A great first of the year reading!
"Pa Lia's First Day" is a great beginning-of-the-year story for primary students. This is particularly true if you are lucky enough to have Hmong students. My class, which is usually about half Hmong, always gets excited that the book has a Hmong name in it and one of the main characters is Hmong. Why? Because it is extremely unusual. By the time they reach me, they've read many books with quite traditional names, but often have never read a book that has a name similar to their name.

Besides, and equally important, it's a great book to start the year off with. The story is about being new in the school and how Pa Lia feels about her situation.

Great book!

Students relate to Pa Lia
On her first day in a new school Pa Lia couldn't find her classroom, was knocked down by a bully, and got into trouble for passing notes. She felt alone and was afraid she wouldn't make new friends. My E.S.L. students really related to Pa Lia's feelings of being alone. This book makes an outstanding focal point for a thematic unit on friendship or on feelings. It provides a springboard for class discussions on how it feels to be the new student in a class . The figurative language in this book is especially beautiful and was well illustrated by author/illustrator Michelle Edwards.

Hebrew Prayer made simple!
Edwards' book offers the reader, of any age, a simplistic, yet refined approach to Hebrew prayer. She offers both the traditional Hebrew, as well as a English translation, coupled with striking illustrations that show the deeper meaning of each prayer. Any child or adult who is even slightly interested in Hebrew prayer will treasure this book.

Gardening, Art, and Friendship
[...] I would have paid the jacket price. The story is heart warming, and sweet. As a resident of a small mid-western town, I believe the story keenly reflects the type of people who live in this wonderful part of our country. If you're into gardening, or art, this is also a great book. I found it very inspiring.
The best part of finding this book was that my 16 month old son loves the pictures, and actually sits through the whole thing. For him, a pretty big accomplishment!

This book is enchanting - good story, and wonderful use of the language. Spanish was quite basic and easy to understand even for a beginner. Beautiful illustrations.

Good book about Sarah
This book is the best if you are looking for anything on Sarah Michelle Gellar or the Buffy T.V series. It has great pictures too.I reccomend it for HUGE Sarah Michelle Gellar or Buffy fans.

This Book is THE BOMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Buffy: X-posed is the best book out there on Buffy, the Vampire Slayer and Sarah Michelle Gellar. I difinitely recommend this book to any Buffy fan! I am one myself. A big one. I believe this book will rank high among its competition.

A great book for all Buffy fans
This book does, in a great way sum up all episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer from "Welcome to the Hellmouth" too "Becoming, part II". Also, it contains a thorough biography of mrs. Gellar's acting career from her first appearance on "Invasion of Privacy" to todays Buffy, I Know What You did Last Summer and "Scream 2". In doing so it gives all Sarah Michelle Gellar fans all the knowledge they need aout their Idol.

Generally a really good Perl book but ...
EDITORS WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!!! I think that the editors of this book should find another job - this book is full of typos and errors.

Other than that this would be a great book (probably five stars if it had a better index).

Anyway the material, the pace, and the writing style are all to my liking. Probably not great if you haven't already had some programming experience.

I hope the next edition fixes the pile o' errors.

A good book to learn perl
if you have the patience to finish it! this book is packed with useful information with great depth, but its a bit dry and too thick for its intended purposes. it is a good buy to strengthen your perl knowledge and introduce you to do OOP with perl, however its not so ideal for a reference and i doubt anyone can finish this book cover-to-cover. i didnt finish it but for whatever chapters i have managed to read thru, they are pretty informative

Excellent for beginners to advanced
After buying several Perl books at first, (Learn Perl in 21 days, the camel book, perl by example etc) I stumbled into this one. I wish I had seen this one first !! An excellent tutorial AND a reference book. Worth every penny ! (well ... I mean, every cent)

poorly written
The book has much material, but the methodology is bad.

The best methodology is to provide sample input, the code,
and the output.

The author in many cases provides just code with neither input
nor output. The reader therefore cannot validate his understand-
ing against any kind of input.

There are also lots of little errors.

Exhaustive and makes good reading
This is one of the good books available in the market for a Perl Programmer. It has a lot of content, and if you take the font-size into account (fonts are small), you have lots to read. Perl programmers for the Windows platform would find this book to be pretty interesting. However, the authors could have done more justice if they could have given short but lucid examples to prove their point. Many a times, they either quickly digressed from their examples, or would have given some glib remarks about an important example.

I would have given this book more than 3 stars, but for the numerous typos and other minor errors which have been overlooked by the authors. At one point the authors, proudly proclaim that they had used Perl's Regular-Expressions to edit the book (???).

Nevertheless, I am sure the authors would notice the typos and minor mistakes that is rampant in this book and take remedial action in future editions. Perl being an idiosyncratic and idiomatic language, there should not be room for such syntactical errors which confounds the reader all the more.

Despite these reservations, I would enthusiastically recommend this book to any Perl programmer, particularly Windows users, as a guide and reference.

Good way to learn Perl
Perl Developer's Guide starts off a bit rough. The first chapter, An Overview of Perl, is enough to make anyone put away the book. But after getting scalars and arrays down pat, everything takes off. PDG will introduce you to almost everything Perl can do. From Windows programming to GUIs to CGI, this book has it all.

Born to Skate: The Michelle Kwan Story
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (1997)
Author: Edward Z. Epstein

Collectible price: $4.00
Average review score:

Disappointing and inaccurate
I'm a huge fan of figure skating in general and Michelle Kwan in particular, but this book sounded like it was written by an over-enthusiastic child. A lot of the quotes were taken directly from TV interviews that the skaters had done on TV, the writing and grammar were sloppy, and there were a lot of details that were just plain wrong. Tonya Harding did NOT come in third at the 93 nationals; that was Tonia Kwiatkowski (whose parents, by the way, are named Phil and Corinne, not Shirley and Leonard). Epstein waxes poetic about Michelle's brilliant artistry in 93 and 94, when she really didn't begin to shine until the 95-96 season. And any time Michelle didn't win first place, Epstein acts like she was robbed. These may seem like petty gripes, but with all the well-written literature available about Michelle, this book's numerous errors cause it to fall far short of what we've come to expect in skating coverage. Do yourself a favor and read Michelle's own autobiography or either of the two excellent books by Christine Brennan.

This book had very good detailing of how Kwan skated.
The book I read, "Born To Skate," was the best bool on a bibliography that I have ever read. The book had a lot of excellent detailing, which made the book sound a lot better. Michelle Kwan's story about her was interesting and educating. It talked about her dreams when she was little and how she made her dreams come true.

Her big dream was to go to the olympics, which she did and to become a world figure skater, which she also did. She always lived up to her expectations in life. She always kept a smile on her face even when she was down.

This story about Michelle Kwan's life was so wonderful to read about, because everything was positive about her attitude. Born To Skate was a good story about people living up to their dreams and never letting go of them no matter what. In the story she said, "Always live up to your dreams!"

I loved this book!
This book, besides giving tons of information on Michelle, had a great little directory in the back about all the jumps and spins. It taught me how to do my first lutz! I loved this book like I said and I hope you will too, but only another figure skater could give it 5 stars.

Dora's Book is OK
Dora's Book is about an older lady, Dora M. Skale. She has memories of her grandparents, Max and Molly, and wants to write down these memories before she gets any older than she already is. Dora writes for a long time but needs help from her best friend Tom if she will ever get this book printed. I thought the book could have been more interesting if it had focused more on what she remembered about her grandparents. But that's just me. Overall, Dora's Book was an all-around okay book.
