Haunting in its style and substance
This is probably my favorite book of modern fiction. I love it! I read it and laugh and think and fall away to another time and another culture. The lead character of Mojamaje and his friends and family have stayed with me for years - a happy haunting because I fell in love with them. I take heart from the way these characters deal with a confusing, cruel world, and - as unlikely as it sounds, I let their philosphy and humor help me keep my sense of humor in the melange of confusion that is modern America. Set on the ever changing edge of the Kalahari desert, a small community withstands corrupt politicians, repeated invasions by both black and white oppressors, factionalism within the community, and the onslaught of the 20th century with a wry, sophisticated humor. Read it as a treat for yourself. Give it to someone you love -- if you are lucky enough to find it! What happened to Duggan? I haven't heard from him since the 80's?

A well-written look into another world
William Duggan's sequel to "The Great Thirst" is one of my favorite books of all time. The honesty, humor, and trials of his characters are refreshing when compared to the cyncism that plagues our own culture. Ada and her sisters are great symbols of the inevitable clash of cultures that is Africa and the world. Inevitable because we cannot go back - and melancholy for the same reason. But the humor and the humanity of this book is why I cherish my copy and read it again and again. When can I expect the next Duggan book -- I've been patiently waiting for years.

Glib and deceptive
The title is deceptive. The book does not focus on the strategy of Napoleon beyond the second chapter.

The often repetitive book (I found several instances of wholesale cut & pastes of text) reduces great thinkers of strategy to two sentence summaries.

It never clearly argues its point, and in the second to last chapter outrageously refers to the stories of Christian saints as "fables".

I'm sorry, but a member of a strategy group in New York City, in this century, looking back on the whole of human experience in war and religion reducing great thinkers and profound events to short glib interpretation is OUTRAGEOUS.
