few attempts at reading this book to finally get through it, but now I am filled with new thoughts and a new frame of reference for lots of different issues. Lars is engaging and sometimes intellectually challenging, but not overbearing. His personal anecdotes and love of his subject bring a balance to the fine-tuned arguements. If you have ever felt that you know there is something wrong with an argument or a political stance, but you don't know exactly what, Lars will let you know in detail what the "something" is. It is a wonderful feeling to be relieved of those lingering doubts. His knowledge and perspective on traditional homosexuality in Africa is refreshing and a highpoint of the book. His story is pretty good too.

A surprisingly engaging account of homelessness
I don't often read non-fiction, but I was enchanted by Travels with Lizbeth by Lars Eighner. It's about three years in the life of a homeless man and his dog. Before being on the streets he was a writer/mental health worker (he wrote gay porn, among other things, to make money). His style is really remarkable-mannered and wry. It's as though he were educated at Oxford and one day found himself on the streets of Austin, TX without any prospects to speak of. His adventures are poignant, funny, tragic, and even occasionally sexy. You'll walk away with an appreciation for a category of homelessness, the situationally homeless, that often gets overlooked. We're always quick to categorize people on the streets as either: substance abusers, mentally ill, or simply homeless by choice. But some people just lose it. Eighner loses it, but ultimately makes the most of it. When I finished the book, I just wanted to send him money in case his luck had changed again

an entertaining, informative read
I live in Austin and so I am familiar with a lot of the places mentioned in the book. Austin is currently (and was becoming at the time of publication) an economically prosperous city with it's much touted high-tec industries and growing affluence. Of course not everyone benefits from the growing economy and this book shows that there are some that do not benefit at all. The experiences of living on the streets of Austin and the southwest with a dog are told with great humor and wit. The fact that this book is very well written suggests that Lars Eighner doesn't fit the usual homeless stereotype of being ignorant, uneducated and useless to society. In fact in the book Eighner mentions having regular job before his circumstances changed. It does make one wonder how many other people are out there who go through similar experiences in life. anyway, this book is definitely worth a read.

A humble favorite
I am rereading this novel for the 6th time, and I must admit that its over-the-top portrayals of gay life in Central Texas are too much to believe. Yet, this novel really shows that without the many parts of our gay community - the construction worker, the barfly, the imperial court, and the many other types - we would not be able to make a difference in our world.

I would recommend this novel for anyone who wants a simple laugh, a gay novel without the too-political overtones (though they are present at many times), or a chance to find a good drag name. As unbelievable it may have seemed at times, so many parts of it were the truth in our lives; gay people do form close knit communities and when we all get it at the same time, great and fantastic(al) things are bound to happen.

A comedic gay adventure, with unforgettable characters.
This is a truly funny book, set in a reality where drag queens rule territories like mafia kingpins. The characters are unforgettable, and the action is fast-paced. An enjoyable read.

A studly romp through Texas and Oklahoma
Not much sex, but a starnge array of characters that are well developed...oops, fiction-wise and other. A nice read, some of the better contemporary gay fiction available.

It's Got A Use....And I LIKE That Use!
Lars Eighner's work is really fairly literate for one-handed reading. Some of the material is looking a bit dated in the light of safer sex, the Net and other "gifts" of our time, but the overall premise is sound. If hot college boys gettin' it on do the job for you, grab this book in one hand, kick back and relax, and enjoy the diversion. It's the intelligent alternative to most of the stroke fiction out there.
