NOTE it was written in 1968 - and Dubos was right on about all our problems...

A wonderful, astonishing book. If you are interested in how we, as a species forever in a state of subtle evolution, are unwittingly influenced by our environment, this is a book to read.

Written in 1972, by the eminent microbiologist, this work presents valuable perspectives on todays ecological crisis. Not one to despair of events, Dubos seeks positive values in man's relation to nature. He emphasizes the particular and the regional differences, the "Spirit of place" that symbolizes the forces hidden beneath the surface and the persistence of a psyche of place. He does not conclude that mans relationship must be negative, and takes heart in human altered landscapes such as Britain's moors and in evidence of sustainable agriculture in Japan and Amish societies of America.

Dubos does not blame the Judeo-Christian tradition, but rather sees hope in Benedictine stewardship (as opposed to a "unrealistic" Franciscan view) that make it possible to maintain nature in a humanized condition.

He is not Pollyannic and recognizes the "Demon within" .. the thrust of technology and institutions that may run counter to living in harmony with nature. I recommend this book not because it offers simple answers, but because if offers a well-read source of different perspectives.

Rene Dubos, a doc, was one of the first and most influential environmentalists and also bent medicine. This book established that disease is PART of health---not in some goopy self-awareness way but as an inherent part of a system remaining able to correct itself and restore dynamic homeostasis.

Four stars only because it might be a little dated by now, but no one has attempted to surpass what Dubos accomplished.

This is a book that praises Pasteur, but has no order to the presentation of either his life or his work. One word can sum it up: disorganized. There are many better bios available of Pasteur.

This a rounded portrait of a scientific career and of nineteenth century science. Dubos traces the threads of Pasteur's research, shows his inspiration & practical skill, & shows the limitations imposed by time & place. The whole is readable & well oranized.
