outstanding!
no immunity, susan dunlap's fourth novel featuring medical examiner-turned-private eye kiernan o'shaughnessy, is her best yet... kiernan has to deal with a potentially devastating, highly contagious virus that could ptove to become a huge epidemic. she has to face some past personal demons and make a tough decision to help an old friend, dr. jeff tremain, regardless of the threat to her personal safety... but it seems the only thing kiernan can say no to is partnership, so she agrees to help her old friend. adding to her woes is her long-time houseman, ex-pro football player brad tchernak, who's feeling undervalued and underapprecciated. brad is determined to prove himself to kiernan and he takes on a case of his own, seemingly unrelated to kiernan's highly-contagious virus. as the two cases begin to overlap, kiernan must do some quick thinking to save them both. a highly satisfying mystery, intelligent and fast-paced without ever rushing out of control. susan dunlap has become one of my favorite authors; i find myself reaching for her books itime and again. i'd love to see jill smith take a break from her woes and team up with and vj haskell to solve some really tough case!

Another winner by Susan Dunlap
Dr. Jeff Tremaine demands that private investigator Kiernan O'Shaughnessy apply her skills as a pathologist by conducting an autopsy on a cadaver, who might have died form a highly contagious disease. Jeff and Kiernan share the memory of a nasty experience in Africa where people were dying from a Lhasa fever epidemic. Jeff made a decision that ultimately cost him the woman he loved and he still blames Kiernanan for the choice he made. NO IMMUNITY is a believable tale that emphasizes the end result of fear, greed, and desperation that seems to prevail in today's society. Based on headline news stories about epidemics, Susan Dunlap weaves a frightening story where unchecked profit allows for the concealment of the truth and the resultant consequences are buried alongside it. Kiernan's motives to go it alone are fully understood, adding a personal touch to the chiller. This compelling thriller is a fascinating profile of human behavior that is a must read for those who enjoy an intellectual doomsday novel.

Fantastic Collection
This fantastic Audiobook contains 3 excellent stories: Hit and Run by Susan Dunlap; Dealer's Choice by Sara Paretsky; and A Wee Doch and Doris by Sharyn McCrumb. All three are fabulous mysteries. The first two are whodunits the third is an incredibly unique mystery that combines New Year's Eve, burglary and Scottish tradition. Of all the Audiobooks I've purchased this is the only one I take with me when running from a burning building! It is the perfect late-night snack mystery (also great to listen to when wrapping Christmas presents)! Every mystery lover will adore this affordable 3 story collection!

One of the best of the new crop of mystery writers.
A female Quincy who applies her knowlege of forensic medicine to crime solving. What Spencer is to Boston and the East Coast, Kiernan O'Shaughnessy is to San Francisco and the West Coast.

Sure technique, snappy dialogue, white-knuckle plot and bare-knuckle action scenes.

This is one author who keeps getting better and better
Jill Smith enjoys being a homicide detective in Berkley. However when Detective Jeffrey Buckner, who has return rights, comes back from another assignment, she is demoted back to the streets as a patrol officer. Jill resents Jeffrey's return just as he resents returning. While patrolling her beat, Jill sees a nude protester which is a violation of a local ordinance. Jill gives chase, but stops when former Olympian Bryn Wiley asks for her help. Bryn, a local heroine, claims that someone fired a shot at her car. ........ Jill begins to investigate Bryn's claims. The vehicle does have bullet hole in the window. Bryn believes that her aging hippie neighbor Sam Johnson is the culprit. As Jill looks deeper into the case, trying to figure out who is actually the culprit in this not so neighborly spat, Bryn disappears. Jill, realizing that this case could return her to homicide, digs deeper. However, the case is about long term hatreds that are never forgotten and sometimes leads to murder. Jill must set aside her personal agenda and solve the case before someone is actually killed. ........ SUDDEN EXPOSURE brilliantly and tenderly exposes the Berkley counterculture in a humorous who-done-it. Jill is a great police officer/detective, who in her ninth entry, remains one of the best female characters in a continuing mystery series. This reviewer enjoys all of Susan Dunlap's novels (including her other two series: O'Shaunessy and Haskell) and strongly recommends them to anyone who enjoys a quirky female detective surrounded by eccentric heroes and antiheroes (especially the latter). Exposure to Ms. Dunlap's works is good for one's health. ........Harriet Klausner

Good addition to the genre
If this book is indicative of the whole Jill Smith series, then it is a good addition to the genre. The protagonist is an uncompromising police officer in a world where compromise is survival. While the plotting in this book is not compelling, and Jill's dedication to getting to the bottom of the problem is not readily understandable, I would nevertheless recommend this. It has certainly made me want to hunt out and read the rest of the Jill Smith series, and other books written by the same author.

Enjoyable for Berkeley ambience and characters
Narrative drive is strained when policewoman heroine persists in the case - her altruistic devotion to the repulsive Ott is confusing, as is the response of her department to her. But creative handling of secondary characters and the setting make this a diverting read.

Susan Dunlap keeps getting better and better.
Berkley Police Detective Jill Smith prefers to work with the outcasts of society. That is why she is just about the only cop who gets along with Herman Ott, a private eye for the counterculture. This time Jill must help Herman when a corpse of a prominent person is found in the man's office and he has seemingly disappeared. ......The police believes that Ott is guilty, especially when he fails to show up in a reasonable amount of time. Jill is not so sure that her friend is the culprit. She begins to investigate the case only to learn that the case is much more complex than a simple killing. It seems that fraud is the underpinning behind the murder and no one is what they appear to be at first, including the justice loving Ott. With her superiors irate with her not by the book investigation and her romance causing additional problems, Jill still digs deeper into the case, only she seems to be digging herself into a deeper hole. If Jill does not solve the case soon, she probably will be yanked off the investigation. ......COP OUT is the fabulous Jill Smith at the top of her game in the tenth entry in this charming and very eccentrically brilliant series. Berkley has never seemed livelier with its rebels. riffraff, bums, and yes middle class police officers. Readers will not tire of reading about Susan Dunlap's heroine, a woman strong enough in her self-worth to get the job done despite the cost. .......Harriet Klausner

An Enjoyable Collection
This is a fun collection of short stories written by Susan Dunlap and Sharyn McCrumb. It contains 4 stories, and lasts approximately 1 1/2 hours. Three stories are written by Dunlap and one by McCrumb, so if you're like me and are interested in it because of Sharyn McCrumb be forewarned.

The first story, No Safety, is an interesting story about a gun and the inherent danger. I can't say that the ending was a shock, since it is quite well foreshadowed, but it is still moving. The second story, the Celestial Buffet, is different because it is more of a morality tale than mystery. It concerns a recently deceased woman and her journey into the afterlife. Is she going to heaven or hell, or maybe somewhere else altogether?

The next story, The Luncheon, is the only one by Sharyn McCrumb. Three women meet for their weekly luncheon. One of the women is very distracted by something. Not McCrumb's best effort but solid and enjoyable. The final story, Ott on a Limb, is kind of a throw-back to the 30s and 40s style of detective story - think Philip Marlowe. It concerns a shady character and a cop waiting for something on Christmas Eve.

This is a nice tape to stick in the car when going on a short trip. Sharon Gless does a good job reading the stories. There isn't a lot of depth or characterizations in her delivery, but she really does a splendid job on the Celestial Buffet. I recommend this for the mystery fan looking for something light and fun for a quick weekend trip.
