Sweet!
This is a really great book. It explains way more then you would expect for a field guide. It goes in depth about each plant, animals that depend on them and other interesting tidbits that you wont find in any other guide. The awsome illustrations are done so beautifully and true to life no one should have any problems idtentifying plants on the trail. They also truly give this book a nice touch. It's like a book of old documenting new discoveries!

Great book!
This is a must have book if you live in areas with swamps/bogs. Its so accurate I'm just amazed. It is also very easy to use. It has drawings and it talks not only about id of the plants but also their "lifestyle" (e.g. how they reproduce, various ideosyncasies of the plants, insects that are associated etc.) Each plant also has a short section on lore which adds a nice bit of history. I really like the book

Just what I was looking for!
For those people who already kind of know their way around the forest, and are more interested in what they are going to see ASSOCIATED with the plants they see than what an Audobon book says, this is a naturalist's dream come true!

Great b/w illustrations of not only leaves and fruits, but insects, diseases, toothmarks, clawmarks and nests that can be found on and around the trees and plants listed in the book...

Also highly recommended is the Forest and Thicket book by the same authors...

Recommended guide to bird behavior
I've owned this book a while and find and it to be an excellent source of information on individual species of birds. For some of us, just learning to recognize birds just isn't enough. Behavior is very interesting also, and this book contains interesting informative information on different birds. This is a must have for the library of every birder.

Excellent illustrations by Amelia Hansen!
The best thing about this comprehensive and well-researched reference is the illustrations by Amelia Hansen. If the publisher had only printed these pen-and-ink drawings larger, the book would have been more helpful. Hansen obviously understands the way birds move, rest and interact.

Takes up where the field guides leave off
Field guides are great for helping you identify the bird you just scoped, but once you want to learn more about the birds you've been seeing the field guides aren't of much use. This book covers a limited number of birds, but the information provided is excellent. He covers the life history of the birds, including a season by season account of the typical year in the bird's life. Mating habits, habitat preferences, and threats to their enviroment are some of the topics covered. In general, there are 3-5 pages devoted to each species. The illustrations are black and white, but are well done.

Excellent technical introduction
This publication will get you started in photomicrography and give you a good foundation to reference when you are selecting films for your micrographs. It may be a little intense for the casual hobbiest but still contains many illustrations and good information on setting up a microscope to take pictures.

The Sorcerers Apprentice
The Sorcerer's Apprentice is a book that I have found very useful as a teacher when teaching children alphabetical order.
It talks about the apprentice organizing the sorcerer's ingredients for spells and how he likes to have them in the cupboards in strict alphabetical order. It is a lovely starting point for lots of useful and informative discussion about keeping things in alphabetical order.

A quirky little nature book
This odd little book explores connections between plants, bugs and their habitat. Illustrations are line drawings. It is arranged alphabetically by plant name and each entry describes the plant and its natural associates.

Very little is said about the author's qualifications, so one must, I guess, assume that he knows whereof he writes.

A very limited list of plants is covered, with many major ones omitted. Some of the taxonomy is dated (and may have been wrong when it was written) eg including poison ivy in the Rhus genus.

I can think of better ways to spend money.

Great book!!!
I happpen to live with lots of thickets so this was very appropriate for us. It has really good drawings of the plants and insects that you might encounter with some ofthem. It talks about the different seasons and what the plants go through and what to look for. It also has special tips for id and has a section on lore for each plant so you get stories too. The swamp and bog book is layed out the same way and is also excellent. They go further than the typical plant id book so you can really learn something
