Hiking Virginia's Trails
Allen de Hart's The Trails of Virginia:Hiking the Old Dominionis a classic and exhaustive study of places to hike throughout a statethat is known for its beauty and history but less acknowledged for its vast array of outdoor recreational opportunities. The author doesn't just cover his personal favorites or the 50 best walks, but every trail in the state. He's included information on distance, history, scenic features, degree of difficulty, and directions - every piece of information the hiker will need. I've used this book countless times in not only planning a hike, but also in the process of researching and writing my own outdoor guides. No matter where you plan to hike or what your level of fitness is, a well-worn copy of the Trails of Virginia should sit on your bookshelf as it does on mine.

Simple and Successful Method
Crate training works because dogs, like their wild ancestors, desire a snug "den" that affords security and privacy. When dogs are crate trained properly, they accept and even enjoy their sequestered time.
The author, Pat Storer, is a dog breeder, a show judge, a specialist in dog temperament, and the author of eight animal-care books.
Storer shows you how to maintain a positive, loving attitude while being firm and consistent with your dog. With Storer's advice on choosing the right crate, step-by-step instructions, and tips for dealing with crate-related behavior problems, both you and your dog will find crate training to be a simple, successful experience.

Traditional skills and new techniques
Storey's Country Wisdom bulletins contain practical, hands-on instructions designed to help you master dozens of country living skills quickly and easily.
Storey has managed to pack a lot of great information and techniques into this and the other bulletins that I have purchased over the years.
Check out the other dog and cat bulletins too.

Marvin the Works
An interesting book to read, but very negative in parts. The best thing to do is see Marvin's films then read about it in the book, so you've already made your own mind up. The book brings across the authors own likes and dislikes about Marvin's films and career,i felt that it was a bit to influenced by his own likes and dislikes. At the end of the day you either like Lee Marvin and his film's or you don't. Personally i love the bloke and enjoy his film's and the many characters that he played. Marvin maybe dead but he'll never be forgotten with the work he left behind for us all to enjoy.

Reader Review of Lee Marin: His Films and Career
Robert Lentz has done an outstanding job in profiling the film and television career of one of America's most beloved tough guys. This insightful look into Marvin's tenure as an actor is a must read for anyone interested in films from the 1950s through the 1980s.

The detail used to describe each of Marvin's movies and television programs is excellent and the author deserves to be commended for his thorough research and love of the subject. In the fickle world of Hollywood stardom, it is refreshing to seem a tribute paid to some of the movie world's older names.

Lee Marvin -- learn more about this great actor
This book is a must for any fan of Lee Marvin. It contains dozens of great photos from Lee's career. Lee's growth from a young handsome actor to a legendary star is traced by the photos and the reviews in this book. The book tells the story of each film by Lee Marvin and also contains much information about Lee Marvin's television and documentary work as well.

The film reviews have detailed information about the films' plot and theme; and information about the producers, directors and other actors in the film. The reviews are set in chronological order so the progress of Lee Marvin's career may be easily followed.

This book only minimally describe Lee Marvin's personal life outside the movies. It takes the view of a student and fan of Lee Marvin - a fan who has all the best photos and has compiled all the details about Lee Marvin's films and his acting career. This book will be a reference for movie buffs and film students and teachers.

Poor Organization
This book is very poorly organized. It is divided into public and private trails, instead of by region. The index only contains the names of trails, not the names of the parks or places the trails are located. Some things which were missing from the book include a large map of the region with numbers indicating where the major trails are located and a listing of the trails with length and difficulty. If you can find the trail-heads the maps are very good and there are nice descriptions of the trails. This is not a good book if you are not familar with the area.

Good resource for area trails
My husband and I bought this book last year after we found ourselves looking for a new place to walk. We had been frequenting the Chapel Hill Greenway, and, well, it's just not very challenging. So, we picked up this book.

It's a very informative book. There are maps of most of the trails, which really helps you get a feel of the lay of the trail. Each trail has is accompanied by a lengthy description which include items such as:

*driving directions
*flora on the trail
*total distance of the trail
*distance of trail segements
*types of trails (dirt, gravel, footbridges)
*geography of trail (hills, streams, roads to cross)

The only issue we really had with the book were the driving directions. We were trying to get to a trail at Jordan Lake during the summer, and we weren't totally familiar with the area. We were following the directions in the book, but we really needed a few more geographical points to help us find the roads. Also, once we got to the trail area, we couldn't find the trailhead. The state did not do a good job marking the head, but it would have been nice to have known this in the trail description.

However, we did "discover" the Duke cross country trail from this book. We enjoy this trail- it is the perfect length for us and it's difficult enough to be a challenge. We also discovered that if you get caught in a rainstorm out there, there's absolutely nowhere to go!

If you like to walk in the Triangle, get this book!

De Hart 's book will evolve as the trail improves
I used this book as I went against the grain and attempted the MTS from Blowing Rock to Cherokee-backwards. I guess this is a one way trail! De Harts book is strictly from "left to right". Its plentiful in anecdotal ways and vague in ways that make it occasionally unreliable for the person attempting this trail-especially if you are going "backwards".

On the MTS trail, those seeking deep wilderness experience will have to be very tolerant. Through-hikers seeking to decompress and exit the infrastructuremania (much less human imprint altogether) might find this trail aggravating. If that doesn't get you then the the incredible inconsistency in the quality level of its marking will: some places are marked with excellence and intelligence, others are marked very poorly. No fault of Allen De Hart's.

Although there are many very long walking interludes away from the busy Blue Ridge Parkway, The MTS trail in the mountains is largely defined by this amazing asphalt strip. Hiking alongside, hidden in the woods, this trail has a walker moving within yards of and often with clear sight of a good bit of the BRP(or should I say the Harley Davidson Parkway?)often with incessant and persistent sound of traffic. When not on trail that mirrors the BRP one hikes along a fair amount of forest service road.

From Boone to Gatlinburg there is a spectacular, majestic wilderness with cascading creeks, lush forests, gorgeous waterfalls and timeless vistas. This vast, magical wonderland has been absolutely indundated, dissected, and overrun by bustling auto-tourism, commerce, and modern human living. Walking this trail brings this truth clearly to the user.

The MTS trail links together and passes through much exquisite ground. Without its traffic, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a wonderful, serene place (and would make a terrific trail-ask George Washington Vanderbilt!). If you are seeking to spirit away into a long-distance, primeval experience the MTS trail may not be the walk for you.

De Hart's maps are faint and of minimal use while on trail.

No frills, but comprehensive
If there's a walkway, path, or trail in North Carolina, it's probably in this book. Perhaps more remarkably, the author has hiked every one and measured almost all of them. The descriptions are from his personal journals, augmented by some researched background information on many parks, forests, and important trails.

To convey this huge quantity of information in a relatively compact book, the author has adopted a shorthand style that's reminiscent of telegrams and classified ads. The only maps are two large foldouts that show the general locations of the trailheads. However, the lack of trail maps and the terse style make it difficult to understand how various trails interconnect (until you buy the topos). If that bothers you, try Randy Johnson's "Hiking North Carolina."
