A gathering of gargoyles
"Gargoyles: Monsters in Stone" is a fine educational book by young readers. Jennifer Dussling's text is accompanied by Peter Church's charming full-color illustrations. Together, these collaborators explain the story behind the stone gargoyles that can be seen high up on many buildings.

The book explains the practical function of the gargoyles (to drain water from buildings). The book also explains how a stone carver creates a gargoyle, and illustrates various types of gargoyles. The illustrations are particularly pleasing, as are the Celtic-looking design borders that are used on the pages. A must-have for kids with an interest in the topic.

Never too young for gargoyles
You know what? My daughter, 23 months, LOVES this book. Gargoyle (or rather, "ga-goyle") has become one of her favorite words. She asks for this book by name frequently, and excitedly points out gargoyles she sees on local buildings in Chicago. This is a pleasant change of pace from the usual childhood fare.

More Than An Easy Reader!
Children will walk away from this easy reader with a wealth of knowledge about gargoyles! The illustrations complement the rich and accessible text by giving a medieval feel! A great read aloud! A great independent read!

A great scary story that kids will love.
This is a great scary story for kids because it will make them THINK. It's like an episode of the Twilight Zone, and gives them that wonderful "A ha!" moment that shows they're really involved in the story. This is much better than all the other "horror" books and TV shows out there, because it shows young readers that a story can be quiet and thoughtful, but still scary and fun.

a great scary story for boys AND girls
This book tells the Twilight Zone-like story of a creepy girl with a mysterious doll house. It's scary in an understated way--something to get kids thinking and the perfect story to begin discussion between parents and kids. It's also perfect as a basis for helping kids write their own scary stories.

I'm only seven And it is great
I just learned to read in first grade. The pictures were so great that I really wanted to read it. I started and finished in one day. I don't like reading that much, but I don't mind reading when it is something cool like snakes!

Ever want to be in the movies?
Kids stay away from the old Star Theatre...seems someone died there years ago. Now a boy has a strange desire to go to the deserted theatre alone. Not only is he the only customer in the audience, he is really IN the movies on screen! He has several close calls, appearing in a dangerous surfing movie and a baseball movie. Then, he appears in something really scary..! This is the best Eek book so far; a big hit with 8-9 year old boys, especially. It's easy to read, fast-paced, and has creepy illustrations showing a regular kid in extraordinary situations. Your child will enjoy being scared over and over again.

Too Scary For Babies
Creep Show is perfect for the child who feels the other Eek! series aren't scary enough. It's the story of a boy who fears a spooky old movie theater, yet is fascinated by the titles and signs that seem to appear just for him. Exciting enough to hold an older child's interest.

Really great one
This book was super, and I didn't find the ending too scary at all. In fact, not to give anything away, the ending is the BEST part about the book--and the quirky illustrations. A good one and not just for the brave at heart.

fun reading prep book with flashcards
Our narrator, a boy of 4 or 5, tells us about his encounter in a spooky house. The first two-page spread is typical of the whole book: a full-page picture on the right shows the boy walking down a country road at night; the left-hand page inserts pictures for many of the simple [nouns] being used, and reads -- "The [sun] went down. The [stars] came out. The [clock] struck ten. And I went walking under a dark, dark [moon]."

The story shows the boy entering a room in a scary house and finding a monster there. The story is 11 pages of a few lines each, and is followed by four pages of flash cards (six on each page) which are mainly nouns contained in the story, with a picture on one side and the word opposite.

Our toddler loves the feeling of participating in the reading, enjoys the funny story, and likes to point at or say the flash words. This is fun reading prep material that your preschooler might enjoy too, though not if they have monster issues!

Others in the series, sans monsters, are Otto the Cat, Silly Willy and Don't Wake the Baby.

In a Dark, Dark house
In a Dark ,Dark House
The story is about a house where no one has gone before.

There is a scary noise In the Dark ,Dark house.

In the Dark, Dark House interests me because it's like a mystery.

My sons favorite
I purchased this book for my son, he was 3 at the time, I never thought i would be reading it over and over this many times.I have read this to him so many times, that I am going to buy another copy, the one i have is so worn from hours of enjoyment, it is falling apart. My son is almost 5 now, and is starting to reconize the words now. He knows the book so well, that he sometimes tries to read it to me!He loves the ending where the monster is in the trunk, and i have to sometimes read just the ending over and over.Thank you for such a great childrens book, it is helping him with his pre-school reading!

Not what I expected
The book might be ok for a very young reader. However, from the summary and from the other review, I thought the book would be helpful to a young person with a telescope (to help them find what's out there). I just received the book today and am returning it because it will certainly not be useful in this way.

What a treasure
I've been trying to interest my daughter in sciences, and Stars is a big hit in my house. My daughter can't put it down. What a clever idea to bring down to earth (so to speak) a really complicated subject.

FANTASTIC BOOK!!!!!!
This is a fantastic introduction to astronomy for kids! Dussling does a great job in making a very complicated subject easy to understand. And I learned a lot as well. The illustrations are also very well done. A super introduction to non-fiction and science. A true must buy!

Violent bugs! Discordant Text.
Predator insects star in the Eyewitness Reader Book, Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! by Jennifer Dussling. Following in the style of other Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness books, Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! overflows with clear, eye-catching, color photographs. The cover photograph may attract reluctant readers with its graphic photograph detailing a preying mantis chomping its teeth into a captured fly. Readers enter a world of extremely magnified, floating insect photographs on white backgrounds. The images depict insects attacking each other or standing alone.
Accompanying text discusses the insect pictured in the stilted, easy language of a level two reader. Plainly labeled as a level two book, Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! fits into the popular genre of Reading Level Books. Although the author has extensive writing experience with leveled readers, the subject of the text jumps from page to page without good transitions and creates a hard-to-follow jumble of words-which potentially creates a difficult reading environment for the intended reading audience of children just beginning to read alone. Informational boxes scattered throughout the pages add additional tidbits on insect behavior-also adding additional confusion. Due to the discordant text, the book would be better used as a picture book where children read a caption here and there.
As a leveled reader, the book includes a note for parents which explains the leveled reader system and recommends the book for children just beginning to read (between ages 3-8). As an eyewitness reader, Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! follows the leveled reader guidelines for level two: approximately 700 words; 70% pictures and 30% text. Sure to be popular due to the graphic cover and leveled reader status, the book would be a satisfactory addition to larger collections but should be skipped for smaller collections since better leveled readers already exist.

Just Plain Buggy!
My sons enjoyed this book tremendously. I heard the word "cool" come out of thier mouths more than once. The pictures were very detailed. It was easy for my first grader to read.

Construction Trucks

Nice illustrations, good text
This book is well-written with explanations of many of the "major big machines" typically seen in and around construction sites. The illustrations are excellent, with attention to detail.

My one complaint is the book's construction. The pages are thinner than most paper pages and tend to tear easily. Also, the covers seem prone to ripping and tearing as well.

my son loves trucks
my 2 year old enjoys trucks and likes to sit with his daddy to look at truck books. This book is simple and straightfoward depicting a variety of colorful construction sites and the trucks used for different building methods.

Pink Snow and Other Weird Weather

Misleading title, & definitely NOT for homework assignments
If you are looking for a book to explain the phenomenon of "pink snow," this is not your book. Pink snow is explained on only one page, as falling snow formed around red soil. As a librarian who has faced homework assignments on the topic of "pink snow," I have learned that it is actually found in mountain ranges, under certain conditions, and is caused by microscopic algae. This certainly could have been explained on the easy reader level but it was not. I would hesitate even recommending this for leisure reading, since it will end up causing students confusion in the long run.

Perfect for the science classroom or child's bookshelf!
This is a wonderful book- for boys or girls! It would make a wonderful introduction to a science lesson on weather, and it's a great story for parents to read to their kids. Parents and children alike will enjoy the stories of toads raining from the sky, snowstorms in summer, and snowflakes 15 inches across! This is a great, non-fiction kids' book. I enjoyed it, and I'm 20!

Awesome Book!!
I really loved Pink Snow. Two of my 6th grade friends read it in class. They told me I would be amazed! I was! It has all kinds of cool stuff about weird weather patterns. For example, imagine looking up into the sky and seeing raining turtles! It really happened!! Buy this book. Kids will love it!
