Enchanted Wintery Land
Hans Christian Andersen is one of the most famous writers of fairy tales. The Snow Queen is one of the longest tales and one of his best known. He would listen to folk and fairy tales as a child and when he grew up, he wrote some of these stories in his own words.

Anderson began writing The Snow Queen on December 5, 1844 and it was published sixteen days later in book form! His fairy tales made him famous and the stories have been translated into more than 100 languages and some have been made into films, like the Little Mermaid.

Nilesh Mistry is one of my favorite illustrators. He was born in Bombay and moved to London, England in 1975. His books include The Illustrated Book of Fairy Tales and Aladdin. I simply want to own every book he illustrates!

In the story of The Snow Queen, you will find illustrations and photography that shows the settings of the original book. This classic is again brought to life, yet never so beautifully as with Nilesh Mistry's art. Kai is whirled away by the icily beautiful Snow Queen. His playmate Gerda sets out to find him and encounters many adventures in his quest. This is a story I remember very well, yet I had to imagine the pictures in my own mind as a child.

In this book, she looks hauntingly similar to how I pictured her as a child. "The driver stood up, in a coat and hat of purest snow. She was a woman, tall and glittering. She was the Snow Queen."

The story begins with a story about the Devil who laughed at his own cleverness. He creates a mirror that sets people against one another by making people see the ugly side of things. If a splinter of glass from the mirror ever entered a person's eye, their heart would become a lump of solid ice. (quite a lesson there to be sure!)

When the "imps" decide to take the mirror up to the angels and try to make fun of them, it falls and shatteres into a hundred pieces. When "Kai" finds a grain of glass in his heart his entire attitude to life is changed. "Keep away from me!" he screeches at his friend Gerda.

Then one day he falls off his sled and sees the Snow Queen. She kisses him with her cold lips on his forehead and she takes him away through a cloud of darkness up into the sky. When Kai doesn't come home, Gerda goes looking for him. She sings to the river and drifts in a boat down a river to find Kai.

Gerda is a contrast to Kai and is loving and kind. Only when a spell is broken is evil defeated. After the story a page of where the event takes place helps make the story more interesting. Finally, we can explore the real and imaginary world of The Snow Queen.

Even as an adult, I am fascinated by fairy tales. They appeal to the child in us all and to something deep inside of us that knows, good will triumph over evil, in the end.

A superb "theatre of the mind" experience.
Family Classic Audio Books is a series of outstanding "theater of the mind" audiobook productions featuring a full cast performance. One of their latest offerings for young listeners (and their families) are Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairytale The Snow Queen adapted and with lyrics by Adrian Mitchell set to music by Richard Peaslee and wonderfully narrated by Jonathan Pryce. The Snow Queen follows young Gerda's quest (with help from some magical characters she meets en route) to rescue her friend Kai from the icy clutches of the Snow Queen.

This is a tremendous story for all ages.
The messages relating to lifes journey are wonderful. If you have never read this book as a child or as an adult, it is a must!

Laura is showing you threw life!
This is the most fantastic, exciting book that I ever read. It has everything a reader wants in a book, action, romance and suspense. Laura wants to get into a casino so badly that she takes gigantic steps to succeed. She steals the I.D of her 21 years old sister, steals her dead mother's clothes, makeup and jewelry. Laura went threw all of this trouble just to get into a casino. After weeks of gambling she gets caught up in love problems. At first she likes her best friends brother, but after being in the casino so often, she meets and falls madly in love with a man called Ari. This book shows the side of life of a young adult wanting to do adult stuff. Life is difficult and full of choices. You can chose to grow up, get a job, get married and do adult stuff, or never grow up and never to adult stuff. Who get some of these experiences with the journey of Laura. I rate this book as high as it goes, and I think every girl and boy should read the book The Dark Card!

An exciting "sitting on the edge of your seat" book
This book along with many that I have read was probalbly the best. The enchanting story of a seventeen year old girl who becomes obsessed with gambling and tries to cope with the fact that her mother no longer exists, tells and shows more more than one could imagion about any seventeen year olds semi-charmed life. It is exciting to read and is a real page turner. I never put the book down.

Sad Little Laura Immortalized In An Excellent Novel!
This is an excellent book that highly expresses the feelings of a young girl my age who is depressed of the lose of her beloved mother. The best part is when Laura steal's Heather's ID to get into the casinos of Atlantic City, and after reading this book, I became so interested and fascinated by Atlantic City that I had to go there. I confess that I truly loved Atlantic City when I went there for the first time, and it was interesting seeing all the people gamble at the tables and the slots. And I thought to myself, "God, I can't wait until I'm twenty-one!" Also, my parents promised to take me there! What a great book! I would highly recommend this book! Laura is a character who you would definately want to read about and never want to forget!

An inspirational story of a courageous environmentalist
Rachel Carson is most often remembered simply as the author of a groundbreaking book that initiated the modern environmental movement. Surprisingly, it is a picture book--traditionally thought of as trivial children's entertainment--that offers the most engrossing and insightful view into the life of, not just an author, but an extraordinary person. We follow Rachel from her discovery of her first fossil at age five, through her years as a student and biologist at Woods Hole Laboratory, as she writes her fascinating books about the ocean, right on up to the publication of "Silent Spring" and her death soon after. Amy Ehrlich introduces her to us like a good friend. She discusses the most significant years of her life with short yet informative text. Her captivating writing is accompanied by paintings by well-known jacket artist and picture book illustrator Wendell Minor. As he did with another recent picture book biography, INTO THE WOODS: JOHN JAMES AUDUBON LIVES HIS DREAM, Mr. Minor has managed to capture the personality of his subject with great accuracy and care. One moment we are sitting beside Rachel as she peers at paramecium through a microscope; a few pages later she is standing on a mossy inlet protruding into the sea under a full yellow moon. The illustrations are given as much detail and consideration as Rachel put into her books. Their beauty is just as memorable as is Rachel's actual story; at the end, one cannot help but feel their spirits lifted upon viewing the picture of Rachel gazing up at a flock of monarch butterflies lifting into a clear blue sky. Both the author and the illustrator have done a fabulous job honoring and sharing the life of this fascinating woman with readers young and old. If you know an aspiring young naturalist or have long admired Rachel Carson yourself, this book is worth treasuring. Although we have come a long way from the widespread pesticide use and careless environmental contamination of Rachel's day, there is still much work to be done. RACHEL is just the kind of book to influence someone to help and persevere with their cause, whatever that may be. Rachel's courage--from facing fierce criticism after the publication of "Silent Spring" and battling cancer--are inspirational and should ring true with all readers of this book. It's hard to admire Rachel without thinking of another pioneer in the American environmental movement, so check out the recently published INTO THE WOODS, about Audubon, as well; you won't be disappointed by either.

A helpful resource for our mostly Gentile elementary school
I've read this picture book many times over the years to predominantly Gentile elementary students in our school library to help explain the historical events behind the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah. The quasi-biblical language used in the text makes this book more effective for older students, from about 4th to 6th grades.

Students familiar with the Bible and the Temple in Jerusalem seem to get a bit more out of the narrative, but it's still necessary to stop and explain terms like Sabbath, idols, pigs, and the month of Kislev.

Ori Sherman's bold colorful paintings are obviously not meant to depict a literal representation of the story line, and the students readily accept them as an artistic interpretation.

In our rural, mostly Gentile, environment, this version of the Story of Hanukkah has been a helpful resource.

Definitely an eye opener!
I'm glad that I read this book. I have never read about history from this point of view. It was moving! This version was written for young adults, and I feel that students should be required to read this at least in high school. Many people will be moved to tears and heartbroken as I was.

A story about the kind of life every child should live.
This is a truly beautiful book. The paintings are colorful and portray a sense of security that every child craves. The parents are really involved with their son and teach him how to solve problems by doing things differently. When the upstairs neighbor complained that the father's piano playing was too loud, Zeek's father nailed the carpet to the ceiling to cut down on the noise. Zeek and his mother solve the mystery of the bread and play dancing games together. Ms. Ehrlich's writing is simple and direct without losing any poignancy. A beautiful book.

Good But not the best
the Book was good but i do wish they showed the picuter of the second ball whith cinderella in her gown

school project
Cinderella lived with her two step-sisters. They gave her the nickname Cinderseat. They were really mean to her and made her do things for them. The king's son was to give a ball and everyone was invited. When the day came Cinderella began to cry and her godmother appeared and made her get a pumpkin, which she turned into a coach. She then turned mice into horses, and a rat into a coachman. Then dressed her in a beautiful dress and glass slippers. When she arrived she danced with the prince, but she had to leave before midnight. She left without telling anyone her name or anything. The next night they went to another ball and she left right before midnight in rags, and left one glass slipper behind. He checked around trying the slipper on everyone. When Cinderella tried it on it fit her perfectly, and the prince realized she was the mysterious girl he had danced with before and they were to be married. I think this is a good story for kids to read, because Cinderella was really nice to her step-sisters who were always so mean to her after everything.

No other description - Gorgeous!
This past weekend, our 3-1/2 year old daughter's grandparents came into town. Her Nonna told her a bedtime story about Rapunzel, a story she had not heard before. She was enchanted. Needless to say, Nonna went out the next day to buy a book and she came home with Paul Zelinsky's beautiful book.

I can't comment on the accuracy and literary side of the book - I'm not an expert on the original tale. However, the writing is wonderful; the story is an easy read with younger children. But clearly, the illustrations are what set this book apart. Many children's books use child-like pictures - but each page of this book is a new and different work of art. Detail and texturing worthy of an art gallery make this a pleasure to view as well as read. Highly recommended.

Beautiful illustrations and a traditional retelling
Paul O. Zelinsky's "Rapunzel" is a delight of renaissance-like oil paintings depicting a delicately beautiful girl, a frightening witch, and a handsome prince. The illustrations are truly superb, and each page features a beautifully rendered painting rich with color and detail.

Zelinsky's retelling of the story is traditional yet satisfying, but the illustrations really steal the show. Children will get caught up in the fairytale landscapes and the magical locales. Readers will also appreciate the additional information provided by Zelinsky about his retelling of the story and his study of Italian Renaissance art. It's always nice to know why artists choose to illustrate stories in a certain way.

This book won the Caldecott Medal for its fantastic illustrations.

A visually beautiful rendition of a timeless tale
"When I was a young girl, I had long braids, and always wanted to be Rapunzel," confided a colleague at a recent meeting. Paul Zelinsky's Caldecott award-winning retelling of this age-old tale of a mother-to-be's craving for the forbidden rapunzel, a possessive sorceress, a beautiful girl with an unending cascade of silky hair shut away in a remote tower, and a handsome prince just might reawaken those desires. In his informative "Note About Rapunzel ," Zelinsky relates how he drew on elements from the early French and Italian sources as well as from the better known Grimm version of this tale to create his own compelling version. Thus, some details of the story are less familiar. Rapunzel naively reveals that she has had a visitor in the tower when she asks the sorceress to help her with her dress for, "It is growing so tight around my waist, it doesn't want to fit me anymore." Other elements, retold in their familiar spare rhythm, such as "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!" retain ther original power. Zelinsky uses the formal beauty of Renaissance art to evoke both the physical beauty of the characters and the Italian landscape. His large oil paintings overflow with softly muted colors, billowing folds of finely detailed period costumes, ornate architecture, and majestic landscapes. His masterful use of glinting and filtering light illuminates every page. Zelinsky's Rapunzel is a book to be treasured by anyone who appreciates a timeless tale and delights in an object of visual beauty.
