I love this book!
I love this diet plan so much! As a carb addicted teen it's helped me to lose weight and feel better. I've lost 10 pounds already on this diet. The plan is so easy to follow and I don't get junk food cravings any more. I would reccomend this book to anyone who has struggled with weight and food cravings.

This Book Can Save Your Child's Life
I ordered and read the adult version of this book. Within one week I ordered and read this book knowing that in I would find the answers to my daughter's diet problems. She has been following the program for only 5 days and has already experienced a dramatic drop in cravings. Her behavior and attention has never been better. She has also lost a pound already. I turned to this program as a solution for my weight but have found so much more. Never before had I been relieved of my obsession for sweets and breads. This program did just that for both of us! If you think you may need it you probably do. Just read the book. It explains it all. Feel free to contact me if you want to discuss this further.

Carbohydrate Addicted Kids
The book is excellent. I have read all of the Heller's books and I think this one is one of their best. It makes so much sense and really offers a lot of suggestions on how to help our children change their eating habits, as well as helping our kids achieve weight loss. It also addresses several behavioral issues as possibly being food related and offers suggestions for correcting these behaviors through food. I have been introducing new foods to even my 3 year old daughter like they recommend, and she has responded positively. It really does work. I would highly recommend this book to ANYONE with kids, and a great read for adults too.

This book sure makes it clear how it all adds up. I find the layout of each fast-food restaurant very helpful. So much for choosing chicken sandwiches at BK over a Whopper!

Life Saving Plan
This is an excellent, simply written, but well researched, book on the dangers of bad carbs. I found it extremely enlightening and wondered if it was more than coincidental that Dr. Barry Sears, writes in an amazingly similar vein, in his book "Enter The Zone". It seems that more and more scientists, and doctors, are discovering that we suffer from an overabundance of bad carbs in our eating, and it's also imbalanced versus protein and fat intake.I would heartily recommend this book, and for more scientific corroborative data read "Enter the Zone". Combine this with the sensible exercise program outlined in "Body for Life" by Bill Phillips of EAS Inc., and you will do yourself a very large favour.

Buy this book if you ate junk food this week!
I picked up this book while browsing in a bookstore and it changed my life. I started at 153 pounds and my goal weight was 118. I weighed 116 this morning. And I have more energy, am more mentally alert and upbeat than I ever have been. The book is very motivational. The rules and guidelines for the diet are spread throughout the book so you must read all before starting. Only criticisms are that it's wordy and most of the recipes are bland, but I believe it's the best of all the books the Hellers have written.

I've done it and it's wonderful
When I began driving a truck I gained 30 pounds in the 1st month. Fortunately I found this book and re-learned how to eat. Doing this diet right is not the easiest thing, breaking food addiction is seldom easy, but if you read this book it will be easier to make happen. I've lost those 30 pounds and more, landing at an ideal wieght that I've never imagined being at again. Good luck, use this book - it's a great resource. Follow where it leads.

A New Life!
Although this book can be a little heavy with the medical jargon, the information provided has completely changed the lives of my mother and myself. In 6 months, our energy levels are up and our blood fat levels are down, along with all of the excess weight! All cholesterol reducing medications, except niacin have been discontinued. I have also tried to influence the lives of 2 of my children, who are carbhydrate addicted. They are teens and hopefully will not have to go through the years of poor physical health that I did. It is a wonderful feeling to enjoy each day, not driven by the cravings and released from the worry of premature heart disease! Thank you for our new lease on life!

Finally, a way of life I can live with--no more dieting!
For years I've been looking for the perfect diet--a diet that would allow me to lose weight and be healthy. I tried a number of diets only to find myself falling off the wagon here and there and then finally giving up. After reading this book (and I've read it at least twice by now) I am convinced that this is the perfect way of life for me. The Hellers and Mr. Vagnini have done their homework and provided us with a foolproof means of getting the weight off and preventing heart disease. I recommend it for everyone but especially for women who like me (in their early 50s) are entering those years when we are most prone to heart disease and diabetes. IT'S A MUST READ!!

This Book Turned My Life Around In Two Weeks!
There is nothing worse than being a fat, out-of-condition cardiologist! You know your patients are wondering how you can be giving advice when you look like you're going to have a heart attack yourself any minute.Until I found this book I had all but given up.My father and his two brothers suffered heart attacks by age 55. My mother's family had diabetes. I felt as if I was headed straight for a heart attack. My blood fat levels, blood pressure, blood sugar levels and weight were getting worse no matter I tried. I had seen this time and time again in my patients but, to tell the truth, low-fat diets just didn't work for me. I couldn't stay on them and they seemed to make my blood fat levels worse. In the two weeks after finding this book my life has turned around. My cravings are gone - gone - gone. My blood pressure, triglycerides, and blood sugar levels are normal! I'm losing weight even though I have a Reward Meal of my dreams every night.I knew this program made sense when I read it. It was built on good science and it was the first program I felt I could believe in. But living it is even better than I could have hoped for.I started giving copies of this book to my patients. The immediate results appear to be just a great for them. I just want everyone to know that this program not only makes good sense and is easy to follow but that it works, too!

Decent book
This one is ok, not one of the best, but not the worst either. It did have some decent tips and strategies for spotting an overlay and has been somewhat of a help to me in my handicapping.

Not too bad...
I thought the book was pretty good. Some good straightforward advice that is good to take with you to the track. No systems or guarantees, just common sense. The only drawback is that the analysis is using older formats of the Racing Form that doesn't include Beyers, and other newer things. The insight from the Mig, PG Johnson etc. was helpful.

Practice the Diet for 5 Months Before You Judge It :-)
I was completely dedicated to CAD/CALP for 5 months and lost only 4 - 5 pounds (total). I never once fell off of the wagon. However, the weight came off, very, very slowly. At first, the diet was liberating! No cravings, eat a balanced (but whatever I wanted dinner), and eat low/no carbs during the day. It never worked for me. And slowly the diet became incredibly restrictive--especially after I went out to the message boards and the Carbohydrate Addicts web site. I discovered that I probably had a sensitivity to MSG, then it was cabbage, then it was certain other vegetables. Before I knew it, I was trying only protein during the day, eliminating many vegetables, and feeling worried that after every reward meal, I would gain weight at the next day's weigh-in, or actually hit one of my many, many stalls. I finally realized (duh) that this diet didn't work (for me). I joined Weight Watchers in June and have already lost over 12 pounds (updated: 17 pounds). What have I learned? Well, for one, I'm not sensitive to MSG, cabbage, etc., etc. I can eat carbohydrates during the day and not go craving crazy. Actually, I eat nearly anything I want and haven't fallen off of the WW wagon either. No, the answer was a lot more simple than I ever expected. Just eat less, and make sure to eat less every day (i.e., no weekend splurges, no falling off and climbing back on the wagon, no big and then small reward meals). Believe it or not, the amount I eat is not a whole lot less, just a little less--but consistently. It's interesting that when you can eat anything that you want, you don't want everything. One more note: When I converted a couple of my carbo. addicts journals to the WW point system, for most of my reward meals, I was consuming about two to five times the number of points recommended for my weight. And this was in some cases based on a single serving of a reward meal balanced into thirds on my plate (it must have been that full-fat salad dressing and 2% milk). Lessons learned: Eat MSG on Carbo Addicts, and your weight could be up 1 to 4 pounds the next day. Eat MSG on WW's and you could lose a pound the next day. Hmmmmm....maybe it really IS the serving size. By the way, I give the book two stars because I do think the daily weighing, weekly averaging is a good way to track true weight loss. And I subtract three points because I think it (and the older CAD book) are a tad bit misleading--especially when all of those restrictions kick in. So, if you start finding yourself sensitive to everything and you stall, stall, stall...I'd say you might need to explore other avenues. PS...I tested as a moderate carbo. addict.

It works. A sustainable weight loss with few cravings.
I have recently been under a great deal of stress with my wife's illness and trying to cope with it. I am in the military and can't afford to be overweight yet my weight continued to climb even with increased exercise and a sensible diet as recommended by nutritionists. After two unsuccessfulI watched a show concerning this book and the stress factor concerning insulin production hit a nerve. I bought the book and have stuck strickly by the plan. In 24 days I have shed 14 pounds with out the hunger pains. Although they allow deserts with the rewards meal, I have chosen to have fruit. I do want the sweets but am more concerned about weight loss for now. With each pound going away, the exercising becomes easier which sheds more pounds. I have tried other diets but rarely was able to continue them for long, I really missed the sweets. No longer, now I can have them too, just has to be during the rewards meal. Buy it, read it, understand it, and apply it. I don't think I was a true carbohydrate addict but after taking the test they provide, I was in the middle group. Doesn't matter now, their process works and is spelled out in laymans terms. Some of the receipes were not worth my effort to prepare them but we each have our own tastes.

A Clinically Proven Solution
A recent negative review calls the authors "so called" experts. This is unfair - they are clinical leaders in the field.

Anyone thinking of buying this book should appreciate that it is the product of over a decade of clinical testing at a world renowned US teaching hospital.

This is NOT just another fad diet. The authors have identified a physical process that is addicting many people to food and is probably causing widespread chronic disease. And much more than that, they have developed and tested a workable approach to overcoming the problem.

The claims that they make have been proven, and their clinical success rate - expressed as the percentage who reach their target weight and maintain it for a year - is over 80%. Compared to conventional dieting this is a remarkable result.

Yes, the diet allows people to eat a little of their favourite unhealthy foods within certain conditions, but this is simply being realistic - most people won't stick to a diet that forbids too much. You always have the choice of cutting out the junk if you want to.

The Hellers provide the knowledge. The rest is up to us.

The book was inspiring.
It took me a day to read the book. At first I thought the diet was too good to be true, but I found that everything I read in the book was true. My mouthwatering cravings that I continuously had throughout my life ceased withing 2 days. My energy level skyrocketed and my mood swings actually stopped. For the last 10 years I wanted to take off 20 lbs., I never could do it. I just wanted to thank the Hellers for wrtiting this book.

Life-Changing and enlightening
Yes, this book and the Doctors Heller DID change my life and my entire life style concerning my health, eating habits, what happens after that particular food enters my body. The mood swings, the panic attacks, their HISTORY! It was the addiction to Carbohydrates! The adreneline surges, etc, it was all caused from my diet. I also learned, while just starting this Life plan was, that after starting hormone therapy a lot of changes were going on, and causing these pounds to add up, and the moods, etc. Just read the book, it makes sense! AND, it Works!!! Five pounds less in 4 weeks,...YIPPPEEE...

Almost like a miracle
I first heard about this diet 3 years ago when I was pregnant with baby #3. Recently, after the Heller's were on Oprah, I was reminded of it and bought the book. I have been working out consistently with a trainer for 6 months PLUS following a low fat high carb diet. I didn't loose a pound! After taking the quiz I knew I was Carbo addicted. I studied the guidelines and decided to try it. The first day I lost 3 pounds. I've been on the diet a week and I've lost 7 pounds! The weight is melting off. I have been a little hungry but it's Christmas. A lot of food around to tempt. BUt I've remained true to the guidelines and enjoyed my reward meal every day. It's getting easier. BUy this book. Take the quiz on the website and if you see yourself in the Q&A--BUY THIS BOOK. You will be so grateful to the Hellers. IF you are Carbo. Addicted this diet is the best for you.

Have you bothered to read the book?
If the two people in the negative reviews had bothered to read the books by Richard F. Heller and Dr. Rachael Heller they'd realise that the Drs are not telling you to eat no carbohydrates but simply switch when you eat them. The plan is easy to follow and works well. I've been waiting for a cookbook to make the plan easier to follow. I've tried some of the recipes in the back of the plan book and they work well and are tasty. I would highly recommend this diet but I would also recommend that you talk to your own doctor first before starting any diet.

The Carbohydrate Addict's Cookbook
This is the best cookbook I own, and believe me, I own a lot. It is full of recipes that are easily prepared, healthy and tasty. The reviewer that did not like this book, made a keen observation. This is not a DIET, it is a way of eating. There is no measuring, or counting of calories or grams of fat, so nutritional information is not necessary with this plan. It is making healthy choices of wonderful craving reducing vegetables combined with lean protein. It is not a diet of elimination or deprivation. The program shows you how to regulate your insulin production, and control your cravings by eating healthy foods and healthy fats with smart carb choices. I believe these recipes will be loved by all, but more appreciated once you have read the Carbohydrate Addict's Healthy Heart Program, or the Carbohydrate Addict's Lifespan Program.

Read this book before you condemn this eating plan!
The Hellers should not be roped into the "high-fast, low carbohydrate" camp and dismissed. When you actually read one of their books, you'll see they aren't saying no carbs, they're pushing for you to eat "smart carbs". They're not bacon and cream freaks like Atkins, or saying the only starch you can eat is oatmeal, like the Zone. They're saying the majority of your calories should come from lean protiens, healthy fats like olive oil, and, yes, carbohydrates like vegetables. Sounds OK to me! You can actually have whatever carbs you like, whether they be fruits, pastas, or breads, in limited portions, every day through reward meals. I, like a lot of others, have changed the way I look at food because of the Hellers. I'm slimmer, my cholestrol is down, and, most importantly, I feel great. And I'm eating smart, like the Hellers have been saying all along.

But, what about this book. Well, I love it! The recipes in this book are great -- the Hellers know we have lives and can't always spend hours in the kitchen, but we still need to prepare delicious healthy meals for us and our families. I recommend it highly!

The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet
I think this book is great! I am definitely sensitive to carbohydrates and find myself literally falling asleep after a meal of junk food. I followed the plan for seven weeks and lost 6 pounds. The seventh week I actually gained a pound. Consequently, I became discouraged and fell off the plan. Right away, I found myself feeling tired, depressed, and my mood swings were phenomenol! I checked out a support website for carb addicts and I'm going to try again using some of the tips suggested. Also, my blood pressure was better and my PVC's almost became nonexistant. In reading some other reviews, I noticed one that stated only losing 5 lbs. in 5 weeks--this is supposed to work this way, slowly. And another review said that they couldn't eat just meat and select veggies--not one mention of the all important Reward Meal. Obviously, they either didn't read the whole book, or didn't put into practice the Reward Meal. Without the Reward Meal this plan would be unliveable, but with it it's possible to make this a very balanced and nondeprivational diet--INCLUDING LOTS OF FRUITS AND VEGGIES, and whatever else one might feel is necessary to make this a very, VERY HEALTHY way of eating! Thanks!

It worked for me! Realistic!
I took a sample of the "test" that was published in a magazine, to see if I fit the profile - as a lark. I thought, "just another fad diet". The questions hit home so I bought the book and took the full test and scored 95%. So I read the book and decided to give it a try, what could I lose??? (No pun intended) Well, I lost 32 pounds and am still losing. And I feel great. Lost most cravings, started paying attention to real hunger cues, etc. The plan is so versatile, I can fit it into my lifestyle easily (eating out frequently and irregularly) and don't have to tell a host/hostess -- I can't eat that. Usually I can eat anything because I plan ahead; using the reward meal whenever I want to. And if I don't follow it for a while, I don't feel I have to beat myself up. No guilt trip here. The book solved a lot of my problems and I would recommend anyone who wants to feel better and/or lose weight to take the test and give the plan a try.

Long term success with this program
One reviewer here said they didn't know of anyone who's had long-term success with the plan proposed in this book, so I want to speak up. I've been following the plan outlined in this book (with some of the options from the Hellers' more recent Carb Addict's Lifespan book) for 5 YEARS and am maintaining a weight loss of more than 100 lbs!

If you've struggled with weight all your life, I highly recommend this book. This is a very workable, balanced program -- I eat fish, chicken, meat and cheese, plenty of lowcarb veggies, and once a day the carbs of my choice. Might be a bagel or a bowl of cereal, garlic mashed potatoes, chocolate chip cookies -- whatever I'm hankering for, and as long as it's part of a balanced meal, I don't have to feel guilty about it -- it's still on my diet.

There really is something to the lowcarb/insulin-control diet thing, and the Hellers' program is probably the most moderate and livable of the "control insulin levels by moderating your intake of carbs" diets. Not only can you lose weight, but by controlling insulin, you'll feel a whole lot better and have more energy. So, I hope you'll buy this book and I hope it makes the same difference in your life that it's made in mine!
