A TRUE AMERICAN HERO
Everybody has a hero mine is Billy Graham. Finally, a book that does justice to a great man and his message of salvation through the LORD Jesus Christ. Iam a Christian and after I read this book,I learn more about the man that I ever imagine before. I attended his Philadelphia crusade in 1992, but if you want to know the whole story buy this book and listen to his message. You will never regret it.

A Inspirational Book about Billy Graham and his ministry!
I was very impressed with this book. This book can be for anyone. If you just want to learn about Billy Graham and his ministry and how it functions and how it has served God then this book is for you. If your in the ministry and want to feel inspired you can learn about how Billy Grahams ministry has chnaged the world that may give you inspiration in your ministry. I recomend this book to anyone really. It's easy to read and understand and covers the material very well. The special CD on Billy Graham is also very nice and inspirational. Every time I read about Billy Graham, I am in awe about him and how faithfull he was and is to God's calling to be a evangelist. This will make a addition to any library.

Fascinating interviews with contemporaries of Diaghilev
How could any book about Diaghilev be boring? This was the man who brought Chaliapin in Boris Godunov to Paris then Pavlova, the man who originated more than 70 ballet productions with great performers like Nijinsky, great artists like Picasso, great composers like Stravinsky. John Drummond, who famously ran the Proms and the Edinburgh festival for many years, took on the project of filming a two part documentary about the great impresario in the 1960's but decided the interviews with his surviving co-workers were too good to waste and prints them in full. Every single one is a treasure trove for ballet fans. He bookends these interviews with, at the beginning, the full story of how he tracked down the living survivors of the Ballets Russe, and at the end a provocative and thought-provoking essay about the development of world ballet since Diaghilev's death , right up to Adventures in Motion pictures Swan Lake 1994. I read this book right through in two days, and I'm buying another copy to lend to friends. Absolutely superb, and some nice archive photos too.

Timeless practical advice for here and now
By the time I had read this book, I'd already read countless books and essays on religion and truth and love. This book offered me something extra - and opened my eyes to a wonderful new truth - mainly this - that love is enough.

Never having been trained in the social graces, I always felt like a bit of a clutz in social settings such as dinner parties and even simple get-togethers.

Drummond makes the point that if you have love - if you can feel and express love - you have it all. So instead of focusing on which fork to use for the shrimp and salad, I started focusing on how much God loved me and everyone around me.

And that little simple truth enabled me to feel more at ease in every circumstance and in every situation.

Drummond's book is about grace, love, truth, Universal spiritual laws - it's got it all. From little things (like social graces) to big things (like loving our fellow man - irrespective of his lot in life) this book will change your life.

This should be required reading for everyone.

Eye opening
I have always been told that faith is the greatest thing a Christian can have. I have read 1 Corinthians 13 many times before, put I just thought of it as poetic. I never realized it tells us plainly LOVE is greater than faith and hope. Without love our faith and our hope is worthless junk. This book is an easy read, and short, but full of insight and intelligence. It gives the reader a new perspective on the greatest thing a Christian can have; LOVE

The greatest of these....
I read this book at least once a year to keep me focused on what's important in my life. Love is the greatest, most important force in our universe. This book explains the essense of love and provides profound insights on it purpose and how we may employ it in our daily lives. Read it, learn it, and do it. Your life will be fulfilled!

Period Review of Caruso's Recordings a Delight
Drummond and Freestone execute a well-written and comprehensive review of Caruso's recorded legacy, as it was known in 1961. The best portions of the little book are the one paragraph assessments of each record, fun to read for those familiar with the Caruso output of a bit under 300 78 RPM single sided records.

Two themes about which latter day connoisseurs will quibble are the authors' tedious drumbeat of disaffection for anything the tenor recorded after 1910, since they believed his voice deteriorated then, and their patent dislike of the fact that Caruso recorded songs as well as arias. Today, we cherish those Neopolitan and popular ditties and wish he had recorded more.

A great yarn from a legendary reporter.
Drummond, a reporter with CBS-owned Channel 2 in Chicago for many years, is best known for covering the "Outfit" in Chicago. As any Chicagoan can attest, he also covered many characters and other crooks, besides the big fish that hogged the headlines. Although there is a chapter on Tony "Big Tuna" Accardo, Drummond wisely focuses on the little guys that many of us forgot. This is a smart choice, for much is already written about the big guys like Accardo and if Drummond wanted to cover them right, he would of had to have written a separate book on several people. The only thing missing in the book is more on Drummond himself, for if you are a personal friend of his, as I am, you know that he is more interesting than any of the crooks and capers he ever covered. Read this book and try to learn as much as you can about John Drummond - a living Chicago legend and a journalism institution!

Disappointing
As a culinary student in a reputable institute, I was presented this book to use as a textbook for my business management course. The structure was sufficient, focusing almost exclusively on the hospitality industry, but the content was not. The majority of the book deals with self-evident truths and situations that can best be solved by common sense, but instead Miller voices his opinion that when experience fails you, revert back to the management theories, most of which he denigrates, others that he blatantly misinterprets.

Miller also pens that "management at any level in an art", a statement that many would disagree with and should give some insights as to what the 10th grade, babble-filled prose is all about. For a management book, especially one for $..., I was expecting a more technical approach to managing - theories and illustrations also combined with charts and math, two aspects that are completely vacant in the textbook.

There is a general sense of the grim reality of the hospitality industry that I was relieved to see (two stars). There's mention of the low pay, hard work, and long hours that will inevitably come with the job, and the book maintains that thought throughout. Overall however, it's too much money, and too much time, for reading what I already know.

Hospitality Supervision Textbook Package
This textbook package contained "Supervision in the Hospitality Industry" 3rd Edition hard cover (ISBN# 0-471-19420-0) and National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation-NRAEF ProMGMT Student Workbook (ISBN# 0471-41305-4). Chapter 9 on performance evaluation was the greatest insight. A great learning tool to help focus my job development within the huge vacation/hospitality employer I work for here in Orlando, Florida.

Enlightening!!
You can be the most organized person in the world and you will still run into difficulties when trying to communicate in an effective manner, recruit, train, evaluate performance, discipline, and delegate all at the same time. For anyone, it's a lot to have on your plate. This book makes it seem simple. It offers way to alleviate some of the frustration that comes with the job.

How to Fight the system in 10 (not-so-easy) steps
Must read for any game developer. Exposes the secret history of one of the best things Microsoft has done in the last ten years (DirectX) - a technology that has truly made life better for everyone, itself, game developers and especially customers. DirectX is the very definition of "Not Re-Inventing the wheel"

Yes the book is a little disjointed in places, but if you are familiar with the industry you'll find a lot that rings true in here. If you've read "Microsoft Secrets" which details the order then read this book which details the chaos.

My only real criticism is that the book is told solely from the perspective of the renegades and doesn't go into as much depth as I'd like on the part of the poor managers who had to "herd these cats".

If for no other reason, buy this book for the some of the funny anecdotes. I found myself laughing out loud many times while reading this.

Bottom Line: Not a classic but still a darn good read.

Making of DirectX
DirectX is the software component in Windows 95 (and later versions of Windows) that helps developers build graphics applications. This book beatifully describes the happenings in Microsoft which culminate in DirectX being a component of the operating system. The heroes are three Microsofties, nicknamed the Beastie Boys for their aggressive tactics in getting things done. The book is also a story of these three engineers and in particular about Alex St John. Evangelism to push software to customers, elaborate marketing stunts to introduce software, interactions with Apple and other companies during those times, the anti-trust case, are some of the really interesting parts of the book.

Throughout the book, one gets to appreciate the creative spirit and thirst for better software that drives the engineers. Not only does the book shed light on the psyche of the software engineers involved, it creates an image of what its like within the walls of the software behemoth. Anyone interested in programming will certainly find this book extremely enjoyable and will readily relate to the cause pursued by the programmers in question. If you are not a programmer, you might find it a wee bit uninteresting at places.

I would specially recommend this book to anyone who has done programming with OpenGL or any other graphics library. This book will be a work of history for people into graphics and gaming.

An unexpected good story of inside Microsoft
Michael Drummond takes us on an unbiased look inside Microsoft, not from the perspective of its battles with competitors, but its own internal political structure. Unlike the many books on the "browser" wars, or the anti-trust battles, this one shows the development of two products - DirectX and Chrome. DirectX changed how games were made, giving Windows a leg up as a game platform. Chrome was the cutting edge technology that Microsoft hoped would jazz up the Internet and compell people to view it exclusively on Wintel machines. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who is interested in computers and technology. It was a refreshing change of pace from the other books trying to analyse the Microsoft mystique.
