To cite Meriwether Lewis as Editor of this and other volumes of this University of Nebraska Press edition, edited by Moulton, is an injustice to Moulton. Lewis' efforts never got beyond a pros- pectus. Further, to list Clark as merely a con- tributor, is unforgiveable.

It is a necessary and appreciated work Dunlay has given the avid frontier-history completist. A thourough study on the feelings behind and reasons that so many native americans chose to go into the ranks of the american army, either as scouts or as auxiliaries, has not been released between printed covers for us ordinary amateur-historians.

In Dunlay's precise language he makes sense of why even own tribesmen would turn on their relatives and hunt them down for the military. The army's own attitude towards using Indians to get hold of other Indians are also discussed and shows both the expected arrogance but also understanding in some of the officer corps working close with another culture and lifestyle. It is also refreshing that the author tries to draw conclusions from his own discoveries and discussions and by that show how complex and fragmented this issue is when it comes to something as fathomless as the unknowing or deliberate ultimate destruction of one's own set of life-way. 4 stars on the barometer.
