Comprehensive
This is the best comprehensive book I've read on becoming healthy (and I've researched 'becoming healthy' extensively). It's written for the average person who wants to avoid prevalent diseases of the US (overweight, cardiovascular, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis...). It's easy to understand what you need to do and the effects are long-term. Best of all it doesn't take a denial approach to eating.

The reading goes quickly even though repetitive sometimes. The information is up to date and is what your doctor should be telling you!

Note: This book isn't as much for people who want to be 100% healthy, as it targets a broud range of people. If your goal is to be 100% healthy, I'd recommend looking for literature on raw or living foods, juicing, and colon care.

Balance Your Body, Balance Your LifeTotal Health Rejuvenatio
A well written, motivating book. Dr. Taub takes the food, diet, and exercise corporations to the mat. Dr. Taub educates us on the corporate grooming of our nutritional needs. This is a scientific, truthful look at the myths surrounding how and what we eat. You will never look at milk the same way again. Good education on why and how our bodies function. Excellent suggestions for creating healthy habits. Easy to read, tough to put down. I've been following his suggestions for three weeks and felt better about my health in one. This is a book for life.

Edward Thomas and similar poets: poetic treasures to find !
This book is a very worthwhile companion volume to another recent book by Anne Harvey, "Adlestrop Revisited: an Anthology Inspired by Edward Thomas's Poem" (1999). Notable among the poets/"elected friends" are: Eleanor Farjeon (friend and literary adviser of Edward Thomas, and author of "Morning Has Broken" - set to the music of the traditional Irish hymn "St Patrick's Breastplate" and popularised in the 1970s by Cat Stevens); Other poets such as Ivor Gurney, Walter John De La Mare and William Henry Davies and Robert Frost, to name a few. "Elected Friends" is a book to be treasured and frequently "dipped into".

An excellent book encouraging serious introspection
The Heavenly Ladder was an uplifting surprise. It was practical and mystical, well-referenced and wonderfully written. Not only are there dozens of specific exercises designed for personal reflection and meditation, there is a wealth of information explaining the Jewish traditions that encourage such growth. I often think that authors of self-help books are helping primarily themselves by espousing their own methods. This book references methodology thousands of years old and applies it to techniques useful right now. Who am I to argue with Maimonides? Mr. Hofmann has done something uncanny- a self-help book that is truly helpful and definitely fascinating.

A decent book, but a little confusing in parts.
I am an EMT-B instructor in West Virginia and have used this edition to teach my classes. I have found it to be a great improvement over previous editions. The text is easy to read, comprehensive and all-in-all an excellent text on EMT-B. My only gripe with the book is that it makes prehospital patient assessment somewhat confusing for new students. The book breaks patient assessment up into several chapters, giving the reader the impression that assessment is both difficult and complicated. This lack of single-chapter continuity coupled with the trepidation many new students bring to this module creates the impression that patient assessment is a disjointed, randomized activity. I have to tell my students that for patient assessment, these chapters are a good reference, but that I will tell them just how easy assessment is; TAKE NOTES!

If Brady would spend a little more time examining this module, I feel as though they can make it a little less imposing and a little more readable.

Excellent resource manual
I am a student interested in becoming an EMT. I know the people at the local fire station so I asked them for a resource book and they gave me a 6th edition of this manual and it is proving to be an excellent resource. It has many pictures and at the beginning of each chapter, it gives a real life scenario for you to focus on for the chapter and explains objectives you should know by the end of the chapter. I've found it very informative and hope that the 8th edition follows in its footsteps. Well done Brady!

Excellent reference for the EMT-B
Excellent book, and extremely informative; I just completed the EMT-Basic course and the National Registry exam. The book was a wonderful source of knowledge, and reference. What I would like to see is perhaps a cheaper, paperback version of the book come out; we completed the course and had to return the book, and I just think that if it was more accessible, more students would have purchased it, instead of signing it out.

Interesting, good examples, but not all that useful
Positives: First I thought the book was very good in that it was very explicit in its examples. Most books have enough ambiguity so that running the examples is cumbersome. Not so in this book where instructions are explicit, examples have no typos and screenshots are useful. I also found the content interesting - it shows you the inner workings of MFC. Finally, I applaud the authors for trying to write a smaller book (only 140 pages compared to 1000 pages for most programming books).

Negatives: The book does not use the Visual C++ wizards. The author states this up front. But who would actually use Visual C++ without the wizard tools? I think after showing the information about MFC the author could have then shown how to do the same things with the wizards.

Okay.........
This is a good book, but some of the code has bugs in them.

A Great Little book
Reading this little book (only 163 pages!) is the best way for a complete novice to get started learning MFC. The examples in the book are clear and easy to understand and all code is carefully commented line by line. No black magic anywhere. After reading this book you will understand the basic principles behind MFC.

The book of course only covers a small part of MFC. The authors do not cover Wizards and the Document/View architecture. So after reading this book you must read some other book that covers those topics. There are lots of them. You will find a dozen in any book store.

But read this book first. Otherwise Wizards and Document/View apps will just seem like black magic. This book will give you a solid foundation that helps you understand what you are doing.

not based on fact
While there is nothing inherently wrong with the general recommendations of this book: eat a lot of fruit and vegetables and stay away from animal fats, the concept of food combining has absolutely no base in science. The (not educated in nutrition or other health fields) authors' main argument for food combining is that some foods need acidic conditions to digest and others basic conditions and you shouldn't mix these two, otherwise the stomach/digestive system will get confused and bloated. In (simplified) truth, acidic digestion happens in the stomach and basic digestion happens in the intestine. The enzymes used to break down proteins and carbohydratess in the stomach prefer acidic conditions and the enzymes used to break down fats and some proteins in the intestines prefer basic conditions. Mixing these types of foods is just fine, which is we are all still alive and (mostly) unbloated.

However, if you are looking to lose weight and need a "plan" this one will probably work and as it emphasizes plant products it is probably a healthier way of eating than many other fad diets.

An excellent approach to natural weight loss!
One of the most interesting and controversial books to ever come out on the topic of good health and weight loss, Fit for Life sold millions of copies and helped many people. The book was largely ridiculed by the established nutrition experts who at the time attacked the credibility of the authors Harvey & Marilyn Diamond.Whilst the critics went about their fault finding ways, hundreds of thousands of people around the world received incredible health gains and weight loss by following the simple principles.

The book is actually based on the study of Natural Health, or more specifically Natural Hygiene, which is a lifestyle philosophy which has been practiced for over 100 years. Natural Hygiene is a way of eating that is in harmony with the bodies natural cycles, thereby allowing the body to cleanse itself of built up toxins which our normal western style diets don't allow. Basically the body has three main cycles, but the key one for good health and weight loss is the elimination cycle.. Fit for Life shows you how to eat in a manner that is in harmony with these body cycles and the result can be a dramatic increase in energy and feelings of well being, as well as a resultant loss of excess fats and toxins.

If you have never read Fit For Life you should most definetly get yourself a copy and give it a read. It makes good common sense and after a week following the principles you'll feel great and be on the road to good health and losing those excess pounds.

Not a diet - just a healthy way to eat
Fit for Life made a huge impact on my lifestyle. I lost weight, in a healthy way - because I was eating healthy. I wasn't skipping meals or taking diet supplements, just combining my foods according to the "Fit for Life" plan and eating at the right times. Results were almost immediate - not just loss of weight, but how I felt.

I'd also like to point out that the authors explain their ideas to be theoretical, not scientifically proven. I had a few people debate the theories in this book but the bottom line for me was that it worked, I felt great and it made sense to me. Meat and dairy are discouraged for good reasons. People asked me how I was getting my protein since I had cut back on my meat intake. There are other sources of protein....soy, nuts, some vegetables...things that I was eating a lot more of. And it's a proven fact that dairy is very difficult for your digestive system to break down. There are other sources of calcium as well. Take my advice, if you commit to this plan, it will not fail you. You'll be glad you did. And it's not a diet that you should stop once you've reached your goal weight; it's a new way of eating.

The Riddle of His Life
This 1978 book was made possible by support from the 'Reader's Digest'. It is about Oswald's relations with the intelligence services of 3 nations. The book starts with the defection of Nosenko (Jan 1964) who personally oversaw the KGB file on Oswald (p.7). Nosenko claimed that radar operator Oswald was never debriefed, and of no interest to the KGB (p.8); this story had problems (p.10). The CIA prepared 44 questions to clarify Nosenko's story, but the FBI refused to allow them (p.21). Marina's statements were accepted (p.24). Were her stories accepted because they told what the Govt. wanted to hear (p.42)? Pages 37-7 tell of Nosenko's deceptions, and failing a lie-detector test. But stress reactions measure other emotions besides lying; the Soviet Union did not use lie detectors, the CIA didn't rely on them (p.38). Nosenko's memory proved faulty. This didn't matter: the Warren Commission wanted a "lone gunman" verdict.

Chapter I tells of Oswald's youth. His favorite program was 'I Led Three Lives for the FBI", his ambition was to join the Marine Corps (p.59). He was elected president of his 8th grade class, his intelligence was above average. But schooling in NY city gave him Karl Marx as a hero (p.60)! Oswald joined the Marines, took the Radar Operator's course, and was sent to Atsugi where the CIA's U-2 was flown. Oswald minded his business and did his job well (p.68); he would travel to Tokyo on a 48-hour pass and keep it a secret (p.71). Oswald romanced a high-class hostess and brought her to the base. "There was nothing dumb about Oswald" (p.82). After he left the Marines he went to Moscow; someone there told him "the USSR is only great in literature" [fiction?] and he should go back home (p.106). Oswald was sent to Minsk, and again advised to go back home (p.108). Oswald learned more about "The New Class" and the reality behind the fiction. Pages 110-1 analyze Oswald's diary, and why it was fabricated. Page 137 wonders about Lee's marriage to Marina; but don't girls with an unhappy life at home marry the first chance they get? Oswald's changing statements when preparing his return are analyzed (p.153).

Book Three introduces George De Mohrenschildt, who made arrangements in October 1962 to move the Oswalds to Dallas from Fort Worth (p.189). (You wonder who was in control then?) Page 212 claims Oswald took a shot at General Walker, but presents no physical evidence. Oswald's' activities portrayed him as pro-Castro (p.229).

Other sources said Oswald had David Ferrie's library card in his possession; there is no mention in this book. Were other facts omitted? The 'Epilogue' says Nosenko was sent to deliver disinformation to the CIA, FBI, and Warren Commission (p.260); the latter wanted to believe this double-agent. Appendix D has a number of questions to clarify Oswald's life. Was this the last book to repeat the conclusions of the Warren Commission? You can find other books that offer more insight into the events of November 22-24 1963, and the aftermath. (The book "High Treason" goes into more detail on the JFK assassination and cover-up.)

Reads like a great spy novel, but it really happened!
I've read lots of book on the Kennedy assassination, and without question LEGEND ranks as the best, along with the other two books in THA ASSASSINATION CHRONICLES. LEGEND reads like a spy thriller, taking lots of twists and turns, studying the hidden agendas of all government agencies that had something to gain or lose by revealing Lee Harvey Oswald's real purpose in Russia. Through a careful analysis of the available evidence, Epstein points the finger at both the CIA and KGB for hiding and obscuring key facts about Oswald's life in Russia, and uncovers evidence that indicates Oswald was more than he appeared to be. Even handed and thouroughly documented, LEGEND is a must read in assassination lore.

Useful for a Specific type of Hiker
I didn't find this book that helpful, but I was looking for a more serious type of hiking. If you're just planning to do some day hikes, or are looking for a stroll in the mountains to break up some sightseeing then this book could be really useful. But if you're planning a serious hiking trip, then I'd recommend a different book - maybe Walking in the Alps by Kev Reynolds.

My biggest complaint was that it did not provide enough info on long/tough hikes. The format was good - clear, concise with nice lists - but it was not geared towards long, multiday hikes. (It has two or three I think). But it also does not have the same level of info on resturants, pubs, places to stay, as in some of the better guide books.

100 Hikes in the Alps
This book was amazing! I bought it before my vacation to the Alps and it helped a lot! This book helps you find hotels and nice places to stay while you take your trip. It also gave me good ideas of where to go. The most interesting places. It showed you where the big sites were. At first I didn't want to walk the whole way, but this book showed me how beautiful it was. It has beautiful pictures and really gave you an idea of what it was like. Buy it! It is not very expensive! It was so good that I looked up for more books buy the author of this fantastic book! They were also great!
