Complete Holistic Care.... Brennan/Eckroate: a review
This comprehensive volume addresses dozens of concerns for the horse owner, covering traditional and alternative health practices. The book is very complete in covering the health care options in two sections. The first part dealing with health care is an overview of traditional and holistic options. The final section of the volume is a comprehensive listing (with photos) of typical horse ailments with specific recommendations for each one. The entire book is written in a style easily understandable by the novice, but not too simplistic for the experienced horse owner. Photos and very complete appendices round out the coverage for this topic. Additionally, Brennan includes a comprehensive horse management section which is equally impressive in its scope, covering topics such as diet, grooming, tack and trailering. This book is truly a "must have" for the concerned horse owner.

The Real Definition of a Cat Lover
Now this is a woman who truly knows and loves cats. Frazier's interest in their care and handling began when she was working for a vet who sent her out to homes to groom cats. While grooming, she was confronted with a wide assortment of perplexing issues from dull coats and eating disorders to allergies and communication problems. By working with the vet, paying attention to the cats, and enlisting the help of the owners, she gradually found solutions to most of the problems and accumulated a gold mine of information.

Frazier's approach to writing is direct, simple and concise. Her suggestions are always presented with compassion, and keep the larger, holistic view in mind. I have found the sections on diet and nutrition particularly helpful, but Frazier waxes eloquent on a wide assortment of physical ailments, grooming, training, spiritual health and behavioral issues as well. If you're a cat owner don't miss this chance to get to know your furry friend in a whole new way. This book is both an invaluable resource and a wonderful contribution to interspecies communication. Five stars!

Wonderful "natural cat book": well worth the money
I have used this book for about seven years. It has been a wonderful resource for me and my multi-cat household, not to mention my various foster (feral) cats. This book is my feline textbook. Those who wish to go beyond the narrow Western view of veterinary care will absolutely love this book! It has endless suggestions on inexpensive and innovative home care that involve herbs, flower remedies, vitamins, broths, diet, home nursing, grooming, behavior, litter box, scratching post, neutering/spaying, common feline health problems, etc. Anitra Frazier's expertise goes on and on in many categories - she knows an incredible amount about cats. Even though this book was published in 1990, but it is definitely NOT out-of-date. It is well worth the money!

a must for providing healthy and natural cat care
Anitra Frazier has devoted her life to cats and has learned from a great deal of personal experiences with them. In this book, she shares what she has learned from cats, as well as seeks out veterinary experts for their opinions. This book covers all aspects of a cat's life, and concentrates on preventative care for cats. She writes a good deal about the importance of diet for cats and even provides an alternative "super-finicky I'll do anything for my cat" diet which consists of homemade food. The unitiated may find her references to visualization and flower essences a little "weird," but she offers enough information on more basic cat care needs to make this book a must for anyone who wants to provide the best care for their feline companion.

Holistic Dog Care at its easiest
After Dr. Pitcarin's Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats came a plethora of natural guides for animals. This book followed its predecessor The Natural Cat. This book is an easy to read holistic care guide, of which I always recommend in conjuction with Dr Pitcairn's guide for new dog owners. It is easy to read for the pet owner overhwelmed by the detailed knowledge of Dr Pitcairn's guide. With both books paired together, I feel any dog owner seriously interested in holistic pet care will be highly informed and motivated.

Wonderful overview of holistic care for dogs!
As the proud owner of a fourteen year old poodle named Murphy and a roaming tom-cat named Spencer, I appreciate a book with a holistic approach toward animal care. As with all older pets, my dog Murphy has experienced his fair share of medical problems and I don't like inundating him with prescription medication on a regular basis. The Natural Dog gives me a variety of natural and safe ways to treat Murphy's ailments, and provides methods to keep him healthy! This book is informative and entertaining, providing pet owners with an A-Z guide on common dog problems and their natural solutions. The Natural Dog will assist anyone who wishes to become acquainted with holistic medicine for pets.

Worth Wading Through, but don't expect much
I am thrilled that someone wrote a book encouraging us to think of our dogs in terms of friend and companion rather than demanding absolute submission. Although my biggest issue was that I felt that too much emphasis was placed on deep breathing exercises (a whole chapter + on that!) .

While the author encourages responsibility in the methods of training, he seems to allow the dog owner to be less resposible than they should in terms of results. He recommends you ignore bad behavior when possible. We all know that doesn't really work. You can't have a bad dog in the average city-- they'll get put to sleep, they'll get hurt, you'll get in trouble with your neighbors, the dog just continues on happily in the behavior. I just felt that there wasn't much emphasis put on really being able to save your dog's life with a command and being ablet o make them welcomed members of society. I wouldn't be asking for good behaviors if the bad ones would be okay to ignore!

I believe there is something good to be said for many of his training philosophies, especially the concept of 10,000 rewards. That's a wonderfully useful tool. I upped my antie a bit and got a way better response from my dog.

I disagree with the use of gentle leaders most of the time. They can cause neck problems and some dogs hate them so much it's constant mental anguish for them and like being reprimanded the whole time. Please do some research on gentle leaders before buying one for your dog.

Overall, this a fine enough book if you don't use it as the only source of information and don't feel too guilty if you need to use another method for some things that your dog is having problems with. While the author is way off into the holistic approach for my tastes, I got several good tidbits from his ideas.

A Must Have
This is a must have book for true animal lovers. Based on a philosophy of "Raise With Praise", Paul's approach is all about love... and let me tell you, it works! Paul covers every facet of caring for your dog, including: training, a truly healthy diet, and great insight into how dogs think.

I've read alot of books on dogs and this is by far the most original and compassionate approach I've seen. He really makes it fun! We trained our dog to sit, stay, come, crawl.. and absolutely had a blast doing it. His biggest asset seems to be that he really gets animals, he knows how they think and this has allowed him to develop a way to communicating with them that is positive and effective. Enjoy.

Opens your mind to new ways of looking at an old method.
This book is truly exceptional. It has taught me to talk to dogs in their language and clearly understand what I can expect of them. Knowing a bit more about how a dogs' brain works allows both of us (dog and owner) to be in a position where we can succeed. Paul's spiritual approach was enlightening, and yet he never pushes his beliefs. He simply gives a lot of information and then allows the reader to take what they want and throw away what does not work for them.

What is so inspiring about Paul's book is the commitment to providing dog owners with another approach to each aspect of dog training. My dog has been trained with positive methods and it is great to see a book out there which continues to spread the word.
