A GREAT REFERENCE FOR "AW'S" POST-COURTNEY YEARS
If you have been a fan of this serial within the past two decades, you will undoubtedly enjoy "Another World: The 35th Anniversary Celebration." However, Poll's treatment of the earlier years (what I call the Jacquie Courtney era, 1964-75) pales in comparison with her coverage of recent "AW" history. Artwork is sorely lacking in this part of the book, which is criminal. Recent "AW" junkies will never get a feeling for the distinct tone of the show before its 1975 expansion. We see no photos of Carol Roux, Audra Lindley, Joe Gallison, Jordan Charney and other early stars of the show. Did anyone consider buying "Daytime TV" archive photos for this section? Also missing is the fascinating behind-the-scenes history of the show (e.g. the Reinholt-Dwyer-Courtney firings), which, of course, shaped the future direction of the show. Finally, not to be a stickler, but the "comprehensive cast list" contains several omissions (e.g., DeAnn Mears as Cybil Harak, Ilene Kristen as Madeline Thompson, Carla Borelli as Reena Bellman Cook, Ben Hammer as Striker Bellman, etc.). Overall, however, Poll does a commendable job with capturing snapshots of a hugely panoramic subject.

Another World is a total class act, unlike any other!!!
I have watched AW for 27 years. I work hard and like most people, have little free time to myself. AW is something I ALWAYS make time for. I am so upset that it has been cancelled. I won't watch any other soaps, I'm not even watching NBC anymore. There are save AW pages on the net, fans are writing letters and emails to the networks, Proctor & Gamble, and to newspapers and talk shows to show our support. Get involved and help us save our show. If not, at least we are voicing our extreme displeasure for being overlooked in the interest of grasping for the money of immature viewers. Last time I checked, I was the consumer! How did we go from baby-boomers to generation X? How did our turn get skipped? I am sure I will treasure this book, it's a shame that the history is ending like this.

"Another World", my escape from reality has been cancelled
The 35th Anniversary Celebration of Another World Memorial Book is wonderful. I received a copy for my birthday and was completely thrilled with the quality of the writing and photographs. I have ordered another copy as a surprise gift for my mother.

I can't believe how many times my mother and I said: "Do you remember that?" or "look how young so and so is that picture"

As you can tell I am a die-hard fan of the program, and I was outraged and frustrated over the recent cancellation of my family's favorite television show. According to a source in New York, it has been implied that NBC Inc. feels that there has been little concern raised from fans over the devastating news. I beg to differ. Why would so many fans across North America be so viligent in saving "Another World" through rally's, polls, and petitions if we did not care?

"Another World" has been a terrific source of entertainment for my family for 33 years. My mother started to watch AW in high school. She weaned me on the program. I am sure that I uttered the two "Cory" matriarchs names instead of Mommy and Daddy as my first words. The show has never ceased to entertain us. We all work full time, and look forward to relaxing by watching the taped show every evening after dinner. Over the last few years we even converted my father. He has been well trained and versed in the various plots and schemes of the good, bad, and the ugly of "BAY CITY", and he too is now among the "enchanted" "Another World" fans.

I do not understand why a show as poorly written, cheaply filmed and acted in as "Sunset Beach" will remain on the air, while a quality program with brilliantly written plots and storylines is taken away from its loyal viewers. Not only does the show employ the best actors on daytime, it excels in set, wardrobe and makeup execution. We are never bombarded with story lines that "go on forever" or with characters that "talk" to themselves. Nothing aggravates me more than a program that continually "rehashes" storylines everyday. Die hard viewers know what's going on, we do not need to waste half the show filling us in on what we already know. "Another World" has never done this to us-unlike other programs such as "Sunset Beach" or the painfully outdated "Days of our Lives".

If NBC Inc. refuses to wake up and keep "Another World" on the air, "someone" else must realize the ecomomic and emotional value of this show, and "pick" it up. I hope for the sakes of everyone involved in the production of "Another World" that another network succeeds in doing so. It would be a great loss not to be able to "laugh, cry, and yell" at our favorite characters everyday.

Please do what you can to keep "Another World" alive. To those of you at NBC Inc., as Shania Twain would say, "DON"T BE STUPID", keep the show on. "Where there's supply and demand there's a way". I'm sure of it. I pray that I'll be watching the show with my kids, and grand-children far into the future.

Here's to another 35 years "AnotherWorld". You ALL are the best. Thank you for many years of fashion tips and frequent escapes from the sometimes boring reality of normal day to day life of work, work, work.

Sincerely,

Stephanie K. Boyle "Loyal Another World Fan"

A reflection on today's political leaders
This book is one of the Top 10 best war novels of all time. Webb's experience as a platoon commander in Vietnam makes him expertly qualified to comment on the gap that existed between the "haves" and the "have-nots." His combat experiences are thinly veiled through the eyes of LT Hodges, a main character in the novel. The enlisted Marines in this book are based on the farmers, coal miners, drop-outs, immigrants and the lower class in general who fought and died in the war. The quote at the beginning of the book, from a General to a war correspondant, accurately depicts the gap in society that was created by LBJ's draft laws. The draft laws were full of loopholes that the middle and upper class were only too eager to exploit. Webb uses "Senator" Goodrich, an Ivy League dropout and a disabled infatryman, as an anti-hero to explain the war to the privilaged few who decided to protest the war from thousands of miles away. His epic quote of " How many of you are going to get hurt in Vietnam? I didn't see any of you in Vietnam. I saw dudes, man. Dudes. And truck drivers and coal miners and farmers. I didn't see you. Where were you? Flunking your draft physicals? What do you care if it ends? You won't get hurt." to a peace rally at Harvard is one the most gripping paragraphs in context of the civilian protests of the Vietnam War. Webb has shown that the college students, the draft dodgers and the morally weak deserted the country in it's time of need. The United States used the underprivaleged to fight a stupid war. How would the war have turned out if a few senator's sons, or a few sons of prominent businessmen were KIA in Vietnam? How many lives could have been saved if this occurred? As Mr. Goodrich eloquently states in the novel," These people have no sense of country. They have no sense of obligation. Well, so be it. If they are willing to accept the benefits of this society- such as a Harvard education- the they should also accept the burdens." A fascinating look into the souls of the forgetten men who were willing to fight for no other reason than brotherhood. They didn't fight for the US, they didn't fight for the society- they fought for themselves, and they often paid the price in blood. Mr. Webb- thank you for such a wonderful novel. It helped see what my father had to endure as an Army infantrymen in Vietnam.

A Heartbreaking Classic
I've read Gustav Hasford's "The Shorttimers," and Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried." Both are excellent books and I heartily recommend them, but neither I think can compare to James Webb's classic "Fields of Fire."

Webb's book is from the James Jones school of realism. The book has the stinging ring of authenticity and no wonder, Webb was a Marine officer in Vietnam himself and won the Navy Cross, a Silver Star and two Bronze Stars so he definitely knows of what he writes.

But this isn't just a book written by an officer about officers. His portraits of the enlisted men are just as real and are full blooded characters. Some are tough, mean and unlikeable, but hey, that's real life for you.

And just like real life, you'll find yourself bonding and getting close to these characters and when some are killed, you are affected.

Be warned: "Fields of Fire" isn't a happy story. The ending is tragic but given the setting of the story, it's entirely appropriate.

Mr. Webb has done himself and the Marines who served in Vietnam a great honor.

Semper Fi Mr. Webb.

Right on.
The thing I most like about Fields of Fire is the emphasis it puts on showing how things in Vietnam operated. I've read other pieces about the war where the author takes a somewhat trippy approach and dwells on a few enlisted men doing and experiencing surreal, terrible things. I've enjoyed those kinds of stories from a literary perspective, but they don't really give much insight into what was going on. Webb ventures beyond the viewpoint of some prototypical disoriented recruit and shows more of the actual military operations: what it was like for the lieutenants, how Marine platoons were organized and run, what the day-to-day procedures were.

True, Webb's characters don't have the depth of some. He's working with an ensemble cast, and he's trying to get a lot of information in. If you're looking for a character study, you might try Kent Anderson's Sympathy For the Devil and its sequel Night Dogs, which do just the opposite of Fields of Fire: follow a single character before, during, and long after the war, without a lot of attention to sequence, context, or minutiae. But I'd have to say Fields of Fire is stronger: the ensemble is diverse, and none of the characters are stereotypical or even flat. Likewise, Webb's prose is not perfect, but he never holds forth.

One other book that goes well with Fields of Fire is The Nightingale's Song, by Robert Timberg. Among other things, Timberg writes about Webb's life and what went into Fields of Fire. But this is an excellent book even without a counterpoint or a companion piece.

Was amazed with the reality and the action through the book!
"Say Goodnight, Gracie" is probably one of the best books I have ever read. This heartfelt story of to best friends who have known each other for all of the 17 years of thier lives is one that will surely win you over as one of your favorites! Let me give you a little taste of the book. It starts out in a town on the out skirts of Chicago where 1 young dancer( Jimmy Wolff) and 1 young actress (Morgan, narrator), both struggling to have careers in the city. Both go through good times and bad, when suddennly an accident has taken Jimmy's life and Morgan must learn to cope without him. Thanks to her aunt, mother and Jimmy's mother, it looks as though she will be just fine! I suggest this book to you because I have read it my self and believe me it is by far the best book I have ever read in my life. Both Jimmy and Morgan are compelling and loveable characters! I sure hope this book gets a lot of publicity because absoloutly should. I recomend you go to the nearest library and check this book out right NOW!!!!!!!

A Wonderful Story about a Dear Friendship
I highly recommend this book! The friendship and love that Morgan and Jimmy possessed was so grand. Whenever Jimmy drove his car somewhere, I would be afraid to read on, because he is supposed to get killed by a drunk driver. I couldn't stop crying after Morgan heard that Jimmy had been killed. She lost herself after Jimmy's death and had so many people to help her through it. She just hadn't realized it till afterwards, when she gets herself together. This is truely a well-written book! I'd definately read it again soon!

heartfelt and touching
Though some of the dialogue may be a bit of a stretch, considering that the 2 principal characters are 17 year-olds, this book is an extremely touching portrait of a lifelong friendship. Morgan's grief and depression at the death of her friend is the most heartbreakingly real portayal of such that I've seen in YA literature. It's her recovery from these, her ability to begin to grow beyond the tragedy of circumstance, that makes this a truly touching piece of work. Being a whole person, this book tells me, is not finding a secure place and holding onto it so tightly that nothing ever changes; rather, being a complete person means embracing the fact that, no matter how painful it may be, the circumstances of our lives change. Deaver manages to find sympathy for Morgan as she experiences growth-through-loss without begging us to feel sorry for her. The book's last scene is as poignant and moving as anything written this decade.

Imagination 101 - a timeless gift for kids & adults!
I first discovered this book over 12 years ago when it was only available in hard cover while I was running the young readers section of a bookstore. We only carried one copy but after I had read the book myself I began recommending it to people who wanted something "really special" to give to children. Soon we had to keep 2-3 copies on the shelf to accomodate our customers. I have to admit I gushed about this book...it's one of the finest explorations of imagination I have ever run across (and since I have a personal library of over 10,000 books *besides* all the others I've read, I feel that I have a good perspective! ). This was the first 'big' children's book that I read aloud to my own children (who where then four and two). They were enthralled. We read a chapter a night and the one time I was too sick to read, they *insisted* on *two* chapters the next night! I'm so glad that this book is now available in paperback so that more people can enjoy it...but I'm glad that I have my copy in hard cover because I know that it will be read many more times over the years! (hey! I've read it more than five times already myself!!) This is a classic that is suitable for all ages...except perhaps infants!

Fabulous read-aloud for children up through high school!!
I read a chapter in this book each night for months to a cabin full of cynical, talented 17-year-old girls. And they loved it - and weren't ashamed to admit it. It's one of the few children's books I will recommend to any friend (I'm 25) and one that I love re-reading after enough time has passed that I've forgotten how beautifully worded it is. There's plenty of description AND action, and a moral thrown in as well (but not grossly). I can't believe this beautiful woman with an incredible voice and acting talent can write this well. She does!!!

Should be a 6...
I absolutely loved this book and would have given it 6 stars if I could. The woman who was once Mary Poppins and taught the world to believe in fantasy and the power of their imaginations has done it again. This book sends a wonderful message about keeping our imaginations fresh and the power that the youngest among us have to enter into Whangdoodleland - a place that disappears when people stop believing in it.

Three rather ordinary children ranging in age from 7 to 13 happen across Professor Savant. He agrees to give them lessons on how to reach the magical place. What he is really teaching them though is how to see the world in a different way. They really do reach the land of the Whangdoodle and have many adventures while learning a lot about themselves along the way.

This book is filled with factual information as well. Only one small piece has become out of date, concerning DNA research, since the book was written. The rest is solid and very informative for intermediate grade students. I have seen this book used for literature study in a 5th grade classroom and it worked marvelously.

Why 5 stars?:
This book should have no problem holding the attention of 9-12 year olds though it is quite lengthy. The themes of using our imaginations and being creative are ones that are important for every age group. As well, there is lots of factual information in this book. It will serve well as a discussion starter and in literature study groups (not to mention it is also an AR book).

A 12-year-old reader
I really enjoyed this book. It's all about a fourteen-year old girl named Julie Weiss, a kinda non-practicing Jewish girl who lives in Vienna, Austria, in 1938. Julie's family aren't serious practicers of the Jewish faith, so Julie doesn't really seem to think about being Jewish until one day, Hitler seems to be everywhere! Radio broadcasts, newspaper articles, even books about Hitler, like "Mein Kampf," his story. But suddenly Julie's life seems to be taken over by this man. Her mother, sensing the war ahead, commits suicide, and her brother wants to escape to Palestine, where Jews would be peaceful and safe. Finally, Julie's father sends Julie to America to live with her aunt and uncle in New York. I thought this was a good book, but it was missing something. I think it would be more powerful if Julie had stayed in Vienna, and maybe had to go into hiding, like Anne Frank, or was sent to a concentration camp but survives to tell the tale, and doesn't go to New York until maybe the very end of the book. But no, Julie goes to New York halfway through the book, and gets involved in acting, which I though took away from the real plot of the story. Overall, it was a good book, but if I would've written it a little differently.

one eye laughing the other weeping
This is the story of Julie Weiss who is in Vienna, Austria when Hitler takes over. When he takes over her mom kills herself, but before she does she gets her daughter and son a way to New York to live with her Anut Clara. Before it is time to leave her brother disapears and she goes alone.
When she gets there and finds out her aunt is an actor she gets a part as Wendy in Peter Pan. Soon after that she is offerd a part in a movie, which makes her think about life in Vienna and changes the way she thinks about life.
This is a good book. Its a real easy read. I was dissapointed that it did'nt say a lot about World War II.

Possibly the best Dear America book so far.
I was fortunate enough to obtain an advanced edition of this wonderful book. Barry Denenberg is a wonderful author. He brought a wonderfully human viewpoint to this tragic time in history. Twelve-year-old Julie Weiss is the daughter of a wealthy Jewish couple in 1938 Vienna. She has a comfortable life, until Hitler's army invades Austria. Her family is the target of violence, and her mother sinks into depression, eventually commiting suicide. In spite of the bleakness of the first half the book, there is hope in the second half. Julie's father, desperate for her safety, arranges for her to go to New York City to live with her aunt and uncle, but decides to stay behind and help others. She is full of loneliness and despair at first, but finds comfort in her relatives and in a career in acting. I highly reccomend this to historical fiction fans. The author did an excellant job of bringing the time period to life.

Outstanding book for young girls
As a child, this was a book that I read over and over again. Now that I have a daughter of my own, I want to share this with her. Julie Edwards ( Andrews) is not only a fabulous actress and singer, she is also a terrific author. This is a story about a young orphan girl trying desperately to find her place in the world. She lives in a large girls school but she is very lonely and wants more than anything to have a family of her own. In her daily wanderings, she discovers a little cottage that she decides to make her own. This story is charming and heartwarming in every respect as we travel with Mandy on heradventure to find a place, and a family of her own

Mandy
I am a student at Waldron Mercy Academy. (ADH)
The story takes place in a stone orphanage close to the woods. In the orphanage lives a 10-year-old girl named Mandy. Secretly Mandy's heart pounds for a family and a place to call home. One day Mandy follows her heart and travels in the woods. There in the woods she finds a cottage and a little garden. Mandy loves it so much that she dreads leaving. When she gets back to the orphanage she swore herself to secrecy. Soon Mandy falls terribly ill and is forbidden to leave the orphanage. When
no one was around Mandy sprints towards the cottage. Outside Mandy hears loud crashing thunder and is so sick she can't even move. The only person who can reach her is a secret admirer.
This book kept me reading from page 1 to end. You should defiantly read this book.

:)
--Ten-year-old Mandy lives at a girls' orphanage and wants her own family and own home. Her latter wish is granted when she discovers a small cottage in the woods behind the orphanage. Over most of the year, Mandy fixes up the cottage and plants a lovely garden, but when she suddenly falls ill at the cottage one night, no one can find her. Or so she thought: Mandy actually has a good friend whom she doesn't even know about. --This is a rare type of book: it was sweet yet still lively, which is something which is both unusual and great to read. --Marisa

Great book for novices!
Though I've eaten a lot of Indian food in restaurants, I'd never cooked Indian food before I bought this book. Nor am I an especially enthusiastic cook. I found Ms. Sahni's book informative (but not overwhelming) and very easy to follow. I've now tried five or six of the recipes and also made usli ghee and paneer--all came out perfectly. The most amazing thing to me was that when Ms. Sahni says, "Let this cook for 15 minutes, then it will start to spatter a little...", that's exactly what happens, practically to the second.

From one novice to many others who may be reading this, be sure you get all your spices and other ingredients measured and ready to go before you start cooking, because often things go in quick sequence. In the ingredient lists, I've also drawn brackets around the spices and other ingredients that go in at the same time so I can measure the group into one bowl and also have a quick reference for the stages of cooking without having to reread the narrative in the steps.

The only thing that has tripped me--and this is slight--is that when hot water is required during cooking, it's stated in the steps but not in the ingredient list. I'm now in the habit of writing it in the ingredient list so I'll know I'll need it ahead of time.

I have a couple of other Indian cookbooks that are also very good, but I keep going back to this one. Great book!!

A TRUE 'CLASSIC '
I have been a fan of Julie Sahni's Classic Indian Cooking for as long as I can remember, shall we say decades, cooking great Indian food for my family and friends. When my children moved out, I gave each a copy of this book. Today they are cooking Julie Sahni's recipes for their circle of friends. How fortunate for us that she shares her authentic family mogul treasures, which we now call our family food. You will find this book easy to use because Julie Sahni, an amazing teacher and writer, has made it all so simple. There are almost 100 pages devoted to cooking techniques and description of spices. The instructions are clear, precise and detailed without being overly long. Every recipe is delicious, producing results exactly as described. Just try Rogan Josh-lamb in fragrant garlic cream sauce, Murgh Khoobani- Moghul spice braised Cornish hens with apricot or Goan Vindaloo-hot pungent curry and you will understand the definition of 'extraordinary flavor'. Classic Indian Cooking is one of my three most treasured possessions (the others being Julia Child's French and Marcella Hazan's Italian). I seriously recommend this book.

Amazing...
This book was ranked among the top-six all-time cooking bibles by the New York Times. The moghul cuisine recipes are clear and detailed, without being "too-detailed". Julie Sahni uses her amazing knowledge of combining spices to make the dishes taste extraordinary. One of the sections is devoted to basic cooking techniques, concepts and description of Indian spices. Recipedelights.com recommends this book to the cooking experts as well as the beginners.

"Sideways" Super Story!
This book is about a crazy school that has been built sideways--with 30 classrooms straight up--and the ultra-crazy students who go to school there. Each chapter focuses on individual students, and serve well as stand-alone stories or as part of a whole. My favorite is the story of John, a student who can only read upside down words. His teacher tells him he can't keep his book upside-down. Instead, he has to learn to stand on his head! Unfortunately for him, John has a really round head, and can't stand on it... This is just an example of the silliness that abounds in Wayside! Great story for read-aloud, or silent reading time.

The Greatest Book on Earth
There once was a class with a teacher so mean if the students did one thing wrong she would turn them into an apple.Once she turned them all into apples except for one. the yard teacher Lowis came and saw 26 little apples on the teachers deskand said,"She must be a good teacher if she gets so many apples." One dayshe was going to turn the last person into an apple and...
Read the rest to find out.
If you want a book to just liedown in bed with then The Sideways Stories of Wayside School is the book for you. I think you should buy this book because it is a wonderful book and it is a very very very funny book.

5 star book
If you like pointless funny books read this. Sideways Stories from Wayside School is a great book. If you're like me and like pointless books this the book for you. This school has thirty floors but no nineteenth story. Strange! Yeah! This does not have chapters but it has stories about kids in the school. Let me tell you these kids are weird. They paint crazy pictures; they fall asleep and fall out of windows. These are just a few of the crazy stories. Go get a copy of this.

What's So Great About It?
I feel like SIMON COWELL and I'm sorry, but I just don't see what was so great about this book. It was boring and the plot was very weak. Need I say more? Well, I will. I usually love this author.

DELICIOUSLY ROMANTIC BOOK ,MUST READ
This book by Julie Garwood is probably one of the best romantic novels ever written ,at least I think so .It is a roller coaster ride with a great storyline :elements of mystery ,romance and humour sucessfully knit together and the sex scenes are HOT .The charachters Alec and Jamie are two absolutely adorable people.Alec Kincaid is a Scottish laird who by the edict of the king should take an English bride . He chooses Jamie a violet eyed , fiesty beauty . Both vow not to fall in love with the other; Alec because he does not beleive in love and Jamie because she is angry at Alec who to her seems like a ruthless person who took her away from her home . However there is an intense attraction between them which slowly blossoms into a love that will change their lives and conquer all. It is a wonderful book and i assure you that by the end of the book you will be in love the charachters and they will stay with you . So take my advice and be prepared for the ride of your life ...

Warmth and Humor
SEQUEL: THE WEDDING

I have read almost all of Julie Garwood's work and I've never been disappointed. She will always be my all time favorite author esp. in Historical Romance Genre. Upon observation, I do agree with most avid Julie Garwood readers that she tend to use the same characteristics and somewhat similar formulas in most of her works - Her heroes are mostly tall, large-brutish-warrior & intimading yet handsome who is gentle and patient to his Lady. Meanwhile, the heroines are usually petite, well educated, saucy and spunky. However, I confessed that these familiarities doesn't seem to bother me at all. In fact, I liked it. Every now and then, I do enjoy my books with such characteristics. I'm guessing, this is J.G's style, her mark/her signature traits and I respect that. Humor, heart warming scenes, heart pumping twist and lovable secondary characters are also just a few of Julie Garwood's usual ingredients in all her novels.

THE BRIDE is definitely not an exception of Ms. Garwood's standard book qualities which I've mention above. Alec and Jamie's love story was captivating. Full of warmth and humor - I liked the idea that Jamie has no sense of direction, not to mention her ways of saving Alec's soul by buying an indulgence -chuckle! You have to read the book to appreciate this scene with a good laugh. My favorite part was the initial meeting (the conversation in the stable and the "choosing")... from there, the book gets funnier & even better! The arrival and adjustments in Highland are as always interesting. The suspense of finding out the murderer in this book was an add-on thrill. I have my doubts and guesses but the revelation was quite unexpected. I actually thought the murderer would be ----- yet I prayed and cross my fingers that it wouldn't be him because I liked him so much. So in a way, I was relieved it wasn't who I thought it was. The ending of this book was also one of my favorite in this book, another very unexpected and thoroughly heart warming conclusion to a supreme love story. Mary, Daniel, Gavin, Angus, Elizabeth, Father Murdock are just a few secondary character-favs of mine. What a joy! Read this book and chuckle with a glowing heart.

AN AWESOME BOOK!!!!!!
This book was one of Julie Garwood's best. It touched me in every way and I fell in love with all the characters. Especially Judith and Iain. I loved the way that Ms. Garwood made them so real that I felt like I was apart of the book instead of just a reader. I also loved the humour, I laughed so much tears came to my eyes. It was so wonderful, once I had finished it I read it again. I never miss any of Ms. Garwood's books because I know they will always be good

FUNNY, FUNNY, FUNNY!!! Julie Garwood is the ABSOLUTE BEST!
In my opinion SECRET is one of the funniest books written by Julie Garwood. This is one of the only books that I've read that didn't need some diabolical plan to be interesting. I laughed (especially at the way Judith reacted each time she had to act as midwife) throughout the entire book! I only hope that there will be more stories to come from this one. I've read RANSOM (wonderful work) but I would really love to read more about these characters, they are just priceless! But then again I shouldn't be surprised... it is after all Julie Garwood we're talking about!
